Spanish Bilingual Playgroup

Diana is looking for or hoping to start a Spanish playgroup.  Do you know of one or are you interested?

Hi there, I hoping to find some Spanish bilingual families that would like to start a weekly playgroup.  I have 2 kiddos 3 and 1.5 and we are doing our best to raise them with both languages.  It would be wonderful if we could meet other families with children speaking Spanish as well.  We could start a group at each others houses where they can play and the parents could interact as well. Or we could even hire a bilingual nanny to come to the homes so the parents could get some quiet parent time.  We live in NE close in, and we'd love to meet neighborhood families, but any families who are interested with young kiddos would be welcome!  We'll figure something out!  Muchas Gracias!

Would you welcome new Spanish-speakers? I'm sort of enthralled with the language, and am a beginner, but I try to speak the few words and phrases I know to my little one (15 months). I'd love to know more!

I'd be interested, as I speak Spanish and hope to teach my daughter Spanish as well. The only thing is, she's only two months old right now. I don't know how early babies start enjoying play groups, and she isn't saying much more than "ohhhh" and "ahhhh" just yet. :)

we speak Spanish (it's my first language) and we'd love to spend some time getting to know other bilingual families... however, we live on the West side, so can we try to find a place to meet that's central? I'm afraid my youngest is developing a preference for English and has started telling me "no Mami, I don't want to you speak 'panish to me now." We're about to go to Mexico on a mission trip tho, so I hope when we get back both my sons will be chattering away in Spanish with me. Please let me know where & when!!!

We have two kids with our oldest being 5, in the Spanish immersion program at Beach and completely bilingual. Our youngest is 18 months. I would be interested in a playgroup lead by a Spanish speaking teacher. I do not speak Spanish but my partner does. The oldest has been on my case to learn for years now. We live in inner NE by Matt Dishman Community center.

Portland Early Learning Project offers this type of thing, though you do have to pay so it's more structure dthan a reg paygroup. Their website is www.pelp.com. I think they have one in August on Wednesdays at Urban Grind in NE.

Thanks for thinking of Portland Early Learning, Lisa! Just to clarify, our website is http://www.portlandearlylearning.com =)

Mamas, we received the following email, in case anyone is participating in a bilingual playgroup:

Hello! I'm a freelance writer working on an article about helping kids become bilingual for Metro Parent Magazine. I saw some postings on your site from local moms looking for bilingual playgroups, but I can't find any information about whether or not the playgroups were ever formed. Is there any way you could help me find families in the area who participate in bilingual playgroups? (One or two families would be great!)

Thanks so much for your time and any assistance you can offer! I'll look forward to hearing from you soon.

This is a very old discussion, but I'm just now finding it and wonder if anything came of it. Is there a bilingual play group? I would love to join in with my 2 little girls (1 and 2.5). I was at one time fluent in Spanish, but have digressed a ton. I would love to practice.

I was looking for some information on spanish/bilingual preschools in the sellwood area and came accross this discussion.. I would also be interested in a spanish speaking playgroup. I am a native spanish speaker and have a 3 year old that I want to teach the language to.. but since we don't speak spanish at home it has been challenging. if there is a playgroup already started we'd love to join or if not, we'd love to get together with some spanish speaking mamas!

Hi there,
This is an outdated post from a year ago but we are hoping to find other spanish speaking families (we can speak english but only speak spanish at home and with the kids). We live in southwest, but are willing to travel. I have 3 and 1 year old girls that only speak to me in spanish. I'd love to find others that are doing the same!

Hi, I'm interested in meeting other Spanish speaking parents. I speak only Spanish to my one year old and I would like him to make friends with other Spanish speaking children. I'm a native of Colombia. I've lived in the States for 25 years so I speak fluent Spanish and English. Please contact me if you are interested in a playgroup.

Thanks! [email protected]

Dear Amigas
We are two mums. My friend has grown up children and I have two small children 4 and 6 years old. We both are Spanish teachers. We have an idea that would like to share with a happy mum, teacher or nannie. Email me if you are interested .
Muchas gracias
Cecilia

Hi -- I see that this thread gets posted to periodically and I'm late to join in! My three-year old daughter is gradually building her Spanish vocabulary and I think an informal playgroup for this would be great! I spoke Spanish fluently as a child in New Mexico and have spent the past several years trying to get that back. We are in NE Portland.
Please let me know anything that is going on with this -- we are eager to keep learning!!

I know this is a very old post, but I have created a Spanish playgroup and would love to have any of you attend if you are interested. Here is some more information on the group:

¿Quieres jugar con tu niño en español? Somos un grupo de madres (y padres) que se reune todas las semanas para cantar, jugar y hablar . En cada reunion leyimos libros en espanol, cantamos dos o tres cancciones y los ninos juegan.

Do you speak Spanish or want to speak Spanish with your kids? Welcome to the PDX Spanish playgroup. I’m a bilingual teacher, but English is my first language. My children are 6 months and two years old.

We meet Thursdays at 3:30pm for an hour and at our meetings we read some books, sing a few songs and then have time for the kids to play and the adults to talk in Spanish.

Feel free to sign up to read the book for the playgroup, or have a few songs to lead in Spanish.

Q and A
Can I come if I don’t speak very much Spanish?
During the groups, we request that all of the adults only speak in Spanish (including when you talk to your own children). It is ok if you are learning Spanish, as long as you feel comfortable in this environment and can say simple things to your child in Spanish.

You can contact me at direct.tutoring (at) gmail (dot) com for more information.

Hi,I would love to join the bilingual playgroup. I have a two year old boy, I am from Guatemala and I speak to him in Spanish all the time. We have been looking for Kid's activities in Spanish but haven't found very much. Meeting once a week sounds fantastic. We live in SE Portland but don't mind driving a little bit for some interaction in Spanish.

Hola a todos! I am so happy to see all this interest in a spanish speaking playgroup.I have been looking around for a while now and hoping to find one! I hope it is happening somewhere eventhough some posts are older. We are a bilingual family - my husband is from Guatemala originally- and we are raising our 1.5 year old bilingually. We recently moved to NE Portland and would LOVE to meet up. Please let me know if you have some info for us. Mil Gracias.

If anyone is interested in starting a group up if in fact one is not happening ~ let's do it! hagamoslo! I am motivated and would love to participate in a group with my 1.5 year old son. We are in NE Portland.

We would love to find other bilingual families. With my daughter recently starting preschool and hearing more English, it would be terrific for her to know other kids speak Spanish at home too. We have a 2.5 year old and a 9 month old. We live in NE Portland. Would be happy to join an existing group or create a new one.

Hi Amy,
I'm sorry Im only now reading your post. I would really like to try and get something going for our bi-lingual kids. We have a son who is 22 months old and his spanish is starting to really flow and I think having other kids around to reinforce this would be great. We are also in NE Portland. My email is karbus21@hotmail. Let's connect!
