Soccer Moms: Getting Started Early
Some mamas are happy to wait until the little ones are older to get them involved in organized activities. Melissa's interested in finding a soccer class for her toddler. Are there really any out there? She asks:
I keep hearing of all of these Moms getting their 2-year olds into soccer classes/teams. I can’t seem to find a class anywhere and am curious if you might know of some?

We've been doing soccer through Portland Lil'Kickers. They start at 18 months, and coaches Ryan and Brian are great. A bit spendy, but well worth it. Milo has loved it, and Calvin can't wait to play.

Lil'Kickers at Portland Indoor Soccer is a great program! My kids have LOVED it. Their program is non-competitive and perfect for little ones, lots of games and a really good time. Classes fill super fast so make sure you get on their mailing list -they will let you know when registration starts in advance.

I'm sure you'd know about this one if you were in district, but maybe this will help someone else: Tualatin Hills Parks and Rec (google THPRD) offers soccer classes at several locations. Out of district kids can sign up for classes too, but it gets spendy.

We just got our Portland Park and Rec's Winter guide in the mail this week (for the N/NE), and there were a few different classes for the littlest soccer players (and also, I think, basketball, tumbling, etc.). I mostly looked at the classes offered at Matt Dishman, since it's closest to us, but possibly the other rec sites offer similar classes. I was mostly paying attention to other class offerings, but I believe it's once a week, for about 6(?) weeks, for about $30. Sorry I can't be more definite about the details, but my son fell asleep on my bed (where I had left the pamphlet) and I so don't want to wake him up! :)

I agree with the recommendation for Portland Indoor Soccer's Lil' Kickers. It's a great kids progam, great coaches, my son has been in their 18-mo to 2 yrs class for a full session now and he adores it. Parents participate with the kids on the field in that class, and then from ages 3+ parents watch from the sidelines. My 4 year old son loves his class as well.

Looks like you have to be a stay at home parent for Lil' Kickers. I did not see any weekend or weeknight classes on the website. PP&R has a few weekend classes.

Thank you all for the great recommendations!

You may want to try Soccer Shots, they do fun skills classes for kids and have programs in parks in Portland and Beaverton. They are also cheaper than Lil K. See: soccer shots.org/pdx
