Our daughter will be entering kindergarten next fall and we are planning to send her to Peninsula School, our neighborhood public K-8.  We'd love to hear anything anyone has to say about Peninsula, especially the kindergarten teachers.

Peninsula 2010 Kindergarten Round-Up
Tuesday, February 23, 2010 from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m

Hi, I am a new parent to Peninsula. My son is in the third grade. I am a big advocate of this school. With the new principal, Carlos Galindo, the staff and students have risen their testing scores by nearly 20%! Carlos has instituted a whole-school curriculum based on writing. The staff have embraced this method and are continually attending workshops, etc. to improve their teaching. This is a hard-working group of professionals, committed to the Peninsula students (the average teacher stay is 13+ years!)

Carlos has also made a commitment to enrichment programs. All students, K-8, have art, technology, p.e., and music.

Something is happening at this school, and it is worth checking out. I encourage parents to commit to their neighborhood school, their neighborhood kids, and their neighborhood.

School Info Update:

Peninsula is no longer year-round, however, new to this year, it is a SUN School. What this means is that any child, 1st - 8th grade, can attend after-school classes with snacks at no extra cost and no income application.

Amy, if you're reading this... what's your own take on Peninsula now that you've been through the first year, and with the new principal? My son will be starting kindergarten there next month. I've been freaked out to discover, long after making the decision not to try to lottery into an alternate program, that (a) Peninsula is no longer on a year-round calendar and (b) there is no longer an on-site after-school daycare program. In fact, PPS has yet to identify a reasonable off-site alternative. (Ack! As I am a divorced parent commuting to and from Hillsboro every day, this is a BIG issue.) Any and all insights would be appreciated, and I would love to connect with another parent in the neighborhood. Please feel free to email me at tiadebella@msn.com.

The information for the Kindergarten Round-Up on the Peninsula website is wrong (as is the uM calender - I sent a correction). The correction time is:

Peninsula Roundup

As a Title I school, Peninsula has free full-day kindergarten for all students.

I'd hate for parents to show up a day late!

I don't know anything really about Peninsula, but was told by my son's transition coordinator that it has a very inclusive feeling and fairly small class sizes. I also like the year-round policy. That's all I got! ;)
