Good Side-By-Side Stroller?
Angela is seeking your advice on strollers. She writes:
I'm looking for recommendations for a great side-by-side double stroller with front wheels that swivel. I've been researching for weeks on the Internet and would love some hip-mama input. Also, where can you go to try some of them out? Babies 'R Us has a very limited selection--where else do you go? And I'm not opposed to spending some money, as baby #3 is coming soon--we'll be strollin' for quite a while!

Hey Angela,
Most of my Stroller Strides moms (myself included) have the BOB Revolution Duallie. It's awesome! I actually got a flat tire the other day and had to use my old Graco front/back stroller and I was dying! The BOB has the swivel front wheel that can be locked for jogging, has a large storage compartment on the bottom, and opens/closes really easily. I now use this stroller as my all purpose stroller as it fits through all doors (I know that some of the older double jogging strollers were too wide for some doors.) You can go to bobtrailers.com to check them out and REI carries them.

I don't know much about double strollers, but babystyle.com has a really nice collection of strollers, doubles included. It's more of a boutique website (they have a catalogue, too... clothes to die for!), so they have cooler options (i think) than Babies R Us.

I love my Bob Duallie. I got it at Segals in Beaverton (a fave). They have lots of models there to choose from and will let you take them outside to try them out. If you've got #3 on the way, there are also some models that allow you to put a third seat on the frame. I don't know the brand, but they have them at Segals. They're pretty cool.

I am a big Maclaren fan. we have a single volo and I always intended to get a side by side double Maclaren when I had two kiddos. so far I've managed without, as it's an expense, but when it comes time to spend the money, to Maclaren I will go.

i've got a maclaren twin techno that i picked up at costco right before christmas. it's great for around the neighborhood to the park and store, trips the zoo, etc. it folds down very compactly (for a double) and easily. the rain cover is easy to put on, and it has a nice foot muff to keep the baby warm. i've been very pleased with my impulse purchase!

We just had baby #2 and we bought the Aria Twin by Peg Prego. It is the lightest stoller ever, has storage room and it's easy to fold up. WE LOVE IT!!! You really should check out Segals in Beaverton..they have the best selection and may even give you a discount...as we were able to get our stoller for 10% off. http://www.segalsforchildren.com/
Good luck!

We have the Schwinn Free Runner 2 and I love it SO much. I have a 2 year old and a 4 year old and it pushes really smoothly (even running) and is big enough to accomodate them both comfortably. The seats recline independantly, both the sun canopy and storage basket are huge, but the best part is that the rain shield is stored in the sun canopy and just folds right out and attaches to the front wheel, going right back into the sun canopy when you're done. It also folds down quite compactly. I can't say enough about it, except that the price is right too!

I have the Inglesina double and it's ok. It's fairly inexpensive compared to others, and is narrow enough to fit through doorways. I live in Hawthorne and have used this thing through just about every shop. That being said, I wouldn't buy it again. I think it's hard to maneuver and the canopy doesn't really work. It's also quite heavy (only good when you want to burn extra calories). I have two neighbors who got the Bob double with the swivel-y wheel in the front and I think it's great. If I had to do it all over again I would spend the extra and get that one.

For a non-jogging type stroller, I have a Maclaren Twin Traveler and have used it since my boys were just days old. I like it because it reclines, has decent canopies and comes with a great rain cover and "boots" to keep the little legs warm. It is sturdy, fits through doors, and is relatively compact for a double-wide. Drawbacks are that it is on the heavy side and quite expensive. I second the advice to go to Seagals and try them out before you buy. They have a good selection and knowledgable staff.

My sister bought me a great sit and stand stroller which she found online. I love it and would highly recommend. http://www.joovy.com/

Mamas -
Any more thoughts on side-by-sides, especially for brisk walking and jogging? We've received a recent email from Erin:
"I'm looking for advice from Mamas on double strollers. I a baby due in May and a toddler who will be 2 1/2 at the time. I want a light-duty jogger for Baby Boot Camp. I don't run off road or anything serious, just in parks and such. In my research I've found the usual suspects in the side-by-side market: BOB, Dreamer Design, etc., and a couple of interesting single strollers with attachable toddler seats: Valco Baby and Phil & Teds. I like the versatility and relative compactness of the single, but I concerned am the toddler seats may not be as comfortable. They don't have sunshades, on the Valco they can't sit back, and on the Phil & Teds, they can't see straight ahead. Does anyone have experience with these strollers and a 2 - 3 year old? Is the side-by-side worth the space in the car and having to find someone to hold most doors open? Any advice for double strolling with a toddler & infant? Thanks!"

I love my E3 (Phil & Teds). As to your concerns (which were mine as well):
- The toddler attachable seat is almost identical to the main seat in design, so there is no discernable difference in comfort.
- Sunshade issue really isn't relevant for the back seat, since the sun is blocked by the front seat. On those extra sunny days, the baby wears a hat, or I can drape a blanket across the top. But I can only count 1 time I've had to do that.
- Not seeing straight ahead doesn't bother the baby (I have a 1 & a 4 year old) as it's all she's known. And she's low to the ground, looking at all the fun stuff on either side. My 4 year old will sometimes even beg to sit in the back. The only drawback with longer legs in the rear seat is that they have to rest in the "storage" below. My solution for carrying stuff (like groceries) was to get the pannier bags on the side.
What I love most about it is that it's sooo easy to remove the rear toddler seat for those times when I take one kid solo. And with the older one in preschool, that is happening more frequently. I am so glad I'm not looking at a half-used double on my porch!
Hope that helps!

Hi,
A double pushchair comes in two configurations, the tandem and the side-by-side. In tandem pushchairs, the seats are arranged such that one seat is directly behind the other, whereas the side-by-side configuration has the seats arranged side by side to each other so that both kids can enjoy the same scenery in front of them. These jogging strollers are intended to be used when parents go for a run or a quick walk.
