Faubion School

May 06, 2009

We are relocating to Portland and have been looking at homes in Concordia.  Just based on the OR school rating info, I am concerned about sending our daughter to the neighborhood school Faubion.  I know those ratings do not tell the whole story so I am hoping for some information, feedback about this school.  My daughter will be starting Kindergarten in 2010.  Does anyone have any information or comments about this school?  Are a majority of those living in the neighborhood sending their kids to this school? - thanks, Jen

We live on the border of the Concordia/Cully neighborhood. Our neighborhood school is technically Rigler, which my son went to 1st grade. We transfered for 2nd grade and the difference was dramatic. My son will be attending 4th grade and his loves Faubion. He has made several goods friends and has loved if not liked all his teachers. Plus, though the parents are very busy, they are very dedicated to the school and the kids. The PTA is very active and their S.U.N. program is great. The school has partnered with an organization called Growing Garden and I am part of a committee that is currently revitalizing the Garden area for class use and the current after school Garden Club. Sorry couldn't help the plug there. I'll be leading the club next year!
Hope that helps you and if you choose to come to Faubion I offer you a warm Welcome!

Our son will start Faubian in the fall. We are a block out of the Vernon neighborhood which is where I had wanted him to go. We visited Faubian and talked to a parent on the PTA. Each time I've walked up to the school, I have worried about our son going there but once inside I feel at home there because of the staff and the general feel of the inside. There are two Kindergarten teachers, male and female, and both were really nice and patient with the kids. Faubian is at the top of the list to get a new school so at some point soon a lot will change. The school is currently across the way from Concordia University and the students work at the school at times. We are going to try it for the year and then decide whether to move him or keep him there.

You can check the PPS website for info like % of neighborhood children attending Faubion. That info is found on the Faubion page at the bottom...I think you click on "enrollment information" or something like that. I know several teachers at Faubion and they send their children there. Good luck!

Nic, Thanks for the info. We really did like the area and I think I will take the time to visit the school. You mentioned you decided on private school. If you don't mind my asking, I was just wondering why you didn't opt for transfer into Faubion? Thanks for the info on the baby boom as well - I was curious about the number of families with young children in that neighborhood.

I forgot to mention that Concordia had a baby boom about 4 or 5 years ago, I know about 20 kids age 5 and under in that neighborhood. Hope you choose to move here!

Hi there. I live in Woodlawn, right next door to Concordia. I highly suggest touring Faubion. We are just starting school next fall so I went to several kinder roundups to get an idea of what I was looking for. I actually liked Faubion better than any other school I was in. Unfortunately, we aren't in the neighborhood. I would consider it in the future and I can't say that for any other school I went to. The principal gave us a lot of time and felt genuine. I've quickly learned that it almost all about the principal! Just in case you are wondering, we gave up on PPS and we are headed to private school (hopefully short term) until we figure out a good fit. I haven't heard any negatives about Faubion lately. This area really is nice (slowly up-and-coming) and I think Concordia is a great neighborhood. I would love to see all of our schools turned around so that we all send our kids there. There is a new Montessori charter school opening not far away (The Ivy School). Emerald Charter School hopes to come to N/NE if they get approval. Most exciting to me, there are a couple of parent groups trying to bring the model of Sunnyside Environmental School in SE to some schools in North and Northeast. That is my dream come true.
