Naturopath Recommendations
We've talked about MD vs. ND and we've also collected some great suggestions for Naturopaths for Kids. An urbanMama recently emailed requesting more recommendations for naturopaths:
I’ve struggled with a diminished libido since going on the pill when I first married my husband 13 years ago. After a lot of couples counseling to help decompress what became a horrible situation in our marriage, I felt pretty confident that my decreased sex drive has been related to hormones. I saw a naturopath a few years ago for help with this issue, but stopped seeing her after getting pregnant. I’m still struggling with a range of hormone challenges (PMS being one), and would like to get back to a naturopath again. I’m wondering if any urban mamas out there have recommendations for Portland area naturopaths who specialize in female hormones? I would prefer someone in NE Portland, but am willing to go pretty much anywhere in the Portland area to get some help with this issue. Thanks!

I love Dr. Lori VonderHeyt at Beaumont Health Care on NE Fremont. Her # is 503-249-7752. She is patient and caring and wonderful.

Nora Tallman ND and Catherine Schaefer ND delivered my baby at home. They are Naturopaths and certified nurse midwifes who see pregnant women, children, and familes in NE portland (5909 N Curtis Ave). Though I don't know if they specialize in hormone therapy, they were wonderful and I would heartily recommend their care to anyone in search of attentive, knowledgeable, nurturing care.

Hi, I just stumbled on to this site and saw your question. What a great question because this is so common. I'm a new mom, and have been looking into various options. I think it's very much related to hormones. Just wanted to give you something to think about as you are finding the best ND. The adrenal glands are linked to many things: energy, libido...they are responsible for the fight or flight response. I am not scientific, so bear with me. It is quite possible that you need adrenal support. I would definitely ask an ND about this, maybe there is some bloodwork they can do to test this. There is also a great store called Abundant Living near Clackamas Town Center where I get an herb supplement for adrenal support. I have not been back to my normal dose since having my son, but I am on my way and this has been a life-saver for me. You can call Abundant Living and ask about it. They are great at answering questions based on symptoms one is experiencing and what minerals, vitamins, or herbs might be helpful. It's not hormone therapy, but it is a very healthy option that will be replenishing to your body. I have heard good things about hormone therapy too, if you can find the right person to help you as an individual! I wish you the best, just wanted to give you something to think about. I'm on the journey too!

I would like to second the recommendation of Nora Tallman And Catherine Schaefer at A Gentle Beginning. They not only specialize in pregnancy/childbirth but also in women's health and pediatrics. They delivered our newest addition at home, a month ago, and we are now using them for my female care and pediatrics. They are highly capable and knowledgeable.

I second Dr. Susan Allen. I have seen her for over 7 years and my three sons have never seen another Dr. She's amazing! She's helped me through many different health issues such as thyroid issues, miscarriage, hormone imbalance. Love her!

Don't you all just love Portland. I often take this for granted that we have so many choices in our care here and this isn't true everywhere else in the US. To see the outpouring of support for ND's makes me feel so good. I second Sara Ogushi. I've seen her office mate Mary Grabowska and can't say enough great things about her but I'm not sure she is taking on any new clients right now.

I will third Nora and Catherine at A Gentle Beginning but also highly recommend their associate Regina, who is also a ND. I love all these women and trust them.

Thanks for all of the recommendations. I'm wondering what type of insurance/health plans you all have, and do they cover the services of your naturopaths?

Kaiser! Its a fairly new coverage option, quite a few people I know that have Kaiser now have the option to get alternative medical treatments. I love it! They have a good amount of practitiners that are in the network so you have plenty to choose from!

Has anyone tried the Naturopathic School clinic?
I am tight on money and really need some attention for bad PMS after having my period return post baby. My regular physician says the only remedy is Ibuprofen and or the pill, and know that can't be true!!!
