For what age is Treasure Island?

The urbanMamas community is always such a wealth of support and perspective.  Shari emails:

I'm thinking about taking some or all of my kids to the Oregon Children's Theater/Captain Bogg & Salty showing of Treasure Island. But it has been so long since I read the book, I can't remember for what ages it would be appropriate. Is anyone familiar enough with the book or the show to make a recommendation? My children are ages 5 and 5 (boys) and 8 (girl).

I highly recommend the org Common Sense Media, it is designed to help parents understand the media available to their children and assess its appropriateness (not to suggest it's a substitute for good ol' mama feedback, though!): http://www.commonsensemedia.org/

I would not take a kid under about 8 to this, just because it is a lot less music than I anticipated.. more drama. The subject matter was WAY too advanced for my 4 year old!

I asked just this question when I was buying tickets for Lilly at the OCT offices. I was told that the play is true to the story and at least one pirate does die in the fighting. They suggest that if you think your child might be a little frightened, to get tickets in the balcony where they will feel more removed from the action. The book is scary with little humor and the pirates are quite sinister so as much as I'd like to, I don't think we will be taking our 5yr-old even though she is not easily scared and loves live theater.

My children are 4 1/2 and 7 1/2. The youngest is completely obsessed with Capt. Bogg and Salty, and he was psyched whenever the band played or Capt. Bogg came onstage, but it was a little talky for him. A whole lotta plot to stuff into an hour, plus music. Not too scary, and my kids have minimal exposure to scary stuff. We were in the balcony. Now, I say it seemed too talky (lots of squirming during the heavy dialogue parts) , but once we got home there was nonstop Playmobil re-enactment of finding the treasure and hanging out on the ship, no fighting. So it clearly made a big impression.

It did get us all pumped up for a summer's worth of Bogg and Salty shows, and the band was on hand to meet and greet afterward, as usual.

My 5 year-old son went on Sunday and loved it. He sat in the balcony with his Nana and was a little worried at first that it would be scary but ended up loving it. He's really into putting on plays, pirates and Capt. Bogg so that could have been the real "hook". ha!
