Seeking Cute Kid Backpacks
Emily is looking for suggestions on cute packs for kids. She writes:
Kind of a random question, but does anyone have ideas of where to find a cute, simple, not-too-expensive backpack of appropriate size for a preschooler to carry? I don't want one with cartoon characters on it, like I'd find at Target, Fred Meyer, etc. I know there are cute animal ones out there, just don't know where to find them! Thanks.

oompa.com has lots of cute bags, many of which are pretty pricy from haba and blabla, but there are some really cute affordable ones there as well.

Last December we got Gabby a cute ladybug backpack that also includes a retractable handle and wheels on the bottom. She can wear it on her back or pull it behind her. She's two and a half years old and loves playing with it. I think it was around $22 or so. They had other ones too - frogs, ducks, and various other animals.

My son has a REALLY cute one, in the shape of a Ducky. I have a link to it on my travel blog: CarSeatTraveler.com. I can't get the link to post so click on January archives and scroll down 'til you see the picture.
The company also makes penguins and other animals. We can SO many comments all through the airports when we travel back home to Oregon. It's quite funny how much interest people have in it!

We buy our sons' backpacks at REI. They look normal and cute, without the advertising or silly cartoons.

Hannah Anderson makes backpacks that are small, sturdy, and appropriate for young children. We got one years ago, and it is still my son's favorite. I have also noticed some really cute children's backpacks at the Rack made by Jansport; again, with no media images on them.

I have seen some really cute ones at Sweet Peas, a consignment children's resale store in Sellwood. It's going to be hit and miss since it's a consignment shop but they almost always have backpacks in there and you can't beat the prices ($2-$10).

I recently bought a Stephen Joseph backpack - love it. Very cute, nicely made. I bought it at Mako on NW 23rd for about $23.00 and also saw them at Spoiled Rotten in Sellwood (though I think they just recently moved).
Portland Luggage Company sells the Sammies -- also very cute and seem to be well made.

I also came across some Stephen Joseph backpacks at www.itsjust4me.com and my kids loved it.
It cost about $25 which is not too bad as I got to personalize it. Very cute designs!
