Immediate Preschool Openings Fall 2007

We have received numerous emails regarding searching for toddler and preschools openings this fall.  To help facilitate finding openings for those who have waited, or are desiring to switch programs last minute, we'd like to offer this post as a place to allow schools, centers, parents, etc. to let the urbanMamas community know of any opportunities.  Do you have any?  Please post in the comments.

Creative Minds Learning Center has openings for our Fall programs. We offer Toddler, Preschool and Kindergarten programs which feature the A Beka curriculum. Education is a natural part of a child's life and we believe in a structured program which facilitates their desire for learning. Our daily rhythm includes the Preschool and Kindergarten programs as well as cooking classes, music and dance, sign language, circle time, science and gardening as well as Reggio Emilia influenced art programs. Our programs include a graduation ceremony with State transcripts (since we are a private school for children ages 24 months- 6 years)and a diploma certificate. We hold parent/ teacher conferences and assesments, quarterly. 92% of children that have graduated our school are advanced readers and/ or math. To learn more about our beliefs and school, please check out our web site at: http://www.CREATIVEMINDSLEARNINGCENTER.com You may call us to schedule a meet and greet with your family at: (503) 252-0004 ext.1

Sunflower House Nursery School

Sunflower House Nursery School is a new school and is open for enrollment. We are a state certified pre-school and home childcare for ages 2 years – 5 years (I will consider 21+ months.)I am centrally located (in the NE) and easily accessible to both the NE and SE.

I have over 30 years experience working with and teaching young children. I earned my teaching certificate at Mira Costa College in California. I have taught in Waldorf Schools as well as schools with an emergent curriculum utilizing concepts from Reggio Emelia.

I have an eclectic philosophy that employs what I love best about Waldorf, Montessori, Reggio Emelia and Creative Curriculum. I offer art, music, science, pre-literacy skills and Kindergarten readiness, all through a developmentally appropriate framework that is essentially play.

My goal is to provide a happy home where children can flourish as members of a loving family and be embraced and valued for their unique beings. Sunflower House is a warm, calm, secure and nurturing environment in which a child’s imagination and creativity can thrive. Our environment and materials invite children to learn through play: by exploring, experimenting and discovering by themselves and with each other. I lay a positive foundation in learning as each child encounters success and becomes self-confident through a variety of experiences. As children learn to think for themselves, solve problems and get along with each other, the most important work of early childhood is being accomplished.

My curriculum gives your child the opportunity to experience art and music through different media, play instruments, sing with me as I play the autoharp or ukulele, create puppet shows, cook, garden, and explore science through nature in our own back yard. Rain or shine each day we spend time outdoors and will grow vegetables in the spring, summer and fall. We grind our own grain to cook porridge, make bread, tortillas, muffins and crackers for our snacks.

Sunflower House Nursery School is a wonderful opportunity for your family and child to experience love and community with mindfulness and joy to what each day offers.

I have my kids enrolled in Gabriel Park Preschool and I know there are more openings for the fall.

Gabriel Park Preschool is a non profit cooperative preschool for children ages 3-5 years old. We are located at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Southwest Portland. Our school is not affiliated with any religious denomination although we’ve been housed in St. Luke’s for over 40 years!

Family members, children and the teacher cooperate to make our school special. At GPPS, parents get to be involved in their child’s preschool experience. Parent involvement keeps tuition low and, more importantly, gives the school a rich, nurturing environment. Co-op preschools offer benefits to both children and parents.

I second Harmony Montessori. My daughter is starting her second year this fall and we love it. It's on the far out east side (139th north of Division), but most of the families commute (many from around Mt. Tabor) because it's such a great community.

Blue Skies and Butterflies is a small Reggio inspired school in South West, Beaverton. We serve Infants/Toddlers, Preschool and Kindergarten age children. Our cottage that houses infants and toddlers is full, and we are accepting children for Preschool and Kindergaerten. We have small ratios, excellent staff on a large facility with lot of outdoor options(gardening, hilly playground, grassy area and a hill to climb on) Come Visit for a tour.

Any suggestions on daycare for a 14 month old baby boy for this fall? The schools above look great...but, only take older kids. Looking for something in SE PDX. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

I'm not sure in what part of SE you're looking to find care. I'm near the Woodstock neighborhood, close to I-205. I have a toddler opening in my state-certified family child care home. You can visit my website at www.busybeedaycare.homestead.com to find out more about me and my business. Best of luck in your search.

Open Minds Preschool has space for one more 4 year old girl, beginning any time between now and September. We are a vegetarian semi-cooperative preschool on NE 19th near Fremont. Please read the details at www.openmindspreschool.com to schedule a visit.

Some of Portland's public schools have free Pre-Kindergarten classes for 4 year olds. The classes start on Monday, September 10. The PPS website lists which schools have a Pre-K program www.pps.k12.or.us. You can call the school directly to see if there are still spaces.

Thanks, npdx parent, for reminding us. We had an older post on Public Pre-K offerings here: http://urbanmamas.typepad.com/urbanmamas/2006/03/did_you_know_th.html

St. Michael's Lutheran Church has a wonderful pre-school on NE 29th and Dekum (near Concordia University)and has openings for Fall 2008. The teacher holds a Masters in Early Childhood Education and has taught for over 10 years. It is a 5 day per week preschool, from 8:30-11:30. The chirch subsidizes the program, so the rates are very reasonable--$160/ month. Call 503-282-0000 for more info or to set up an appointment.

St. Andrew Preschool in Beaverton is a leader among preschools. Here are some of the benefits we have to offer:

*Play-based curriculum that compliments children's different learning styles
*Curriculum that helps children grow cognitively, socially, emotionally and physically
*Age appropriate learning centers throughout the classroom

We have just moved to the Pearl District. My son is three years old adn I have been researching preschools/nurseries around Portland. There is so much to choose from,it is quite confusing. My son does not like very big crowds, and he is very eloquent, loves to have conversations and discussions. He also likes to read a lot.Loves to play (of course!) I think he would do better in smaller groups with more individual attention. Could anyone please suggest some good schools (full time M-F) around the Pearl district. I dont mind driving upto 15 miles if the school fits his needs. Thank you. ~Chitra
