More info from the Llewellyn school website. Lots of events coming up!
Thank you to all the families who took time out of their busy schedules to come to Llewellyn on February 11 and learn more about their neighborhood school. We had more than 100 people attend, and lots of cute and clever kiddos!
If you attended and have more questions, feel free to email us at comments@LlewellynElementary.com. If you couldn't attend, please contact the school to set up a time to take a tour. You can call Jean Cheney in the school office at 503/916-6216.
A big thanks goes out to all the volunteers who made this event so special. We LOVE Kindergarten roundup and showing prospective families how wonderful our school is!
In addition, please consider stopping by on February 28 for Llewellyn Art Night and celebration of our fantastic Parent-Led Art Program. The show features student artwork. Your child will love to tell you how he or she created the art, the medium used, the technique, and the other projects they did in class.
On Friday, March 7 we hold our Llewellyn Talent Show, featuring the imaginative work of our K through 5'ers.

to be honest with you, we have not had a good experience at llewellyn. we deliberately moved into sellwood and paid higher prices for things so that my daughter could go to school here, and there have been MANY issues. i am not going to get into details and "trash" the school, so if you want more info, contact me or leave your contact info. it just boils down to inflexible attitudes on the part of teachers, and lack of supervision. i think it's a "good" school in that the kids will meet benchmarks, and if you have the time to spend considerable periods in your child's classroom, it could be good, but if you can't be there every day, it's frustrating. again, just one mama's opinion.

Before our family moved out of state my son attended kindergarten (05-06) and first grade (06-07) at Llewellyn Elementary. We were thrilled with Llewellyn and miss it dearly!! The teachers care about all the students, academically and emotionally. Upper grade teachers knew my son and even my preschool aged daughter. I always felt my son was well cared for, protected, inspired, and engaged in active learning while he was at Llewellyn.
The teachers and Principal Powell always made time immediately to talk to me about my child's progress or school concerns. All of his teachers provided me with extra ideas and resources to help my child over the summer. I know many teachers at Llewellyn who stayed late and arrived early, putting in many extra hours to provide their students with creative and exciting learning experiences. The teachers at Llewellyn love to teach and love to help spark the desire to learn in all the students.
Llewellyn fosters an outstanding sense of community. And it has an incredible army of volunteers, whom you will see in most if not all classrooms everyday!! The parents of Llewellyn students are an incredibly dedicated group who are interested in seeing all Llewellyn Students, not just there own, excel and have fun at school.
In the current political climate I think most schools across the country feel that they must "teach to the test" somewhat. I felt that Llewellyn Teachers were concerned about students making benchmarks, but it did not feel like the sole focus of the classroom experience. They taught them how to think not just how to take a test.
Our current school in NC has greater state funding and is one of the top performing schools in our district. But overall I have not felt the same level of dedication to the students that is evident in halls of Llewellyn. And while we have parent volunteers, it's nothing on par of Llewellyn.
I tell people here about Llewellyn, being able to walk to school with all our neighbors, the financial support from local businesses, parental involvement, dedicated, veteran teachers, a Principal with a TRUE open door, and they are very envious. And so am I! Children who grow up in West Moreland or Sellwood and attend Llewellyn are truly lucky to be part of such a Rockwellian Experience!
Feel free to email me with specific questions!

We have been extremely pleased with the Llewellyn experience for my three children. Given multiple moves for jobs, we have two other public schools from which we can compare. The school has a tremendous sense of community, which all the children benefit from, not just those with parents in the classroom. I have two diabetic children attending the school. I have been extremely impressed with how the school has managed this dire situation for my family. The teachers, administration and support staff have gone beyond what is required of them to ensure that I feel confident leaving my special needs children in their care. The teachers and principal have always been highly responsive to my concerns, be it academic or health. My non diabetic child has had a wonderful experience at Llewellyn, with extra attention given in the areas that she expresses interest. I find the teachers very approachable and experienced.
I had to get another mamas opinion out there.

After reading Mo's account of Llewellyn I need to respond. This is "just one Mama's account", but my experience over the past five years has been wonderful. While no school can be perfect, I can't imagine a closer-to-perfect experience. My first son is now in fourth grade, but I still get choked up thinking of his kindergarten teacher helping him transition away from me by picking him up and having him call his classmates to line up off the playground. Both of my boys are challenged by their teachers, who know what higher level of work they are capable of and have given them work at their ability level. As two of the responding Mamas noted, the teachers are there because they love to teach, and that echoes through the hallways. When I can't help in the classroom I am thrilled that other parents are giving the teachers (and our students) extra support. Llewellyn and the surrounding Sellwood/Westmoreland neighborhood have an amazing feeling of community. I am thrilled that my sons are growing up knowing a sense of place and knowing they are loved in their community. For those considering moving to Portland, this is the neighborhood, and school, to choose!
