Hi everyone. After a lot of consideration we enrolled our son in King School (our neighborhood school). We are pleasantly surprised at the amazing pre-k program, the staff and teachers. The kids are sweet and well-adjusted. My son is doing great and is reading because of this free all day program. I really believe in this school and think that choosing your neighborhood school is good for the community, the kids and the environment. Let me know if you have any questions. I'd love to help out.

Marlys - thanks so much for posting this! King is our neighborhood school. Unfortunately, the only things I've heard about King anecdotally have been negative. It's refreshing to read something positive. We'll definitely check out the Kindergarten round up later this month!

WC - I'm happy to help. Let me know if I help with any specific questions or concerns. Also, be sure to check out the website (listed above). I'm planning to attend the round up (to talk about our experience and answer questions, if needed), so hopefully I'll meet you there.

We are also in the King district, and I'm delighted to see an entry on this school as I know virtually nothing about it. Our daughter is 3.5, so won't go to Kindergarten until Fall of 2009, but I think I'll still try to sneak out of work to attend the round-up. Thanks so much for starting the discussion about King, Marlys.

We enrolled our son into King this year for kindergarten, with some reservations. We had heard mostly negative comments as well. Now we are very pleased with our son's progress. He is reading remarkably well and has made many friends. I am impressed with his teacher's willingness to take my ideas on developing a greater sense of community and acting on them. I will be attending the round-up to learn more about the Pre-K program, as I have a younger son who will most likely be attending King next year as well. I am pleased to see some interest in keeping our children at their neighborhood school. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Our daughter will start pre-K at King (our neighborhood school) in the fall. We have visited the school and pre-K classrooms a few times and are excited about the program. Both teachers seem really wonderful. I'm slightly apprehensive about her attending school full-day at age four, does anyone have comments about this? She currently attends preschool three mornings a week.

I am also very interested in starting a farm-to-school program at King. Are there others in the neighborhood who would like to help, or is anyone familiar with this process?

Hi Nicole,

I'm glad you've decided on King.

I shared your concern about full-time school. My son attended a full-day preschool (three days a week). So, for him it was only a few more hours a week than what he was used to. He really enjoyed pre-k (and is currently in the option summer extension - not sure if they'll offer this in 2009). It's an adjustment for all kids, I think, but the teachers make it so much fun, the kids don't seem to notice!

Karen (who also posted above) and I are on the PTA. Karen is the president (her second child will be in pre-k in the fall as well); I'm the VP. We'll begin official meetings again in September (check out www.king.pps.k12.or.us to find out more). We would love to hear more about your ideas about farm-to-school. I recently spoke to Corey Schreiber (sp?). He's managing this program for the state. I would like to know more if it's avaiable on a school-by-school basis.

Feel free to email me anytime. We'll also be making an appearance at the Good in the Neighborhood Festival next Saturday.

Thanks Marlys. I'd love to connect with you and Karen and discuss the farm-to-school program. I have a resource packet I can give you, but it sounds like Cory may be our best contact.

I'll look for you at Good in the Neighborhood. If I don't see you there, can I request your contact info from the school?

We are looking forward to the fall! Also, any news on what the school uniforms will be for next year?

Nicole -

Glad to hear you are sending your daughter to pre-K. My pre-K son is excited to join his big brother at King. I will be at the Good in the Neighborhood event to help set up. I can leave my contact info at the booth so you can ask for it. It would be great to connect. I have no idea what the farm-to school program is all about, but it sounds interesting.

As far as the school uniforms go, there is information on the King School website. Hopefully we can connect this summer!

Karen

Nicole,

I'm not sure if you connected with Karen on Saturday. Our painting activity went really well, however, it was so incredibly hot that we packed up early.

You can reach me at marlys at bentonic dot com.

Thanks!

Hi. Does any one know anything about Mrs. Wethington? She will be my child's first grade teacher at Rieke, but she taught at King before.

Hi everyone. For those interested, the King School PTA has begun an informal "meet and greet" prior to each PTA meeting. This time will allow parents and staff to get to know each other and for parents to become familiar with other school families.

We'll begin meeting at 5:30 for free dinner and conversation on the first Thursday of each month prior to the regularly scheduled PTA meeting (meetings begin at 6:00). Attendance at the PTA meeting is not required but encouraged!

The King School PTA meets monthly on the first Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in the school library. Translation services, childcare and food will be provided for free the 2008-2009 school year!!
