Just Wading Around...
Summer has been upon us for days now and skies have been sunny (well, except for last Sunday). The pools have finished up their one-week free session and we're now onto Session 1 of the swim classes. But, what about the wading pools? When do they open? Which ones? When? What's the scoop? Sara asks:
Any word on which outdoor wading pools will be open this year, and when? I hear Mt. Scott is opening today, but I'm not sure on the time. What about Kenilworth Park?

I believe I saw some waders in the Montavilla wading pool. We were at the "big" pool for lessons, but kids were over there playing...

Here is some wading pool schedule info from PP&R:

and here is the playground program schedule:

There are also a number of "spray on demand" water play features, like at Irving Park and Woodlawn Park where you have to touch something to activate a 5 minute cycle of water play. Not the same as a wading pool, but not the same limitations on hours. I couldn't find a list of these, but this is a list of all parks with either a wading pool or a spray feature:

Have fun!

Montavilla wading pool is now open on nice days. They do close it for an hour (or is it thirty minutes?) at around 11:30 though...
We also like the water feature at Essex Park (SE 79th and Center) and there is a hidden away park in East Portland at SE 118th and Raymond. On weekdays this park is never crowded, in my experience at least. Both of those are the "spray on demand" kind and are great fun.
Although, to be fair, I would recommend bringing band-aids. We haven't had any problems but they are on concrete and I've seen some kids fall and get scraped knees. Then they're right back in the water!

I just sent out the wading pool schedule to some friends today. We spend much of the summer at the Laurelhurst wading pool. It is open daily from 11-5. The schedule says longer hours, but they drain it about 5 every day.
It's kind of shady, so as the days get really hot, it's a great cooling off spot!

The Columbia Park wading pool is open from 12:30 until 3:15 weather permitting. I love it as its not busy (last year there were usually only a few kids in it at any one time) and its a shady area with a play structure right next to it. Its on the corner of Lombard and Woolsey, if youre coming from I-5 on Lombard, turn right on Woolsey not left. The park is divided by Lombard and both sides have play areas.

We just tried another wading pool in North Portland...its in Kenton Park and although its in full sun, this one has a spray feature while it fills up and on Friday the staff set up an enormous slip and slide down the hill. A HUGE hit with all the kids including my son who is 3.5 yrs. I asked if it was going to be a daily event and was told probably just on very hot days but she was sure they would set it up this coming Monday. We will be going back for sure. Also...as with Columbia Park, they do a free lunch program starting at noon for those that are interested. Im not sure on exact times for the wading pool but I think from about noonish till 4.
