Recommendations for Pediatric Ophthalmologist?
While we have had previous threads with suggestions on where to get glasses for the little folk (here and here), we have yet to talk about ophthalmologists you would recommend. An urbanMama recently emailed:
I have noticed my 7 year old squinting quite a lot recently and since my husband and I both wear glasses, we're thinking it's time for a real vision exam. I received the advice that we should see an ophthalmologist rather than an optometrist, but I'm always afraid to just pick someone randomly from our provider list. Anyone have a pediatric ophthalmologist they recommend?

My son saw Aazy Aaby about 18 months ago. Dr. Aaby did a good job getting my active 4 year old to cooperate. http://www.eyehealthcataract.com/portland/meet-our-surgeons/aazy-a-aaby-m-d.htm

We see Dr. Daniel Karr at the Casey Eye Institute up at OHSU. He is very kind and patient, explains things well, and keeps cool toys in his pocket. And you can get a free ride on the tram!

I second Dr. Aaby. My daughter needed 2 eye surgeries and he was great. I have a friend who also used him because her 4 year old needed glasses.

I would highly recommend Dr. Karr at the OHSU Casey Eye Institute/Elks Children's Eye Clinic as well. He is GREAT with kids. I have been to him with both children and he is quite the expert.

I don't have a specific recommendation although we did like the doc we saw at Casey Eye. I wanted to mention though that if you go there you need to be sure to confirm with them how they will bill - they will generally not bill vision plans and we had a bit of a go-round, not to mention much more expensive bill, because they billed our medical insurance.

We use Dr. Bruce Wojciechowski, Northwest EyeCare Professionals. I highly recommend he and his staff. They are totally set up for kids and families.

My daughter sees Dr. Daniel Holland with EyeHealth Northwest. He's a pedriatric ophthamologist. Really great with kids and parents.

We like Dr. Holland at EyeHealth NW too. He sees patients at couple different eastside locations.

A third rec for Dr. Aaby. He's a family favorite now, three generations of our family have gone to him, starting from when he was relatively new to his practice to now, when he is the senior doc on staff. He performed my son's eye surgery for strabismus two years ago and I couldn't have put my son in better hands. (And from the kids' perspective, the office has a pretty wonderful playroom!)

I take my daughter to Dr Wheeler at Casey Eye Institute. I see him (with a gaggle of students, seriously, there were 4 with him last time) only briefly; he seems very personable, and my dd's vision is improving. The orthoptists are the ones who do the vision tests. They are all pretty good, though there is one who is on the perpetually cranky side.

Dr. Holland is great (for adults too; he's been my eye doc for 12+ years).

I'd recommend Dr. Shawn Goodman at Child Eye Care in Lake Oswego:

She did my son's eye surgery last year, along with pre/post followup

Dr. Clay at Mt. Hood Vision without a doubt. He knows his stuff and probably saved me from a life of misery.

Try eye care clinics that specializes in the matter. They both have trained optometrists and opthalmologist.
