Do you have breastmilk to spare?

A mother in our community is looking for help from other mothers who are breastfeeding. Janet's little son August was born 6 months ago with missing genetic material, has had several surgeries and faces a host of developmental challenges. Please read Janet's email below, and help if you can:

I have run out of my frozen supply of breast milk for little August.  still pumping, but not producing enough for his overnight continuous feed of milk through his G-tube.   I am able to get enough for his feedings during the day though.  Anyone have a freezer full of milk, or know anyone producing copious amounts that would be willing to send some our way?  Please pass on my contact info to them. Thanks a bunch, Janet Funk 503-234-2693

Oh, Janet...I SO wish I were still breast-feeding as I would be more than happy to help! I just know some mamas out there will be able to help out! If there's anything else you need, just give a shout! Positive thoughts to you! kmw

Please check out the post on donating breastmilk on the Activistas page to learna dn share more on this important topic: http://urbanmamas.typepad.com//activistas/2007/09/donating-breast.html

Dear Janet,

I'm no expert on this topic and don't wish to give unsolicited advice, but I actually just read a La Leche League article that stated that breast milk from another mother can make your baby sick as they may contain viruses (viruses in your breast milk are okay because your baby has already developed immunities to them during gestation). This is why breast milk in milk banks is pasteurized to kill viruses. I don't know if your caregiver has advised you on this topic and if you're aware of these issues and they aren't a concern, please disregard my comments, just thought I might pass that along in case you weren't aware.

I just read your post and I do have a freezer full of milk. My daughter just turned 1 and will not drink anything except if it comes from me directly. I would be happy to donate to little August. I have donated to a milk bank with my first daughter, now 3, but had all the blood tests, etc. I could possibly get copies for your reference if you like? Feel free to shoot me an email.

You probably need my email :)

I run a Yahoo Group for moms with milk or moms that need milk to connect. There is no charge for the milk. This is by donation only. Feel free to pass this on:
