I live in the Roseway Neighborhood but my kids go to a school outside of our neighborhood. I've heard only negative things about Scott, but it seems more of a perception thing. I know for sure that there are other kids in my neighborhood whose parents think that that school leaves something to be desired. I've done my research and it seems like as far as the stats go, it's pretty average. The time has come where i'm at the point where I think we should be supporting our neighborhood school, rather than drive out of our way to the "other" mediocre school my kids attend.I guess that I'm really just wondering if any other parents out there have kids who go to Scott, and what they think about it. I'd like to hear!

I live 5 blocks from Scott. My daughter attends a school outside our neighborhood (but that decision was made before we moved into this house, and I opted to keep her at her existing school rather than move her).
We have some very close friends whose 2nd and 5th grade daughters go to Scott. The 5th grader for sure, and I think the second grader, are both TAG students. Both parents are able to be very involved (PTA, Site Council, classroom volunteers) at Scott. They admit the school is not perfect (whose is?), but due to jobs and transportation issues, are not able to move their kids out of neighborhood. They work very hard and are very commited to make this a good situation and good educational experience for both of their girls. So Scott has worked for their family. They have made the choice to love their school and to do everything they can to support it, and I applaud them for that.
By the way, I believe that Scott will add 7th grade next school year, and 8th the year after.
Now middle school looms for my daughter next year. For a variety of reasons that are very specific to my family, I am opting to seek a transfer away from Scott for my daughter.
I am a huge supporter of the neighborhood school concept and of public education. I wish that there wasn't so much disparity amongst the schools within PPS and that we could all sends our kids to the n'hood school without a second thought. I struggle with myself about not supporting my particular n'hood school, but I don't feel like I can because I feel like it will be at the expense of my daughter. The issues within that school (and many others in PPS, for that matter), make it not a good choice for her and for our family.
I don't want to beat up on Scott. I live in that n'hood and I want that school to be a success. I think the large majority of schools in Portland are facing similar (or worse) problems to those Scott faces.
I guess my point is: don't write it off. Look beyond the stats and the numbers.
What happens if my daughter doesn't get a transfer? We'll be at Scott next year, and we'll make the most of it.

Sheryl, thank you for that tidbit. That really helps in my decision-making.
