Wanted - Primary Care Referral
Shari's looking for a primary care physician on the Eastside:
My primary care physician is moving to the Westside, and I'm in the Beaumont/Alameda area. Does anyone have any recommendations for stellar primary care physicians in my area, or around the Hollywood district or Providence Hospital? I have a heart condition that sometimes requires antibiotics when I'm sick, so I need someone who is good about getting patients in the same day. Someone personable, who really cares, takes time with their patients. ("These are the 21 Things I Want in a Doctor...") And hopefully runs on time! (As a busy mom, I'm soooo over waiting forever for doctors who are always running behind.) Bonus points for a woman doctor, but I'm open. Once I have some names, I'll compare against my insurance's preferred provider list. Anyone?

I don't know if it will be a good fit for you, but I love my doctors at Portland Family Practice. They are located on NE 20th, about a block north of Sandy. They've handled my prenatal care, and my daughter and I both go there for primary care. I have seen a number of the doctors there, and I've been pleased each time, even if I couldn't get in to see my PCP (urgent appointment, etc.) Some of the doctors in the practice (so you can check your insurance panel) are: Debbie Murphy, Susie Bobenreith, Bonnie Reagan, Pete Reagan, Josh Reagan, Molly Moran-Yandle....I've found them all to be very personable, down-to-earth, and flexible with other treatment modalities (ie naturopathy, etc.) I have also worked with many of them in the hospital (I'm a hospital social worker), and am always impressed with their attentiveness. Obviously, I have nothing but good things to say!

I really like Laurie Donoghu, a family practice doc at the Cascadia Clinic at Providence. (503-215-6480). She's a mother, very warm, friendly, really takes the time to address all your concerns, and she called me at home once to answer a questions I'd left with the nurse. She only sees patients on TWTh though.

We like the doctors at the Family Medical Group at the corner of 33rd and Knott (503) 288-0083. They have Saturday morning hours, do all their labwork on site, and have been really kind to our son (and to us!). We have a great pediatrician at OHSU who only sees patients on Monday, and my stupid insurance doesn't cover anyone else at OHSU without it costing us a bundle. So if it's something unexpected, we go to the folks three blocks away.

I second the comment about Portland Family Practice - they have been great with me and my babyboy. They got us in the same day on the Friday before Memorial Day weekend, even, so I believe their urgent care appts might meet your needs.

I want to put in a third nomination for Portland Family Practice. We use them as our conventional care physicians - we also see a ND.
It has been easy for us to see a physician there whenever we needed urgent care. The doctors we have seen there thus far have been active listeners and respectful of our choices to compliment conventional medicine with natural treatments.
Our ND has been equally respectful of our use of conventional medicine. Having health professionals that are open to a complimentary approach is critical since each needs to be aware of any potential interactions between treatments.
Portland Family Practice has also been understanding of our choices regarding vaccinations. We delayed all vaccinations of Mila until she was a year old and have been selective about introducing vaccines rather than vaccinating Mila with everything that is available.
In addition to accessibility and general quality of care, it is important to me that I am informed as a patient, not judged. PFP has made the grade for me and my family in that regard.
Good luck!

If you want a conventional, allopathic doctor I can recommend Dr. Arun at the Providence Clinic on NE 47th. She's very personable, though I only go to her when I need something I can't get from a naturopath.
Another great person I can recommend is Max Tenscher at HealthMax on NW Lovejoy around 21st. He's a family nurse practioner and he sees my children and has also helped some friends and my brother when they needed to see someone immediately and/or get a referral to a specialist. He's also allopathic, but very open minded and comfortable with traditional remedies. He would prefer that we vax (we don't at all), but doesn't bug me about it.

I second the thumbs up for Dr. Arun as well. I think she is a good listener and has been very open to giving me referrals for my on going tennis elbow and carpal tunnel issues. I as well see a naturepath from time to time and she is supportive of that too. I haven't ever had to wait too long to see her and a few times I was able to slip in the same day for more pressing matters.

when I was a little girl, my mom took me to Broadway Medical Clinic, on 42nd just south of Sandy -- and that's the first place I looked when I moved back home. I, too, prefer a woman PCP but I ended up with Jon Baeur thanks to my pediatrician's recommendation, and I love him -- he's got a dry wit that my husband and I relate to and he's very thorough. he's also not terribly overbooked, and it's usually possible to get in for a same-day visit.

I can't say enough about Dr. Tom Harvey at Family Medical on NE 33rd. He is one of the kindest Dr's I have ever met. I do not feel like "cattle " in the wait room, I never feel rushed or like a "number" he is trying to be done with. He has walked me thru many a hard time and I have referred almost everyone I know in his direction. I almost always have women doc's but due to a fluk a few years back I ended up in his office and never left. He is what most doctors need to be... present for their patients.... you go Dr. Harvey.

Any suggestions for a primary care doctor on the west side? Thanks :)

I have seen Dr. Laura Donaghu as my primary care doctor for years and could not be happier. She's a caring, thoughtful doctor who listens well and doesn't make you feel rushed. I recently recommended her to my mother-in-law, who now raves about her as well.
I also love Dr. Lydia Villegas, who delivered my son. She is a family practice doctor who also does OB work. Very warm and has a wonderful bedside manner.
Dr. Donaghu and Villegas use to be in the same practice, but are now in different offices in the Providence Plaza building (across from the hospital). Either would be excellent choices as a primary care physician.
