WEEKEND WARRIORS: June 5-7
Just a few highlights of activities that are scheduled this weekend...
Friday
Free First Fridays at Portland Children's Museum: Bring a can of dog/cat food and join Oregon Humane Society to kick off early the Dog Days of summer, and decorate your own pet rocks! 5:00-8:00 pm.
Family Concerts: Check out two performances that promise to be entertaining to both parents and kids. Andy Simon will be singing during the dinner hour (free, 5:30-6:30 pm) and Erik Herman will be singing his Elephant Song (viewed by more than 5 million on YouTube) and more from 7:00-9:00 pm ($5 per person/$10 per family). Saturday
Dragon Moon Festival: An amazing collection of puppetry, ballet and lion dancers, music, family activities, and more. Old Town Chinatown (4th & Burnside), noon-10:00 pm Saturday, noon-6:00 pm on Sunday.
Grand Floral Rose Parade: If you are up for braving the crowds (it's broadcast on KGW Channel 8 if you're not), the highlight of the Rose Festival has quite the line up of floats, bands, horses, etc. Leaves Memorial Colosseum at 10:00 am en route to downtown Portland.
Dragon Boat Racing: Over 100 teams will compete on the Willamette River in this Portland tradition. South end of Tom McCall Waterfront Park. Saturday and Sunday, 8:00 am-4:00 pm.
Tryon Creek Junior Rangers: Every Saturday and Sunday, June through August, kid 6-12 can join a park ranger and learn how to help protect our natural resources, plants and animals. Participating in nature games, nature crafts and park explorations will help junior rangers earn their badge. No pre-registration required. The Saturday topic is ladybugs and the Sunday topic is the State of Oregon. 1:00-2:00 pm.
Sunday
$2 Sunday at OMSI: Entry for all is just $2 the first Sunday of every month.
Milk Carton Boat Races: It's National Dairy Month and as such, the racing milk carton boats have returned. And, if you were wondering, it's not to late to enter. See website for rules and tips. Westmoreland Park (SE McLoughlin & Bybee), 11:00 am.
Family Pride Day at Q Center: A special pride celebration that's appropriate for the youngest community member. Crafts, music, and games for the all. Staff from the Portland Children's Museum will be coordinating craft projects, bring a white t-shirt to decorate. Q Center (4115 N. Mississippi), 2:00-4:00 pm.
