Finally: Water & Juice in a box

Thank you so much Leah for passing on this most excellent info!

"I have looked for 4 years for a juice box I can live with.  The average juiceMotts_tots box for kids has as much sugar and as many calories as a soda.  I bought the smaller size which helped.  I bought the refillable tupperware containers that are shaped like juice boxes, but I still wished for the simple answer. And, today, I found it.   At Target.  Tthere is now "Motts for Tots"....it is juice plus purified water, which is what our pediatrician had always reccomended: cutting the juice in half with water.  Anyway, I bought 4 cases of it.  It's finally here.  Cheers!"

Oh boy, I hear you. A while back we bought some of the Santa Cruz Organic juice boxes in a hurry only to discover they actually added sugar to it. But then I noticed that the Knudsen boxes had more sugar content listed on the nutrition label then those w/the added sugar. It's all a bit frustrating. Now if only Mott's would make these organic.

Oh wow. I am going to target tomorrow to see if they have it locally. I am always diluting my daughters juice this will make it so much easier.

Thanks

I looked at some today and noticed it's not 100% juice, but I don't know if that reflects the water added or the "natural flavors" that are added. I think the latter, but not certain. If so, I guess I'd rather get the real thing and use them sparingly. Anyone up on package labels?

I noticed that the nutritional facts said "54% juice" for the apple, but I think that's because it's 54% juice and 46% purified water. I think the juice part is 100% juice, and the non-juice part is the purified water.

From the website: "Mott’s for Tots contains 100% juice mixed with purified water".

Am I reading it right?

FYI, I just read an article about kids' snacks in Real Simple that stated that orange juice has far more nutrition ounce for ounce than apple juice ... anyone out there give their kids juices besides apple? (My daughter is still too little for juice, but we're headed there quickly!) And why juice over water + fruit slices? Sorry if these questions are a bit naive, I've only just mastered the finger food phase. (-: Would love knowledge from other mamas out there.

Amy3-as far as I know, juice is horrible for kids! It's sweet, empty calories that makes them only want more and thus not anything as bland as water. I didn't really give it to them until well over a year of age and then very diluted. They're older now and I don't have a problem offering it (all kinds) along with a variety of other drinks because we have a well established water love as well. I think a ban on anything only creates desire whereas the whole "moderation" thing seems to make sense. There are certainly some better juices out there than others, orange, carrot, spinach, etc. The lure of the juice box comes in it's transportability and the "special" factor in our house. We don't always have them around, so when we do it's pretty special. We also buy milk boxes, which you can find in soy, for our picnics and for treats. I do hate the excess packaging when using boxes, but again, moderation I guess.

Just a thought... I use to water down my kids' juice (which they very rarely ever got anyway) but our dentist, Dr. Pike, told me that it's a common misconception that watering down juice is better for them, especially on their teeth. He said it's like giving them candy. It's better to give them the whole bag at once and let their teeth have that one exposure to sugar than to dole the candy out slowly and have their teeth be exposed more often. We just don't really ever give them juice, it's a pretty special occassion at our house when they get it. My kids only drink milk and water and they're just use to that. We do have to be pretty careful because my 3.5 year old son has decay on his front two teeth from drinking milk before bed when he was little. Unfortunately he has a predisposition to cavities and we weren't always good about the brushing when he was little. Boy, his little sister sure does have pretty teeth though:-)

The only time my daughter gets juice boxes is when there is nothing else available and I haven't packed a sippy (bad mommy!). This happened at Baby Loves Disco and at birthday parties in the park most of all. I just discovered the organic milk boxes at Babies R Us this week and I am thrilled to see they do not have to be refrigerated until opened...I still don't get how that can be, although I did notice that a gallon of organic milk lasts near forever...so the milk boxes help, but now if we can get all urbanmamas to start providing the half-and-half at parties or providing other drink options, we will be all set! All hail pure clean water in a sippy cup!

I agree, the juice is a treat for our kids. It's all sugar even when it is 100% juice. We don't always stock juice at our house.

Juice boxes, however, are often seen at the birthday parties or in grab-n-go situations. I think the watered down version is a great alternative for such occasions. All in moderation, indeed.

I used to by Motts for Tots until I noticed that it was ALL made in China. No thanks Motts, I don't want food from a country that poisons it's own children with melamine in baby formula. I'm throwing the case out and looking for juice made in the USA!

I recently found a great option to the juice box. It's a product called Wateroos - and it is just naturally flavored water in a juice box. There is no sugar - and no splenda or other artificial sweeteners. It tastes like very, very diluted juice - but has no juice in it - just water and natural flavors. I found them at Toys R Us - so far, my kids seem to really like them.

Healthy Juices are a wonder in my life. I discovered them about one year ago in a friend’s house. She served us this delicious guava juice, which awoke curiosity in everyone that was present there. The beautiful color of the guava juice, its delicious taste and refreshing feeling are only some of the great aspects of drinking healthy juices such as the guava juice. We asked her how she had made it and she explained to us how easy it was to make and how we could make healthy juices out of basically every fruit and vegetable. That moment changed my perspective of healthy juices because I thought they were healthy but tasted horrible and right then and there I learned how incredibly delicious they are.

Of course, all of this is subject to taste, and nothing more than your own satisfaction is on the line when choosing your Burgundy wine glasses, so look for the glasses that allow you all of the above but most importantly, that you like and enjoy, because you need to feel comfortable with the wine you are drinking, and there is simply no better way than with the cup that pleases you. There are many kinds of glasses and it would be good for you to have several so you can also please your guests.

Good luck ,Great post,y love you! Thanks for the info it had cleared out too many things in my mind. Your recommendations are really good.
