Seeking General Practitioner

Here's a request for your recommendations for a general practitioner.  We just know you'll be generous with your thoughts!  Betsy emails:

I think urbanMamas has gotten me every doctor / hairdresser / school that I like and use, but I don't think we have covered the basic general practitioner category yet.  I need your basic doc that listens, focuses, and has good ideas.  My current one falls short on 3 out of 3 of those.  I live in NW/SW Portland.  Anybody have anyone they are willing to share?   Thanks for this great community.  You have made living here with children easier and certainly more fun.

I love Portland Family Practice (they're located at approximately NE Sandy and 20th.) The doctors that I've had the most experience with there are the Reagans (all three), Susie Bobenrieth, and Debbie Murphy, but I've not met with anyone I haven't liked.

In SW Portland, my husband's doctor, Mark Bajorek, is at the Gabriel Park OHSU clinic, and he really likes him, too.

Hope you find a good doc soon!

I second Portland Family Practice. I see the Reagans and have had great care. Good luck!

I'm the Betsy that posted. I live right near St. Vincent's Hospital and hate to drive tooo far for a doctor - so docs on this side of the river are good. Especially NW! Thanks everybody for any help you can give.

I don't have a doc on your side of the river, but I completely understand! I insist on having the folks I need right in my neighborhood. Not gonna cross that river!

So I'm posting this for anyone in NE who follows this looking for a family practice place: I've been going to Family Medical Group on NE 33rd and Knott since I was in middle school. All the doctors are great except one (Booker), but our regular is Dr. Jon Peters. He is really good about listening and seems very comfortable with referring us to specialists when anything unusual comes up. He does a good job with my 60-year-old mother, myself, my husband, my 8-year-old, and my 3-year-old.

As far as parenting issues, he's been very supportive of breastfeeding, but since I vaccinate my kids, I don't know what his approach is with families who don't.

Good luck!

I liked everyone I saw at OHSU Gabriel Park, at Vermont and SW 45th, across from the SW Community Center. It's a family practice center, so everyone can go. Especially Dr. Jennifer Donohue (she was disappointed when I got pregnant and moved at the same time b/c she was looking forward to monitoring my pregnancy!). I highly recommend her!

Dr. Janice Miller at Westside Medical (in St. Vincents) is great - I've been going to her for years.

Another vote for Mark Bajorek at Gabriel Park family medicine. Me and my big kids like him quite well.

You absolutely MUST see Janus Maybee at Southwest Family Physicians in Tigard. (She's a nurse practitioner.) http://www.swfamilyphysicians.com/ I have been seeing her for almost 10 years and she is one of the most caring, compassionate health care providers I have ever met. I have recommended her to several friends who all thanked me later because they were so thrilled with her. You will not be disappointed!

I've seen Sarah Zweber only a couple of times, but she's consulted with me over the phone (which I love that I dont necessarily have to go into her office if I have a question or need a referral) several times over the last 2 years. Now that my baby is born I'll start seeing her on a yearly basis again. The times that I've met with her she has spent more time with me than I'd expected and has been really nice to talk to. My boss has been going to Dr. Zweber for over 15 years and LOVES her so I feel good about that.

Also in her practice is a fellow named Michael Moore. A good friend of mine saw him for several years and really loved him too. I tried to get in to see him initially, but he was not accepting new patients so I was referred to Zweber.

They are located in the St. Vincents building, and their number is 503.297.5581

Hello Mamas,

Please help an urbanMama with more recommendations for general practitioners:

"I live in NW Portland close to 23rd etc, Willamette Heights neighborhood. I’m seeking a good GP in my neighborhood or within a 15 minute drive. My OBGYN is over at St. Vincents so I don’t mind driving to that campus for a GP as well but definitely would like to find a great doctor either in my neighborhood or St.V’s area. I would prefer a female Dr. but will take suggestions on great Male Doctors as well."

Hello urbanmamas, I've been through the archives looking for recommendations for a family doctor, and I'm really hoping someone can provide some updated referrals. Portland Family Practice sounds great, but everyone whose bio I fell in love with isn't actually taking new patients!!!!
I've always had a separate OB, but now that I think I am done having kids, I want someone that can see the whole picture. I haven't had a physical in almost three years, would like to get my cholesterol, etc. tested, and I really need to be established with a practice in case I happen to get sick and need some antibiotics. That said, I also want someone who can specifically advise on women's issues like contraception options, heavy periods, and low sex drive. I definitely would prefer working with a female physician. Does anyone have a good recommendation and know that their doctor is taking new patients? I live in inner SE and work downtown, so close-in is best, but for the right doctor, I would be willing to travel.

Give Your Estate Plan a Checkup.

Hi. I am a full time working mother of two and frequent lecturer at various Portland area hospitals where I present to new moms groups about the importance of doing a Will and how to choose a guardian/conservator/trustee for minor children.

Please make a New Year’s resolution to give your estate plan a check-up, and keep it! Be sure you have all the basic estate planning documents to leave your assets to the people or charities that you wish to benefit. If you have a spouse or partner, provide for your mate financially. Name a guardian for children who are minors or have special needs and leave funds for them in good hands in case something happens to you.

If you have any questions please feel free to pop me an e-mail at Michelle-Shari@krusslaw.com

Although we all know we should have an estate plan, many of us are too busy to take the time to create one. This is especially true for parents. However, taking the time to plan is one of the most important things parents can do for their children. Planning will ensure your children will be cared for and decisions will be made for them by people you choose and trust. It will also ensure assets your children inherit can be used for their benefit and managed responsibly until they are able to handle their own finances.

Choosing a person or family to care for your children is difficult. In fact, for many families, it’s the hardest part of planning their estate. It’s not easy to think of anyone else, no matter how loving, raising your child. Yet, you can make a tremendous difference in your child, spouse or partner’s life by planning ahead. And you have nothing to lose except a few moments thinking about what you value most in life, your family and friends.

Please think about starting your estate planning today.
