urbanMamas new year's day hike?
I was perusing the many active annual events with which Portlanders ring in the New Year -- I myself have participated in the very fun and surreal First Run -- and mentally checking them off my list of possibilities. The First Run is too late (at midnight New Year's Day), too much bundling and bussing with two young (and not always perfectly-behaved) boys. There's a First Day of the Year Ride sponsored by the BTA, from noon to 3 p.m. on New Year's Day. It's a nice idea but I'd rather do something in which the boys can actively participate -- we're not tagalong-ing yet, so they'd just be sitting in the trailer.
Since I'm always one for cockamamie ideas, and also, I like to save my pennies, I thought, why not make something of our own? What about an urbanMamas New Year's City Hike? It would be a lovely, active and easy-going way to start off a brand-new year -- and kids could participate in strollers, backpacks or on their own two feet.
If you'd like to join in, please let me know in the comments, and give me any feedback -- where might you like to go? Should we do a neighborhood tour and stop at some highlights, coffee shops and cute little parks (and rotate, different neighborhoods for each new year)? Should we hit some urban pedestrian pathways, like the Eastside Esplanade? How far would you like to hike? I'll post a meeting spot here sometime before Sunday.

Ooooh, I love the idea! Can urban Dads come too?
I like the Eastside Esplanade idea (but will it be too cold?)

Great idea! My spouse and I have been doing it for years, then with our dogs in tow, and now with our son, too. It's our family tradition of starting the year off right -- thought we prefer to escape the city for more natural settings (so the dogs can roam). Last year our son was in the Kelty backpack carrier, but this year...? He may be roaming the woods, too!
Let's hope it's a dry day for all who venture out! Have fun!!

I am also interested! I have a 14 month old son that I'd probably put in our Kelty.

Hi . . . for some reason I can't read the rest of the first posting about new years excursions, and I'm really interested! It cuts off at "There's a . . ." and then everyone responds that it sounds like a great idea!! What is it? Thanks...

Lia, I was suggesting that we get some families together for an urbanMamas urban hike at 10:30 a.m. New Year's Day! I'll be posting a meeting spot in the comments once I decide upon one, sometime before Sunday.
and oh yes, urbanPapas definitely are invited!

I'm interested! Just post what you decide. The 3 year old and I will try to make it. Sorry I don't have a good suggestion, I think you'll be better at planning something than I would. I'm open to most anything, even though I'm partial to ending up at a warm place.Well, keep us posted! Good idea!

Me, my husband, 3.5 YO and 1 YO are in. We are relatively new to the area, so if its a hike in the woods please let me know if its stroller accessible (the rugged kind) or just packs. Thanks.
