Seeking support for Sensory Integration/Processing Disorder

"Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) is a complex disorder of the brain that affects developing children and adults."  There have been suggestions on preschools for children with sensory integration disorder and there was previous discussion on finding a support group for parents and children with sensory integration disorder.  But, did a group ever form and gather?  Beren is seeking support and would like to get convene families:

I’m looking for a support/social group for Portland mamas with Preschool aged kids with sensory processing disorder that impedes their ability to attend or succeed in preschool or Pre-K. I’m feeling a little alone and would love to share stories, offer support, and cry together over administrators who just don’t get it. Are there any other stay-at-home moms or dads who meet up during the weekday?—Mom of 3 in NE Portland

i am interested as well, i have an 18mo old and we are about 4 mo into this and looking for other kids in a similar situation...no preschool yet but lots of OT and other stuff....would love to just meet other families going through the same things....

There used to be a group in Vancouver - you could try their number 360-253-5905. They may know if another group exists in the area...

good luck!

Oh, how I wish I could help with the group. I can help, however with some giveaways. I've hooked up with Therapy Shoppe for three giveaways a month. Right now I have a spinning board on http://www.discussingautism.com and aromatherapy bean bags as http://adopttwoboys.blogspot.com

My son just got the spinning board today and I can't wait to see how much he loves it.

Also, try meetups.com. It is where I found my special needs group.

I would love to be part of a group for moms with preschoolers with SPD. Let me know how I can help.

My son recently turned 5 and he was diagnosed with sensory processing disorder a couple of months ago. We are doing OT and it seems ot be going well so far, but me we're not sure what the best school situation is for him right now and if we should go through MESD. I would love to find a support group for parents of children with SPD.

Our son 4 1/2 has many sensory issues and currently attends a mixed preschool.
He goes to private speech and OT. We have been using the listening program for 3mths which has helped.
Very interested in meeting or talking with parents of children with Spd.
Please email me at [email protected]
Thanks,
Amber

There is actually a support group for parents whose children have SPD in the works. I, along with another mom, are getting it organized and preparing for our first meeting. If you or someone you know would like to join, please contact me at [email protected] for more information. We want to offer support, advice, and just share resources and stories.

Meeting Information:

Mark your calendars! Everyone's been talking about it - nutrition, enzymes, probiotics, neurotransmitters, food intolerances, gluten free, dairy free.... HELP! What do we do? How do we know what will work for MY child? How do we use these things to help our kids? What do we buy? How much do we give? Where do we start? Where do we get this stuff? What do we do!

Well, come find out. Dr. Sarah McAllister's here! A Pediatric Naturopath in Portland who can answer our questions - and more importantly, help our kids. Come find out all the practical information that can help your family daily.

P.S. Help spread the word - send folks the link to the yahoo messageboard site, post on other messageboards. Let's help our kids, by starting the conversation.

I'm in Vancouver. I just have the diagnosis for my child, and I would like to know if your meetings are still there... Or if you know about other groups here in Van. Thanks.

Gabriela and everyone else, how did your child get the SPD (SID) diagnosis?

"A Mom" That is a great question, I have been told by a preschool teacher that my daughter (then 3 yrs old) had ADHD... recently,at her 4 yr check our ped. mentioned ADD. I really wonder, after doing some research, if it is SPD (SID). We are having her seen by a developmental pediatrician and I am hoping to learn some new parenting skills that will help me to help her.

Does anyone know of a playgroup for children with SPD or Autism Spectrum (In addition to my 4yr old daughter craving stimuli...my 4yr old son, her twin, is very sensitive to stimuli and he is on the spectrum). It would be great to get together with other mom's who know what it's like to have "one of those day's" when you leave the crust on the toast...

Sensory processing disorder is called the neurological disorder. In this condition children are confused and they can not understand exactly, what they wants to do. Because brain can not detect the messages properly. Occupational therapy is the best treatment for this disorder.

Christina, have you had any answers?
