Frozen organic baby food in PDX
I really wanted to just feed my son freshly pureed organic food when he was a wee babe starting on solids. I tried, I really did. But no matter what I did, he didn't like what mama was making and I was frustrated by the whole experience (and yes, I did try some at least 10-15 times to see if he would eventually like it...no dice...he preferred the jarred stuff).
Now two new companies are offering frozen organic baby food in Portland: Happy Baby and Nice Cubes. Both are available at New Seasons, and Nice Cubes is available also at Whole Foods and Food Front Coop. Nice Cubes is developed by a local mama, and I happen to know there is another local mama developing a cool home delivery service of fresh organic baby food. I can't wait! If any mamas or papas out there has tried Happy Baby or Nice Cubes out, please let us know what you think!

I volunteered for the Nice Cubes testing. It seemed fine as far as frozen baby food goes, but my gal (then 8 months old) wasn't very into it. She refused all jarred stuff, so the fact that she would eat this was a triumph in itself I suppose, but it is not like she was licking the plate or anything. It was very convenient, as the "cubes" were a good serving size for babies.

Our daughter, who just turned one, still loves to eat the Happy Baby baby dhal and mama grain cubes. They are actually quite yummy and I buy them at Whole Foods. I concur about the convenience of the frozen cubes and the price is pleasantly affordable.

I met the lady who started Nice Cubes at Milagros, and liked her a lot...when I saw them yesterday at New Seasons I picked up a box even though I've been making my own. Rowan loves the food cubes still frozen...yum. Nice work mama.

We love Nice Cubes! A local mom and dad created this...we should support that! My 10 month old loves the sassy squash and the gentle lentils (great names). We haven't tried the fruit yet but we will soon.

We've tried the Happy Baby dhal and mama grain cubes with our 10 month old daughter. She was hesitant with both but seemed to like the dahl better than the mama grain. But that's after only one try. We've also tried Plum Organics beef stew from Wild Oats. She really liked that one.
I usually shop at New Seasons on SE Division and hadn't seen any frozen baby food. Is this a new product they're carrying? Does anybody know?

I wish these cubes had been available when my son was starting solids. He's 16 months old now and eats anything, but I had to try the Happy Baby and Plum Organic products anyway. He loves the baby dahl... can't get enough -- I need to find a recipe! He also enjoys the Plum vegetable beef stew and chicken and rice. These are great convenience foods and definitely taste better than jarred food (which he hated).
For convenience, I've also been making my own baby food cubes from everyday meals -- if I make a pan of lasagna, I put portions in the ice cube tray. Or if I'm pressed for time, sometimes I'll buy an organic frozen meal (like a mac and cheese or lasagna) and divvy it up in the ice cube tray. (This actually worked better when he ate less -- he's such a piggie now that it's more cost-conscious to make a small batch of pasta and mix it with sauce and cheese and freeze it.) Anyway, the point is, just remember you can make your own food cubes from leftover chili, soup, pasta, etc. rather than letting the leftovers waste away in the fridge.

I just picked up some Nice Cubes at SE Division New Seasons over the weekend. (They had Happy Baby, too.) My little guy's been sick so we haven't tried them yet. But nice packaging and love that it's local.

I just bought some of the Happy Baby cubes. I tasted the pear this morning and thought it was delicious! My guy is not a picky eater (he pretty much eats anything that is not nailed down) but I like the idea of giving him something that actually tastes good. Also, I thought the price was pretty reasonble.

I feed my son Fifibear's Brasserie and he is really picky! he actually ate all of it ! I was so excited because I tried every baby food out there and this is the only one he eats... They have chicken varieties , so I know my son is getting enough protein... it also has ground flaxseed and is organic... I pick them up at Whole Foods in the freezer section, but I'm in the LA area, so I dunno if it is available anywhere else yet.... I'm sure they'll be in other markets very soon- they deserve to be!
