Coupons are always nice to find for sure, but I'm not so keen on the idea that Zenana is ADVERTISING in the forums. Save that for the margins. Imagine if every sponsor did that. How many posts would you have to wade through to find meaningful content from other mama's. Isn't that what this site was intended to do?

but at the same time, all posts are approved by the uM organizers... and this is also a forum to provide support and networking opportunities for locally-owned/mama-operated businesses. which is a good thing!

Hi there,
I just wanted to apologize if this wasn't ok to post to this forum. I had noticed the Bella Stella sale, and figured, since that had been posted, our gift card offer would be similarly welcomed. We of course do not want to do anything inappropriate in terms of advertising, so again, apologies if that is how this post was construed. Just as a side note, though, we cannot post anything directly - all posts are sent to urban mammas, and someone there, is, presumably, deciding what gets posted. I eagerly await clarity on what constitutes appropriate posting in this forum. Thanks, and happy holidays!

I must admit, my first response to this was the same as hippie mama's. At a playgroup on monday the topic came up (we're all avid UM readers) and the consensus was that it was an ad and we felt a little bombarded.
However, I think this mama has a point too and I can see what she's saying.

Maybe I am feeling especially sensitive because of all the holiday marketing but I have been surprised to see the number of sponsors and ads grow on the site. But I can understand that there are expenses to pay.
I am in agreement with hippie mama, I think advertisements should be on the sidebar not in posts. There have also been more than a few comments that are basically ads but those aren't as visible so they don't bother me so much.

Thanks for the input, Mamas. We try our best to post things that we personally find useful. So if this seemed like blatant advertisment, please forgive us. We try our darnest to filter out content that readers would find useful. We get bombarded with all types of requests and questions and we do our best to post what we think is appropriate. Sometimes we cannot appease everyone.
As far as the sponsorship goes, the site was never meant to generate tons of money and never will be. However, hosting the site is not free and any expenses that we've incurred thus far have been out of pocket. The other four mamas and I that started the site are all full-time working moms. We're not some corporation trying to turn this into a profitable enterprise. We update the site at night when our kids are in bed, or when we can't sleep, or when we manage to find some spare time between shoving food in our kids mouths and baths. We never imagined that urbanMamas would grow so much so quickly, or have the expansive readership it does. We truly appreciate your comments whether positive or negative, and that is the only way we can improve the site.

This comment may not belong here, but all hail Hau and the other founding uM's - we appreciate you!! No worries. (PS - I bought my Chinook Book at Milagros for the cause...)
