Infant Childcare in NE
I was talking to a mama recently, who has a great new job and is seeking childcare in the NE for her 10 month old son. She prefers in-home care, but is interested in different scenarios accommodating part-time schedules.
Also, Christie is looking:
I am due in March and looking for child care for my infant beginning in June (probably 4 days a week, maybe 5). I think nannies are out of our price range, but will take suggestions for good childcare in general. I would really like to find somewhere in Cully, Alameda, Irvington, Hollywood areas (we live off Fremont and 50th and both will be working downtown). Does anyone have experience with Growing Seeds, Little Pandas, Alameda Beaumont Childcare (not sure if they take infants), or anywhere else?
A few previous posts: Preschool Wanted in NE, Seeking Childcare in NE/SE/NW. A couple of comments on Growing Seeds. Also, here is a comment on Alameda Beaumont Childcare. I don't think we've heard anything yet on Little Pandas. If you have any thoughts or insight for NE childcares, please share!

Christie - thank-you so much for posting this question. I am also looking for infant care in the NE and am excited to see the suggestions people make. One note for you, I called Alameda Beaumont Childcare and was told they do not provide infant care. They recommended both "As I Grow" and "Early Years". Good luck with your search!

I know this is not NE, but my day care provider has room for kids over 2 in the SE area, near Woodstock. She is great. Right now it's just my 16 month old and her 6 month old. She is a midwife student taking time off to be with her child. She is a strong believer in aattachment parenting and breastfeeding, and has accomidated my vegetarian wishes wtih enthusiasm (she has my kid eating all sorts of bean dishes, with all sorts of nutritional value, which is worlds above our normal mac and cheese!). I can't say enough great things about her. Feel free to email me if you want to get in touch with her.

Our son is at Growing Seeds, the Hollywood location. He has been there a couple of months and is now 12 months old. We actually switched our son from another childcare center to Growing Seeds, and we have been happy with the switch. The providers are nice, communicative, and manage to remain upbeat in what I think has got to be a pretty tiring job (our one son is a handful for us!) I would ask for a tour and see what you think.
Another idea: a friend of mine here at work has her two children at "In a Child's Path" which is at 3053 Ne 66th Ave. She is happy with them too.
Both of these places take infants.

My 14 month old son is at Growing Seeds and has been since he was 5 months old. The care is awesom! They provide organic food for the kiddos that eat, cloth diapers AND they go outside everyday. Get on the waiting list, because there are only 4 infant spots a day. They also have an MLK location.

We have our good friends coming down from Seattle with their (very active!) 6 and 8 year old sons. They are looking for a fun place to stay in town. We considered the Kennedy School, but they are booked and only have rooms with one queen bed. Does anybody have other suggestions along those lines?
Thanks!

I have been wanting to change careers and love kids. I work full time, but take care of my 20 month old grandson 2 days a week.
I was thinking of doing a mini-daycare maybe 2 to 3 infant to 3 year olds in the Northeast. I love to cook and so would like to start a "pick up you baby and your dinner" service a few days a week as I know from experience how hard it is to come home and fix a healthy, enjoyable meal. I am in the Southwest right now, but am thinking of relocating to the Northeast. I would so appreciate some feedback on this idea and was very happy to find your website.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hello, I am excited to announce I will be opening one of the first (if not the first) "Waldorf" inspired Infant care homes in Portland Oregon.(its right off Burnside & 30th)
I am looking for very committed parents who believe in Waldorf & RIE methods. We are a media free space with only Mother Nature as our greatest source of inspiration & your child's natural curiosity. Your child will be surrounded by natural beauty, gentle hands, warm hearts & soothing daily rhythm. We will sing, play, & explore each day. The surroundings are soothing with toys like, silks, wooden toys felted animals, & home made toys. We will bake, clean, garden & play our day away! We will go outside each day as well. We are only 4 blocks away from Laurelhurst Park.
There will be room for 4 infant’s age 5 months-14 months old. The rest of the children will be age 15 months to age 3. I expect to take about 12 children a day with 3 care givers. Hours of operation will be from 8:30-4:30 M-F
I have my preschool only 5 minuets away & have had a very successful business for the last 3 years. I have started 3 schools, have a long list of recommendations, & have been a lead teacher for 15 years. I have a degree in early childhood Waldorf education, a small business certificate, and countless hours of continuing education. We are an ECO friendly childcare & use no pesticides, harmful, chemicals or cleaners.
Throughout the year we plan many events for all the families to enjoy. Like, farm trips, potlucks, park time & toy making. There will be newsletters & daily notes sent home about your child’s day. We will offer parenting classes as well. It is going to be much more than just a day care. We are anticipating our grand opening August 2007.
Are you a pioneer? Please contact me if this seems like a fit for you. You can check out my web site for my other school & learn more about me at the web site below.

I toured "Village Child Care, LLC" recently, across from Legacy Emanuel. They offer infant care thru preschool. Does anyone have any info or experience with them? I have never had out-of-home infant care before and am nervous!

I used Village childcare for one month nearly 3 years ago (they had recently transitioned to new ownership and terminated their relationship with Legacy, I believe). It seemed to have potential and they said all the right things but we all hated it. We ended up losing a lot of money after paying for registration/one month that we didn't use. We gave it something like 8 solid tries but it just didn't work. Babe was around a year old and would always be sitting in the corner sucking a thumb and looking terrified when I went to get her. Meanwhile babies were screaming in cribs for more than 45 minutes at times and the older kids were running wild. In my dtr's room there was a large group of 18 monthish olds and a large group of baby babies separated by a flimsy particleboard wall. My dtr. was totally out of place in both sides of the room and terrified of the older kids. The staff were all nice enough but served what I considered to be junk food, did things like dump out my precious breastmilk, not wash hands enough ... My husband once dropped babe off and put her in the high chair to finish breakfast. I popped back in for a surprise visit more than 2 hours later and she was in the same high chair with the same bottle, just watching. I think she actually felt safest in the high chair so what could I say? I do have friends that have been happy there and I know others that promptly withdrew like we did. Haven't heard anything in the past couple of years. I also saw a couple of things that I thought warranted calls to parents/incident reports (furniture being pulled over on top of kids) ... and if that was happening with me present ... right? I didn't like their play area out on the main street. I had a hard time keeping track of belongings (they would get moved out of our cubby on our days off). I found it too easy to enter/exit the building without staff noticing me. Dawson Park sketches me out a little too, when I took my kiddo there after childcare there was a lot of garbage and a couple of times vomit next to the play structures. I think Village goes there a lot. So I absolutely don't recommend it if things haven't changed a lot. For the record, we moved to another daycare/school form Village and we've been there for almost 3 years so we aren't exceptionally picky. Yet, Village wasn't the worst I've seen either ... Sorry I couldn't have better news for you, it's tough!

I just want to post about Village. My son started with them in January 2008 at 3 months and we were there through August 2008 in the infant room. We were supposed to start at Grandmas Place in the Rose Quarter and when I went to observe there, it scared me Half to death. So I went looking for a new center and found Village. I have nothing but WONDERFUL things to say about them. We started part time 2 days a week then moved to 3. When I needed to go 4 days they did want me to go full time and we didn't need that much. I miss that my son isnt going anymore. The only reason we left is because a found a home care situation that was HALF the price. If we could afford to have him there still we would. The teachers in the infant room are wonderful they really love the babies. Which is what I wanted. I am shocked to read the review from sweetpeasmom because I never had any problems with them. My only concern was they wouldn't allow a sippy cup. They have a no sippy cup policy, and help the babies drink water from a cup. I was upset about this until I spoke with the director about it but she explained that babies learn and are very capable of drinking from cups. (By the way my 16 month old can now drink from a glass and most of the time dosnt spill (when he is seated of course)) I was not able to breast feed but about waisting breast milk I am not aware of that. They have a police that you bring 5 bottles a day. They do follow state rules about only keeping a bottle out for an hour so I suppose if it is not finished then yes it would be dumped. We just send 4 oz in the bottle and they were happy with us sending an extra container of formula so I am sure if you put less in the bottle and sent an extra container they could pour from that. I also never saw them ever take kids to the park across the street either. Again I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Village Child Care.

I just interviewed @ Childrens Corner. I love what I saw. Very clean and nice surroundings. This was an in home provider. Not advertised just word of mouth (593)807-6724I was given the reference from a co-worker. I visited with my 5 mo. Old. The provider was great with the kids. I was skeptical because of her prices "lower than others" I thought maybe I would get what I paid for? I was very surprised. Hours are
Flexible. We looked at many and hope she will have room in June!
Don't take our spot. But it's a great place.
