Naturopath for Kids
There is something in the autumn air that makes us want to seek out trusted health care providers. Sharon posted a question on a recent thread:
I am looking for a naturopath for kids. Does anyone have a good one?
... To which Tia promptly responded:
In response to Sharon's query, my beloved midwives (Nora Tallman and Catherine Schaefer) are NDs who also provide women's health care and pediatric services. See http://agentlebeginning.com/ for more info. I found both Nora and Catherine to be kind, flexible, and generous of spirit...
Does anyone else have suggestions?

I love my ND. I see Dr. Mona Bhalla at Numinosity. She's great with kids and adults alike.

Dr. Lori Beth Stargrove specializes in the care of women and children and we have been thrilled with the care provided to our 2 girls. She is located in downtown BVTN. Her husband also practices in the same office.
Dr. Erica Koch is in SE and many friends see her. I have been to a couple of classes that she has given and have been impressed, but she isn't convenient to see.

I love my naturopath, Dr. Susan Roberts. She is also a midwife. She took care of me during my pregnancy and would have delivered my baby at home, had it worked out that way. She teaches at the naturopathic college and has a very balanced perspective about medical care. And she makes house calls!

Thank you all! There are so many choices. I really appreciate the response.

Mamas,
We've received email from Rae requesting any additional suggestions you may have:
"I'm in desperate search of a really good natropath that has experience with little ones. We're in NoPo so someone near us would be nice, but i'm willing to travel. My biggest criteria is that I want someone who will respect our family nurse practitioner and the medical care that he is also providing us. I'm going for a well rounded approach here. On that note, do any other mamas or dads have a natro that they just love? We'd love to meet him/her!"

Has anyone been to Ananda Kramer, N. D.?
I'm considering taking the whole family to her and looking for some feedback.
Thanks.

My daughter and I both have seen Dr. Ananda Kramer. She has done some really amazing things with my daughter when she was sick. She seems very knowledgeable. I have recommended her to other friends. Good luck!

Our daughter's friend's mom is a pediatric naturopath, who has a ton of experience in family medicine, counseling, accupunture, and natural medicine. Her name is Michelle Sturm: http://thehousesofhealing.com/
I believe she practices in a couple of different locations in N/NE Portland.

Mamas,
If anyone else has additional suggestions for a pediatric naturopath, Samantha has just emailed:
"I have 2 children who have been seeing a pediatrician at Broadway Medical Clinic since birth. My 3 year old daughter is healthy as a horse and its been fine for
her, but I fear my 1 year old son has some issues that are not being addressed. I don't think anything super serious is going on, but its enough that I am slightly worried and trying to be proactive. And I don't feel that I am being heard or that the issues are getting the attention they deserve. I would like to take my son to a ND, but my husband is nervous of anyone who
does not have an MD. So, does anyone know of a naturopathic doctor who also has a medical degree? I live in SW but I'd be willing to drive anywhere for the right person. After reading all the posts on peds, I've seen Monique's name many times in Sellwood and may try her, but I'd still like to see someone who would look at some alternatives to traditional medicine."

Naturopathic Physicians are top of the line primary care docs! They undergo atleast 4 years of graduate school training in order to become doctors. The first two years of training delve deeply into physiology, biochemistry, anatomy, immunology etc.. to be on par with western medical schools. The following two years are spent deepening the knowledge of the organ systems and learning a vast array of treatment modalities, from pharamceutical medicine to homeopathy, herbal medicine, nutrition and physical medicine. Also, hundreds of hours of clinical rotations are required to get the degree.
In response to your husbands concern of an MD being more knowledgable than an ND, it has been my experience that ND's have a far more extensive education than any western medical school. Naturopathic training is to find the cause of disease, address that and then support the organ systems to ensure optimal health in a variety of non-invasive ways.
I second just about every recommendation made thus far and also encourage you to visit Dr. Richard Barrett at NCNM.

Mamas, Can anyone help Stevi?
"I am having trouble finding a Dr. for my three month old daughter. We have chosen not to immunize her and this is limiting our options severely!
I called around to doctors who accepted my insurance and I found one that the receptionist said would have no problem seeing her without her being immunized - However, that was not the case and we left his office almost in tears.
I need either a pediatrician or an ND who accepts infants, preferrably one who will accept Cigna, in the greater Portland area.
I don't mind calling around to find out if they take my insurance, so if you know a good doctor, but aren't sure of the ins. give me their info anyways.
I have exhausted all of my resources for finding a dr. so someone please help!!
My email address is stevigreen6991@msn.com"

Great info on ND's. Our family is low income, so I'm looking for an ND that has low rates or a sliding scale. In South East Portland.

My 9 year old daughter has always had difficulties going to sleep. Lately it's become much much worse. Can anyone recommend a Naturopath who specializes in this area?

Sarah McAllister is an EXCELLENT pediatric naturopath who I would highly recommend. We take both of our kids to her. She answers all emails and phone calls outside of your visits and spends a minimum of an hour with you at each appointment. She use to be a past sleep training coach as well. She has given us some tips to help out our 4 year old, who has SPD, with sleeping.

We see Dr. Rose Paisley at Nature Cures Clinic. We chose the clinic, honestly, because it's easy for us to MAX to (just a couple of blocks from the downtown library) and have been pleased. She totally supports our decision not to vaccinate and has been very informative about food and diet! The clinic offers a sliding fee scale.

If you move to WA the best doc is Dr. Kathleen Allen. She's an ND, midwife, and an IBCLC! She also teaches Neonatology at Bastyr. She is awesome with our kids! She's a great listener and teacher. Talks to kids on their level. She specializes in women's health too. Check her out at www.motherchildmedicine.com

I have found Dr Lisa Beneitz located in Multnomah village as a Naturaopath for my little one. Has anyone seen her? any feedback will be greatly appreciated. My baby has some skin irritation past 2-3 weeks....my baby's pediatrician Dr. Paul Thomas says it could be fungal or could be eczema or some allergy & gave him antifungal cream with steroids :(...he is not sure and the skin issue is not going away(it did go away initally after applying the cream but then came back)....it is less on his groin area and more on his chest & arms so difficult to digest that it is fungal as fungal is more for hidden places. So now our new ND gave her some tea tree and grape seed extract containing powder to apply for irritation and to use Dr. Bronner's castile soap & for me to eat fish oil....it is getting better but not fully. Any help if you have seen the same issue on your baby. I beleive in homeopathy a lot, any suggestions for a ND who practice homeopathy
Thanks

Any recommendations for a pediatric ND who can work with our toddler's asthma, without making me feel worse about the medicines we're already using, and without sending me home with a dozen supplements?

I have a five month old daughter with a severe congenital heart defect. She has already had two open heart surgeries and will still need at least one more. I would love to begin taking her to a naturepath that is an expert in dealing with pediatrics. Does anyone know of an excellent naturepath that would be comfortable/knowledgeable in dealing with a cardiac baby? Thank you!

Has anyone been to or heard of Dr Raina Lasse? She's the only Portland Naturopath I can find with a specialty in Pediatrics that my insurance (Blue cross Blue Sheild) covers. I can't find any reviews..
Thanks!

Hello, I am looking for a Naturaopath who specializes in babies with eczema. My six month old son has had eczema since he was a few months old. I think it could be linked to food allergies (via breastmilk), but am having a hard time getting clear guidance from my MD pediatrician on how to alter my diet.
If anyone has a recommendation of an ND who is particularly good with babies and eczema, I would greatly appreciate it!

Hey Jennifer,
This is a couple of months late, but I would suggest Dr. Meredith Distante in Camas, WA. I know that sounds far away, but really it's not if you live on the eastside of Portland. She is great!
From experience with my son and eczema, I would suggest cutting cow's milk dairy out of your diet (although kefir is probably fine to keep in.) My son's eczema showed up when he was under a year and I was nursing. His pediatrician said that it would go away by itself, but it just got progressively worse. I did research myself and found out dairy can be a big culprit. When I cut out dairy his eczema slowly went away. When he got older I gave him kefir, almond milk, rice milk and goat's milk yogurt for calcium, protein and fat. (Dr. Distante recommended no soy milk.) Now that he's over 3 he is tolerating cow's dairy. Hopefully you can have similarly positive results!

Dr. Distante is with Blossom Natural Health.
