Weekend Warriors: 11/2-11/4

Red Yarn is bringing his puppetry, music, and interactive storytelling to The Warehouse Cafe every Friday at 10.  $5 suggested donation. 

Head over to the lovely Green Bean Books on Friday for its monthly Spanish Storytime sponsored by Portland Early Learning Project.  Friday from 11:15 to 11:45.  Free! 

Celebrate Dia de los Muertos with a special storytime at the Hillsboro Schute Park Library on Friday from 3:30 to 5.  This will be a bilingual presentation and will be followed by a craft.  Please preregister by calling 503 615 6500.  Free! 

Free admission to the Portland Children's Museum this Friday from 4 to 8! 

The Columbia Gorge Model Railroad Club opens its doors to the public every weekend this month for its 2012 Model Railroad Show.  The displays are truly fantastic, and will impress train enthusiasts (and even non-enthusiasts) of all ages.  Hours are Saturday and Sunday from 10 to 5.  $6 adults, $2 ages 3-11.   

Painted Sky's Northstar Dance Company comes to the North Portland Library on Saturday at 11 to perform a colorful, high energy Native American Dance show.  Free! 

Lori Henriques will be performing at the Tula Gluten Free Bakery on Saturday at 2.  Free!  

Here some of the many outstanding works by George Gershwin as performed by pianist Barbara Amell and Portland Opera soprano Jennie Spada.  At the Central Library Saturday from 3:30 to 4:30.  Free!  

$2 discounted admission to OMSI this Sunday from 9:30 to 5:30.  While you're there, check out their celebration of sustainability and discover ways that you can make your celebrations more sustainable with homemade gifts, ornaments, wrapping paper, and treats from 10 to 4.  

Sunday from 12 to 5 is free family day at the Portland Art Museum.  Discover myths, monsters, athletes, and games through art-making, storytelling, artist demos, and musical performances at this celebration of Ancient Greece. Free! 

You have two chances to see Elizabeth Mitchell perform at the Village Ballroom on Sunday - one at 2 and on at 4.  Get tickets here.  $10 adults, $5 kids.

The model train show is the highlight of our year... if you see a happy 7yo running pellmell with his 9yo friend in tow, that is us :)

There are lots of fun activities scheduled for this weekend. I hope that many parents can participate with their kids. Even in times when we are busy with housework, grocery shopping and other chores, it's important to take the time off to do something relaxing with those we love.

After the passing of this hurricane, so many people have lost their homes, their vehicles and much more. There are people who will never see their loved ones again. I hope they will keep focused on the future and not let themselves drown in the feelings of discouragement that they will naturally feel at this time. Doing something relaxing may seem frivolous but it will help people remember that there is still a lot to give thanks for.
