Hi there, does anyone know about Atkinson - not in the immersion program? I'm researching from London for schools for September. Looks like a nice school but I know no one there. Thanks,Rebecca

hi,
i just visited atkinson elementary school yesterday, hoping to get my 3rd and 4th grade daughters in the immersion program. we are considering a move to portland from phila where they are in a full immersion program, and we had heard great things of atkinson.
we were very delighted w/what we saw. the school is incredibly diverse, warm, full of the children's art work throughout the building. we took a very quick tour, but on that tour we could see how innovative and resourceful they are with what they have and with applying for (and receiving) grants to supplement their educational and onsite resources.
beyond the spanish immersion program, they also teach other languages (vietnamese and mandarin, plus another that escapes me at the moment). and they have families from all of these backgrounds. many of the children and their families are ESL learners, and i believe that these families are also supported by the school w/ESL classes.
as for getting in, it seems to be a challenge. it may be easier for incoming kindergarteners, but for us there was a slot for our 4th grader, but not one for our 3rd grader. in fact, they had 2 other families waiting for a slot in the 3rd grade, and these 2 families have been waiting for a few years. because of this, it is not an option for us, but i think it's a really great option for families interested in an immersion program if diversity and creative curriculums are important to you.
