My son goes to Abernethy. We decided to send him there instead of the International School at the last minute. We have been very happy, it is a great school with dedicated teachers and very involved parents.

I have 2 questions: 1) impressions about the unique food program? 2) is the 'year-round' calendar that different? how do you like it?? Thanks!!! This is a great resource to learn from other parents...

the food program seems really neat, especially since it's tied into the garden they grow. There was food at the round-up that had been prepared by the chef (James I think his name is?) It was said that the food is sourced locally and prepared fresh. I felt it was a positive program, from what I could observe that one night. Regarding the year-round calendar... it seems they go from beginning of sept to end of June, approximately. There are weeks in between, other than the typical spring break, that are "off" (this week happens to be one of them). It may be difficult to correlate that with alternate care for full time working parents but it seems like a great opportunity for family vacations, where it might otherwise be difficult to take them because your child is in school that time of year. Hope that answers your questions :-)

I actually really like the year-round schedule. I work full-time, and find it easier to have a little shorter summer. I like the free weeks spread out over the year, it allows for family vacations at less busy times. Also, there are usually a couple of options for camps organized through the school, such as a kung fu camp at a local center. I also like the garden program. Although my son prefers to bring his own lunch, the menus are amazing, and I am hoping to convince him to try school lunches a little more as he gets more adventurous.

We just moved to Portland and we have a daughter who will be starting first grade at Abernethy in the fall. I was busily reading the urbanMamas from afar as we were planning our move, and now that we are here I am hoping to meet up with some other moms/dads and kids in the neighborhood. It would be great to get to know some new faces before September...which seems a long way off! We live around Clinton/Division and I'm also hoping to find out about good kid activities in the neighborhood. I also have a 3.5 year old. Drop a line...it would be nice to meet you. Mo Healy. My email is healy@lclark.edu

My son was accepted into Abernethy due to extraordinary circumstances, last week. I've now found out that the before and after care program art4life, might be full and not have room for him. Being a single parent, I'm curious what others in my situation might have done in the past. Suggestions? I'd hate to lose the opportunity of getting him into such a great school, because the school daycare option was full. Thank you in advance for any advice you may have. petedavi@ohsu.edu
