WEEKEND WARRIORS - June 6-8, 2014

Here’s the scoop for the weekend. For more ideas on what to do this weekend, check the Events Calendar on Metro Parent's PDX Kids Calendar and the urbanMamas calendar page.

Open Studio at Portland Child Art Studio. Open studio gives kids and their families the opportunity to use the studio as an art educational resource. All the materials available for your child to explore, discover, and transform. Most often, kids take the lead and engage in a very natural way with the space and the art materials available to them. Grown-up required. Friday 10am-1pm. $10/child.

Rose Festival Fleet Week at Waterfront Park. Ships from the US Navy return to the Waterfront Park seawall for shore leave and ship tours. Free public tours will be on a first-come basis, usually from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. Ships set their own schedules, so some may not offer tours during these times. Wednesday-Sunday. Free!

Rose Festival CityFair at Waterfront Park. Final weekend to enjoy entertainment, food and rides on the waterfront. Thursday & Friday gates open at 3pm, Saturday & Sunday at 11am. $7 admission, rides extra.

Pedalpalooza - various locations. Three weeks of bike fun all over town. Click the link for specific times and events. Some are 21+.

The Box Project at the Portland Art Museum. A series of workshops that celebrate domestic creativity. Parents of young children are invited to come and show off their skills altering cardboard boxes with and for their children. Together, participants build a parallel museum within the museum out of their creations. All materials are reused cardboard donated by local businesses. Friday 10am-noon and 3-5pm. Free!

Free First Friday at the Children's Museum. Enjoy free admission the first Friday of every month, with special crafts, activities,and musical guests. Friday 4-8pm.

Washington and Oregon State Parks Day and National Trails Day. Washington and Oregon State Parks are free (day use and some in Oregon for camping) and some have activities and free fishing. The American Hiking Society also celebrates National Trails Day today and some parks have special hikes and events.

Rose Festival Dragon Boat Races on Willamette River. This competition on the Willamette River in authentic dragon boats provided by the Portland-Kaohsiung Sister City Association is breathtaking. Saturday & Sunday 8am-4pm. Free!

Kid's Cook at Portland Farmer's Market: Vietnamese Spring Rolls. Kids learn about the seasonality of food, meet local farmers, and gain first-hand experience preparing ingredients purchased fresh at the market. Classes are held at the PSU Market on Saturdays in June, July and August.  The classes run from 8:30-10:00 am and cost $5 per child per class, reservations please.

Family Field Trip Day at Columbia Springs. Designed for families to explore the wonders of nature. For this special event, children of all ages are invited to experience the natural world and hands-on learning stations at Columbia Springs 100+ acre urban natural area. Reservations required. Saturday 10am-2pm.

Oaks Park's 109th Birthday. $8.00 Deluxe Ride Bracelets for all guests (no coupon necessary) and FREE cake for all park guests (while supplies last). Go carts, games, miniature golf, and concessions sold separately. Bracelets valid day of purchase only. Station appearance, entertainment. Saturday noon-7pm.

Curious Garden at the Curious Comedy Theater. The Curious Garden is a show for all ages - especially kids 0-8. Every month on the second Sunday at 10:30am. And remember each episode ends with an open mic where you can sing, dance, tell a joke and show off your talent at the Curious Garden. Sunday 10:30-11:30am. $5 suggested donation.
