Friday April 23

  • Free Friday Night, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Portland Art Museum. Free admission on the fourth Friday of every month.
  • Celebrate Earth Day, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Matt Dishman Community Center, 77 NE Knott St. No registration required. $3/family.  503-823-3673.

Saturday, April 24

  • Oregon Ag Fest, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oregon State Fairgrounds. The idea here is to give kids a hands on connection to where our food and fiber come from. They say: “Plant a seedling, ride a pony, watch chicks hatch, pet a rabbit, dig for potatoes and much more.” $7.50 for adults; 12 and under free.

  • March for Babies, 9 a.m., either Rose Quarter Commons in Portland or Vancouver Landing in Vancouver. The March of Dimes uses this 6.2 mile walk both to support families struggling with premature birth and also for research toward prevention. 
  •  Sunnyside Swap Shop Open House, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (also, free admission to the live music at 6 p.m.), 3420 S.E. Yamhill. One block south of Belmont across from the Sunnyside School Park.

  • Mhembero/Celebration, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Catlin Gabel School. It’s the second annual joint performance of a ton of local school marimba bands, with a special appearance by a well known high school marimba ensemble from Botswana. Free!

  • City Repair Earth Day, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Washington High School Field (SE 12th and Stark). The volunteer run celebration features lots of earthday stuff including a kid’s village and live music.

  • Children’s Book Bank Earth Day Drive, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., New Seasons Markets and the Whole Foods Market at Bridgeport and Laurelhurst. That was a fabulous story in last week’s Oregonian about a woman who decided to try to close the book gap between rich and poor kids. Now is your chance to help. Bring new or gently used children’s books so that thousands of local kids can go home with a bag of 15 of their very own books.

  • Gresham Earth Day Celebration, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Gresham City Hall. Kid friendly highlights include a science show, puppet show, African dance, drumming and song, a tree walk, Burgerville’s Nomad restaurant, $5 helmets for bikes and skateboarding, arts and crafts, birdhouse building and more.

  • Family Fun 5K Walk, 10 a.m., Hilton Hotel, 301 West 6th Street, Vancouver. The family walk is part of the big Vancouver Discovery Walk Festival. A medal for everyone; freebies, snacks and entertainment along the course. Cost is $10 for over 12, free for 12 and under.

  • Joy in Lents, 10 a.m. to afternoon, Village Free School, 8660 S.E. Foster Road. Free music workshops, a parade, and performances by Danza Azteca and the March Fourth Marching Band.

  • Poem in Your Pocket Day, 10:30 a.m. to noon, Sellwood Moreland Library. Put your favorite poem on a pocket sized card to carry with you, and decorate it. All ages. 503.988.5398

  • Día de los Niños y Día de los Libros, 11 a.m. at the North Portland Library, 2 p.m. at the Rockwood Library (and also Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Midland Library). A big annual party celebrating bilingual literacy with food, music and fun.

  • Make a Felt Storyboard (for parents), 11 a.m., Albina Library. Make a felt-covered board and simple felt shapes that you and your child can use for storytelling. Registration required. 503.988.5362
  • The Value of Vegetables, 11 a.m., Al’s Garden Center, 7505 SE Hogan Road,  Gresham. Learn about vegetables, start seeds and take them home. $5 per child. 503 491 0771 
  • Thomas the Tank Engine Party, 11 a.m., Capitol Hill Library. For train lovers in preschool through grade 5. 503.988.5385
  • Komedy for da Kids, 11:30 a.m., North Portland Library. “Angel Ocasio presents a bilingual and interactive performance combining physical comedy, juggling, balancing and magic.” Preschool through teen. 503.988.5394
  • Birthday Party for the CW Parker Carousel, noon to 2 p.m., Jantzen Beach Supercenter. Prizes, cake and entertainment, and if you bring a new, unwrapped gift for the Bridge the Gap Foster Children’s Birthday Program, get a pass for free rides from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. 
  • PDX Kids Swap, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Central Library. “Join us at the library for a free kids clothing swap …  Bring clean clothes in reasonable condition, no rips, tears, visible stains, etc. There are no minimum requirements for how many items you have to bring or how many you can take, but please be courteous and generous. Don't forget to bring a bag to carry your treasures home in. Items that do not get swapped will be donated to low income and high needs families in our pdx community.   • Costumes for Ramona, 2 p.m., Gresham Library, 385 N.W. Miller Avenue. Celebrate the birth of Portland author Beverly Cleary. The  library says: “On Klickitat Street, Ramona made her own costumes and wore them year-round. You can too! Learn to make attachable ears and tails using fabric and recycled materials. Turn yourself into an animal or creature of your choice, and finish your costume off with face paint. Great for ages 4-10 and their families.” 503.988.5387 
  • Earth Day Superheroes, 2 p.m., Gregory Heights Library. Make a costume from recycled materials. 503.988.5386
  • OMSI Star Party Astronomy Day, from sunset on, both Rooster Rock State Park and L.L. “Stub” Stewart State Park. One of seven star parties to be held this year in collaboration with the Rose City Astronomers, Vancouver Sidewalk Astronomers and Oregon Parks and Recreation. All ages, from beginner to experts, view the sky through binoculars and telescopes. Call the Star Party hotline first at (503) 797-4610 #2 (or check the website) to make sure that weather hasn’t canceled the event. Free, but it does cost $5 to park your car.

 Sunday April 25

  • Viking Pancake Breakfast (special Grieg Lodge Birthday Brunch), 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Norse Hall, 111 NE 11th Ave. All you can eat pancakes, along with eggs, sausage, fruit compote, applesauce, orange juice, coffee and tea. $6 adults, $3 ages 5-12, free for under 5.   • A Child’s Time to Rock, 10 a.m. to noon, The Wonder Ballroom. They say: “An awesome indie rock show for kids featuring two renowned Seattle bands: Recess Monkey and The Not-Its!  (Also) Hova & Belinda, the hosts of Greasy Kid Stuff on 94/7, will emcee the show. The concert and silent auction will benefit cancer research by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Advance tickets are $9/adult, $6/child under 13, free for non-walkers (See website for info on getting advance tickets) Day of event tickets are $11/adult, $6/child under 13, free for non-walkers at the Wonder Ballroom (http://wonderballroom.com/), 124 NE Russell.” 

  • You Who, starts at noon for early fun, starts at 1 p.m. for show, Kennedy School, 5736 N.E. 33rd Ave.  It’s the monthly children’s rock show/dance party/storytime/sing-along etc. $10 adults, $5 ages 12 and under, free for non-walkers. 503-317-8143.
  • A Mother’s Day Surprise, 1 p.m., Luscher Farm, Lake Oswego. Bring a favorite photo to frame, and make a frame from natural materials. For ages 6 and up. $7 residents, $9 non residents.  Register in advance.

  • Celebrate the Earth, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Tryon Creek State Park. They say:Bring the whole family to learn more about bobcats through arts and crafts, games, stories and more. Come dressed as your favorite animal for an afternoon parade.  Hear the winners of our Tall Tale Contest tell their stories about “How Bobcats Tail Was Bobbed”. Refreshments will be served. Free event, no pre-registration necessary.

 Monday, April 26

  • 500 Tents for Haiti, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., McMenamins Bagdad Theater. Meet local firefighters who were among the first to respond after the Haiti earthquake and watch a documentary film. Tickets $10. The event is a fundraiser to try to get shelter for Haitian people.
