PROGRESSIVE PORTLAND OR COMMONPLACE?
Since I've been in Portland, I've been called to jury duty twice. I was surprised to see though that this time I was exempt. There are only two "mandatory" circumstances in which the court allows you to be excused from service:
- If you are 70 years or older; or
- If you are a woman breastfeeding a child.

You were called too??? I just got my summons yesterday. Congrats for a "get out of jail free" card ;)

Awesome. Back in NY, they did have the exemption, but you had to come into the courthouse in person (with your nursed babe in tow) to file the actual exemption. Should I get a summons today, I think I could still fall under the exemption, right?

In SF, there was a similar nursing exemption, but it only applied to moms who were nursing infants under one year of age. I wish they would extend that to 2 years of age though.

This is funny, since I've had my first child, i've been called to jury duty almost yearly, and i've always been able to get out of it because of either breastfeeding or lately because of childcare issues-they count that as "nursing" too. I'm so glad. I hear it's really boring and lasts all day.

I have been called for Jury Duty several times, but have always been excused when my employer has written a letter requesting it. A few years ago I decided to go since my spouse is an attorney and I thought maybe I should go experience the whole judicial system for myself. Very, very boring... Fortunately, I was released after half a day and haven't been summoned again. I'm not currently breastfeeding, but I would probably say that I am to not have to endure that again. It was a long day.

Boring perhaps, but this is our judicial system with panel of peers at work! Jury duty is a glorious thing that I haven't been called for since I had to beg and plead to be excused when my 3 month old would have been recovering from surgery the week before. I wish I'd get called again.
Cherl, I'm a law student...is your spouse looking for a clerk? Just kidding...(not really)!

the one time i was called for jury duty and actually went (i was either a student or had just served or had just moved away from where i was called all other times), i actually got chosen to sit on a murder trial.
it was an addict who killed another addict for crack, and it was pretty obvious that he had done it, so the main thing to be decided was whether it was pre-meditated murder vs. manslaughter. it only lasted a week, thank goodness. i was not so happy when they showed us all the very gruesome crime scene photos and then said, ok, let's break for lunch! um, thanks, y'all.
it was emotionally draining at the end, but i was glad to be able to be a part of the process. can't say i wouldn't try harder to be excused next time though, especially now that i'm a mom with kiddos at home. i can't fathom trying to set up childcare for that length of time or longer.
oh, and in case you're wondering, "Dancer in the Dark" is not a good movie to see the night that you send someone away for life for Murder 1. thankfully, there was no death penalty option, but it was still perhaps not the best movie choice to make at the end of that week.
