Weekend Warriors: August 25-29
It is hot out there today (Wednesday)! Thank goodness it's going to cool down again later in the week. We're approaching the end of the summer, so every day should feel like the weekend! There are lots more events than we're able to fit here, so please be sure to peep the urbanMamas calendar.
Have you been to a Dive In Movie? They have them every year at Portland Pools. This summer's featured film is "UP" and will be shown on a large screen viewable from the pool. Water is heated extra warm, bring an air mattress or inner tube! Movies start at 8pm. Adults $5/Youth $3. This week's movies will be at Montavilla (Wed), Creston (Thurs), Sellwood (Fri), Wilson (Sat), and Grant (Sun).
How about a movie in the park? Check out "Alice in Wonderland" (2010) at Hazeltine Park on Thursday evening or "Avatar" at Laurelhurst Park on Friday or "Tale of Despereaux" at Montavilla Park on Saturday. Pre-movie festivities include music and start at 6:30.
Mudeye Puppets present “BikeTrike Spoketacular” World Premiere on Friday at 10am at Lot 13 on N. Mississippi and N. Shaver. The tale involves Air-Rick, the inflatable car salesman, and dreams of a Spoke-tacular bicycle that can take him far from his dreary drudgery. Included are important lessons about creative reuse and bicycling.
This Friday is Free Friday Evening at the Portland Art Museum from 5 to 8pm. A great opportunity to check out the permanent and visiting exhibits. I admit, I don't frequent PAM, and a free evening is a great way to bring this family in!
“LotsandLots” a puppet festival will be happening in conjunction with the St Johns Farmer's Market on N. Philadelphia and Lombard from 10:00am to 3:00pm. Throughout the day there will be a puppet making station, giant marching puppets, puppet dance off, local drum line, live Balkan music and lotsandlots more! Live music by The Mora. Mudeye performs at 11am.
Mocha Momma's hosts an End of Summer Barbecue (6116 SE Milwaukie Ave., Portland, OR 97202) on Sunday. Here's the plan. At 11, The Alphabeticians perform, outside, in the sun. At noon, the Barbecue stops. The Alphabeticians stop playing to eat, then, at 12:30, start playing music again, until 1:30. Then, at 2, The Snail People play more music for families. This is our last show before school starts. Did we mention it's free?
Farmers Markets happen on Sundays too! Check out Parkrose Farmers Market Sunday Edition (NE 131PL and NE Sandy Blvd) and Lents International Farmers Market (SE 92nd and Foster). Both of these run into October!

Friday! 8/27 from 10-3
We are hosting a yard sale run by our kids. They chose the items, crafts, and baked goods to sell. They are running their own booths. They are making the posters. AND, they are choosing to donate all or some money to oil spill relief efforts.
Please come by Portsmouth Trinity Lutheran Church at
7119 N Portsmouth Boulevard.

Here's something that sounds fun in North Portland, from my mama yahoo group:
I wanted to let you know about a fun event at UP tomorrow afternoon (Friday 8/27) – the second annual Bite on the Bluff. It’s like a mini-version of Bite of Oregon, with some North Portland restaurants on the Plaza outside the Chiles Center (the big white dome on the corner of Willamette & Portsmouth). It runs from 12 noon – 7 p.m., as part of freshman orientation and women’s soccer opening night. It should be a fun diversion for a Friday afternoon – if you are looking for something to do, please take a walk through campus and have a bite to eat!
