Portland Circle of Friends and Family

Who We Are

Portland Circle of Friends and Family Preschool has been in existence as a cooperative preschool in Portland, Oregon since the fall of 1996. The preschool is operated by parents and continues to provide a valuable education service, at a low cost, to families within the community.

Our Philosophy

Circle of Friends offers an experiential hands-on learning environment, encouraging independence, positive social interactions and meaningful learning experiences.

We believe in helping children build high self-esteem in a non-competitive atmosphere, an atmosphere where personal challenges are valued as a natural happening from which we learn. We believe that helping children learn to accept what is beautifully unique about themselves, others and the world around them, is of primary importance.

Our Guidance Policy

Our guidance policy is based on a problem-solving technique, which empowers children to find creative solutions to the situations they encounter. One teacher and two parents work together each day to provide a warm and caring learning environment. A family's participation in their child's education is vital and enriches it far beyond that of the teacher's involvement alone.

How We Operate

The school term begins in September and continues through June.  Our Caterpillar class for ages 2-3 meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays and our Butterfly class for children ages 4-5 meets Monday, Wednesday & Friday. Children need not be potty-trained to enroll in either class.

The responsibility for the preschool’s educational program is a continuous cooperative effort between the teacher and the co-op members. No one within the school is paid except the professional teacher. The teacher and board members hold a fall orientation and assist parents/guardians in continuing their education. Because we are a cooperative, we practice shared ownership of the school and every member shares in the investment and ownership of the cooperative.

A Cooperative Preschool Defined

A cooperative preschool is a program that is operated by a group of parents who take an active interest in their children's first educational experience. Parents help the teacher in the classroom, are given opportunities for education, and are involved in decision making.

Because we are a cooperative preschool we rely heavily on our parents' involvement. We feel that the investment of a parent or guardian's time is far more important than that of their money. Therefore, we strive to keep our tuition low and family involvement high.

Benefits of a Cooperative Preschool for Parents/Guardians

  • Participation in their children's education away from home.
  • A better understanding of their children's individuality through observing them with other children their age.
  • A voice in school decisions and policy making
  • Education in child development and parenting skills at family meetings, PCPO conferences, and through publications.
  • Mutual understanding and moral support from other families with similar concerns, interests and problems.

Benefits of a Cooperative Preschool for Children

  • A teacher who works with their parents to encourage their sense of self-esteem and self-confidence.
  • An above average adult to child ratio.
  • Children of similar ages with whom to play and learn.
  • Respect for the differences and right of others.
  • A feeling of community and togetherness.
  • Field trips
  • A positive attitude toward future school attendance.

Classes

Our Caterpillar Class (2 and 3 year olds) meets on Tuesday and Thursday.
Our Butterfly Class (4 and 5 year olds) meets on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

WHAT TO ASK WHEN YOU VISIT A SCHOOL -- (AND WHAT YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO HELP YOUR CHILD SUCCEED IN SCHOOL)

Okay, so we all know the one question every urbanMama (or Papa) has when they're considering school:  will my child flourish here, having a totally wonderful experience and growing up to become the happiest and sweetest and most successful person ever?

But what questions can we really ask to make sure we find the right fit for each kid?

Here's a new Guide to Getting Connected to School that you can use at Kindergarten Round-Up, school tours, or any other school open house/event, to help you find out all the nitty gritty.

Download RSC_GuideToGettingConnected

Of course, choosing the school is just the first step -- there's a lot more to do get the little ones ready before they even start school.  So check out the Readiness Guide for some basics.

Note:  PPS created these, and they're translating them into other languages as well.  They also have ones specifically about middle school and high school.  If any urbanMamas want those, post a comment and I'll put them up too.

Kindergarten Early Entry Experiences?

We UrbanMamas have debated the pros/cons of early entry to kindergarten already. I'm looking for some actual stories from mamas about the early entry process. Portland Public Schools says that the process is still under review for this year. Let's assume nothing will change. I'd really like to know what the psychologist assessment was like. Did you child score well enough to qualify for early entry? Did your child mind the assessment? Does anyone know how many kids actually qualify through testing vs. how many don't make the cut? Do you have opinions on which psychologists are good for this assessment and who we should stay away from? Did you end up placing your child in kindergarten "early" and how has that been? Any regrets? Anybody out there wish that they had done early entry? Thanks in advance for stories!

Connections Academy charter school

Tuition-Free Public School for Grades K–12

The Oregon Connections Academy's website describes the program as a public school that students can attend from home.  The program combines:

  • the expertise and accountability of publicly funded education,
  • strong parental involvement,
  • and the flexibility of online classes.

http://www.connectionsacademy.com/state/home.asp?schoolCode=orca

We are considering this program for fall 2009.  Our current PPS public school is no longer in our neighborhood, and doesn't have the curriculum offerings available at other PPS schools anyway.  The Connections Academy offers all the core class, plus languages, art, music, and other electives.   Books and materials are provided by the program.  Does anyone have any experience with the school?

There's also an email group for any parents thinking of enrolling in a Connections Academy school program.  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/OregonConnectionsAcademy/

James John Elementary

I'm looking for information, experiences, thoughts, opinions on James John Elementary in St Johns. My daughter would enter 1st grade there in 2010 and we would love to hear from parents who have their kids enrolled there. Thanks!

Creative Children's Center- Beaverton

I just wanted to share some information about Creative Children's Center in Beaverton.  My son has been going there since he turned 2 and we love the school.  CCC is Oregon's largest parent-child cooperative preschool and Kindergarten.  They actually have programs from 14 months to 6 years of age.  I love being a part of my son's school experience and my husband actually parent helps once a month, so he gets to have his own special time with my son at school.  It's been fantastic seeing my son become an independent child.  He loves school and wants to go everyday!

They're holding an open house on Saturday, January 17th & Saturday, February 21st from 9:30am to 12:30pm.  There also visitation days available during the week on January 21, January 27, February 4, and February 10th.  Visitation hours are from 9:30 to 11:30am.

You can get more info on the school at www.creativechildrenscenter.com

The school is located at 2515 SW 185th Avenue, Beaverton, OR 97006

Feel free to contact the school with any questions at 503.591.0604

It's HERE: PPS Round-ups 2009

Well, our dear mamas and papas, that time of year is upon us.  It's time for round up season.  This year, unlike the past several years, PPS is not holding the PPS Celebrate! event, where all schools host a booth in one centralized location for one day so parents and students can have the opportunity to visit with students, teachers, and administrators from all PPS schools.  So, it's up to us to go forth and seek out the schools, if we are considering exploying the PPS school choice

When are kindergarten round-ups?  Well, consult the complete calendar here (*pdf) or find all the round-ups listed on the urbanMamas calendar.  Note that some of the schools (such as the focus option schools like language immersion programs) have mandatory meetings not listed on the "complete" calendar.  Those schools include: Buckman, Richmond, Winterhaven, Atkinson, Woodstock, Beach, Metropolitan Learning Center, Bridger, Creative Science School, and Hayhurts.  Call individual schools to find out specific round-up meeting dates and times.

Best of luck!
