urbanMamas Toy Swap and Lead Testing Event
I can't tell you how many times one of my son's friends has been over and started playing intently with something my son has ignored for the past year. And while the frequent use of my down coat reminds me that spring is certainly not around the corner, it's never too early to start some spring cleaning, right? So what better place to start than the toy box? Yes, urban mamas, now you officially have an excuse to clear out all those toys and games gathering dust under couches and beds, all those puzzles that have been done a million times and join us for an urbanMamas toy swap.
Bring your gently used toys, games and puzzles and swap them for something "new." Nothing like a little infusion of new toys to bring peace and harmony to the household, my friends. And if you, like me, have a few toys that have been taken out of circulation pending that trip to the lead testing clinic that never happened, bring 'em along as our friends at the PDC will be on hand to test toys for lead paint. That said, please do peruse the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission web site to be sure you're not bringing anything that has already been recalled. All the leftover toys will be donated. We look forward to seeing you there! Please RSVP in the comments to let us know you will be coming!

We're in. My husband is the "too many toys in the house" person in our family, so if he doesn't attend to prevent me from lugging home too many new treasures, at least I know he'll be busy making a "to go" pile at our house. Should be an 'interesting' process with kids involved...

I am hoping to come (child free). I think we have some puzzles and other things to get rid of. I will see how much purging I can do.

I'll be there! Looking forward to it!

I plan to be there, though at only 11 months, my boy hasn't outgrown too many toys yet. And if I put them away for a while, they're new to him all over again. But I will try to pry a few things from his clingy hands and hope to bring home some new treasures for him. Thanks!!

I already have a pile started! I will be there.

BREAKING NEWS: Breast pump vinyl coolers test high for lead!
Testing conducted by the Center for Environmental Health (CEH) has found high levels of lead in vinyl coolers used for storing bottles of breast milk and a vinyl carrying case for a baby's pacifier.
CEH found a vinyl cooler for stored breast milk with high levels of lead from a "Pump in Style" breast pump made by Medela; also with high lead levels was a carrying case that came with a First Years "Natural Transitions" breast pump made by RC2 Brands, Inc., makers of Thomas and Friends products; a Playtex "Fridge to Go" vinyl baby bottle cooler; an NFL licensed Oakland Raiders baby bottle cooler; and a vinyl Skip Hop, Inc. "Pacifier Pocket" carrying case. The baby products tested with lead levels between two and nine times the federal legal limit for lead in paint (600 parts per million).
CEH is recommending that parents discard the vinyl coolers and vinyl cases used for storing breast milk, pacifiers, or other infant products.

Thanks, we'll be there. Is it okay to post this event at our elementary school, or is this only for urbanMamas members?

Mariposa,
Thank you for spreading word for the event. All are welcome at the toy swap and at any of our urbanMamas events, unless specifically mentioned. So, yes, please feel free to post the event at your school.

I will be out of town this weekend. Is there somewhere I could drop toys off prior to the event? I have a bag that I've had packed up since Xmas and I'd love for them to find a happy new home.

Erin,
Thanks for hosting this. I won't have too much to swap, since we've got another coming in a month, but I am still excited to come.
Jen :)

I wanted to say Thank you for hosting this yesterday. It was great to get some new things for my little Apple. She loves her "new" toys and esp. her little dolly.

I read with great interest in your concept of swapping toys. I would like to organize something similar to this in my local area (near Gettysburg, PA). Were there any problems encountered at the swap - such as mothers wanting the same toy? Was there any pre-registering toys so moms knew what was going to be there? I would love to hear from the person who originally organized this event. Do you have a website?
