Ivy Public Montessori Charter School: seeking thoughts

October 29, 2009

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with the new Montessori Charter School, The Ivy School?  I am interested in it but would like some information both positive and negative.  Thank you in advance for your help.  I like the Montessori approach but worry about it being such a new school.

Hello, Our son just got accepted into Ivy School for 3rd grade. He is currently at Glencoe Elementary. I would love to hear from Ivy parents how they feel about the school. Negative and Positive feedback.
Deciding schools seem to be so tricky; and I realize it depends on the family, the child and what our ideas of education and goals are. So your input would be very helpful.
I would like to also hear about what the after school program really is. I worry that they don't have much of an outdoor space, so where do they take the children to run around and play. Sports, art, theatre, music?

Montessori fan: I'm in the same situation you were in last year (accepted for Fall 2011, coming from a Montessori, questions about the new administrator and the staff). I'm wondering if you found out more than what was posted here and, if you did go to Ivy School, what your experience has been?

Oops, one more addition to that last post... Can any Ivy parents comment on the sense of community there at the school thus far? Thanks.

Hello, we were accepted into Ivy's lottery (1st grade) and are seriously considering enrolling this fall 2010, Ivy's second year. I'm wondering if any Ivy parents could share what they find to be the school's weak points, or areas to improve over time. I know there are typical "up and running" challenges, being a new school, but I guess I'm curious about big picture challenges. I know a new administrator was just hired, which is one curiosity I have. And, I'm wondering how parents feel about Ivy staff and administration in general, particularly those who have been in other Montessori environments. Our child just finished K at a private Montessori here in Portland. Thank you kindly!

Just a reminder that registration is still open for kindergarten at Ockley Green Arts and Technology School, a PPS K-8 in North Portland. To register, call the office:

We are parents of an Ockley Green kindergarten student and have been impressed with the kindergarten curriculum, responsive instructors, and friendly staff. We love the "extras" that Ockley Green offers, including a state-of-the-art electronic music lab with an amazing music teacher, but most impressive to us is the diverse, community-focused atmosphere and supportive PTO, all in a school that we can bike to. We are happy that North/Northeast Portland finally offers an arts-focused magnet program and are excited to grow with the school.

There is another open house on Monday, March 1st at 5:30pm.

Our child is here at the Ivy school and we are thrilled with it. The environment is all about the kids, the students are learning to be responsible for themselves in their learning and behaviors, teachers /staff are dedicated, there is a great community of families, decisions are made with intention and my child is enjoying school and learning and growing academically, socially and emotionally. Of course, there are differences and challenges with a small new school, but overall it has been worth every minute of it! Come check it out!

I think there's something weird going on with the comments section on urbanmamas lately - the oldest posts are appearing at the bottom and the newest posts at the top, which is not how it used to be or how it is on any other site I can think of.

It's easy to see how Kat could have read the bottom post and assumed it was the most recent post, even though the dates show that the bottom post is in fact the very first post. I'm very sorry you missed the open house - you might want to call the school and ask to schedule an observation. Contact information is listed at www.theivyschool.com.

Kat,
the open house was Feb 2nd. It was corrected in this post...I guess you did not see the correction. The correct date was also listed on the website..

Hey, there Ivy Parent. We went to Ivy school today for the open house you list above had and the school was locked and the parking lot was empty. Was it cancelled? We're disappointed!

The open house date listed above is not correct. The Ivy School - Montessori Public Charter School Open House is this evening - February 2nd from 5:30-7PM.

New Applications for lottery applicants are due by March 1st for the live lottery being held March 6th at 10:00 a.m. at The Ivy School.

More information can be found on the Ivy School web site:

The Ivy School open house is on February 2nd from 5:30-7:00 PM. They are located in the Community Learning Center at 4212 N.E. Prescott.

Hi I am a parent at Ivy. There is an open house on February 7th at 4:00-6:00 PM. There will be parents with children currently enrolled in the school available to answer your questions. You can also call for a tour.

My son loves it there. Sure, there are some bumps here and there, but overall I feel that the first year has been great.
