B&B Romance for the urbanParents

What an absolutely lovely idea:

My husband and I are coming up on our 10th wedding anniversary and we'd like to make it more special than the usual dinner out. With young kids and other committments it isn't practical to go too far, but oh, how romantic it would be to spend the night at a local bed and breakfast (instead of returning from a candlelit dinner to the mood-killing sight of legos all over the living room). Can anyone recommend a nice B&B in town? (It doesn't have to be super-upscale.)

When some family visited last year, they stayed at the White House in NE Portland (Irvington perhaps?). They loved it. They particularly raved about their beautiful room and yummy food!

I've heard great things about the White House. You could also check www.tripadvisor.com in the Portland section - they always seem to be talking about B and Bs.

The Inn at Marquam Hill is a nice little place with quite reasonable rates. The owner, Mike Watson, is very friendly and makes a terrific breakfast. There's a larger "suite" with a private batch that would be the best choice. It's a pretty intimate, informal place, though very nicely decorated. You'd probably want to check it out first to make sure it's what you're interested in. Here's the URL:

We went to this BB the night of our wedding. We had the corner room with the view of Mt. St Helens. It was beautiful yet it felt very private.

The White House is really lovely. If they are booked, another place we've enjoyed is the Georgian House in Irvington. Willie - the owner - is incredibly nice and her garden/gazebo area is just beautiful. http://www.thegeorgianhouse.com/Courtyard.htm

My family enjoys staying at The Lion and the Rose in Northeast near Broadway and 15th. The owners are friendly and serve a good breakfast. It's nice, quiet and calm with a variety of places to eat and drink within easy walking distance.

Thank you for all the suggestions! Keep 'em coming!

You could stay at McMennamins Edgefield. They have a wine tasting room and several pubs on the grounds. It is fun to roam around and bar hop and usually on the weekend there is live music. The gardens are beautiful (and there is even a little golf course). The Black Rabbit Restaurant on-site is delish.

P.S. watch out though..most of the rooms have shared bathrooms. If you want your own restrooom you must request it.

There's a great and affordable B&B called the Barnstormer Inn in Scappoose. My husband and i wanted to get out of the city, but not too far and this was perfect. They have a hottub, and family style breakfast.

We have had a couple of getaways to McMenamins Grand Lodge in Forest Grove.

They have some spa services, soaking pool, movie theater, restaurants (good happy hour prices), and frisbee golf. Rooms include breakfast and the rates are reasonable. No TVs in the room to distract you from each other is also a plus in our book.

We generally opt for a room with a private bath but we shared a bath once - it turned out that we shared it with no one.

It is close enough to Portland for a quick overnight. There are vineyards in the area and it is a short trip from the Grand Lodge to the coast, so there are plenty of touring opportunities away from the lodge as well.

It isn't unusual for there to be pretty reasonable packages or specials there. Certainly not as unique or homey as a traditional B and B but we have always enjoyed it:
