Support children’s literacy in your community and inspire a love of books and reading.  SMART Site Coordinators are needed in public elementary schools in Clackamas, Multnomah and Washington counties September 2009 through May 2010 for a time commitment of 1-8 hours per week.  Coordinators will receive in-depth training to train/support volunteer readers, work with school staff to schedule students and volunteers and provide program oversight during reading sessions.  Lead a team of committed volunteers and make a significant contribution to your local school.

Volunteer Op: Marketing Run for Congo Women

The organizing committee for RFCW in Portland is looking for someone with event promotion
experience to donate some time to our event.  Run for Congo Women started as a solo run, by Portland local Lisa Shannon, to sponsor women trying to rebuild their lives.  It is now is a national movement with runs across the country. 

• This is the deadliest war in the world since WW2.
• 5.4 million dead since 1998 and counting.
• Half of them children under five.
• The UN has declared DR Congo the worst place in the world to live as a woman.

We can help to change this.
 
Our goal is simple: To let Congolese women know that their lives matter, that their children matter. We are running for their lives.

Volunteer Op: Hands on Greater Portland, 11/22/08

I am a mom of 2 young kids (ages 6&3).  I am volunteering with Hands on Greater Portland (an awesome volunteer organization) to get the word out to families that might be interested in volunteering together on National Family Volunteer Day on 11/22/08.

This is a great opportunity for families to spend quality time together in a fun, positive and learning environment to teach our kids the importance of helping others.  And perfect timing right before Thanksgiving!  Hands On Greater Portland has created a day filled with service opportunities designed to encourage your family to get out and volunteer together. Be sure to pay extra attention to the all the volunteer opportunities happening at Hosford Middle School on November 22nd. There is something age-appropriate for everyone in the family and it’s all under one roof!  If you’d prefer to be outdoors, Zenger Farms is truly prepared for families with kids of all ages!

Portland seeks new members for city's Pedestrian Advisory Committee

The City of Portland is seeking new members for its Pedestrian Advisory Committee. Portland’s Pedestrian Advisory Committee is a standing citizen advisory committee active since the early 1990s. Its purpose is to advise the Mayor and City Council and City departments on all matters that encourage and enhance walking as a means of transportation, recreation, wellness, and environmental enhancement.

This is a public service announcement from the Nursing Mothers Counsel of Oregon (NMC).  NMC is a nonprofit organization that strives to improve health in our communities by advocating a women's right to breastfeed her child.  We are developing free breastfeeding classes and other services to provide to our communities.  We do not do any paid advertising.  Having our homes in the Portland Metro area leaves us a wealth of opportunity to reach people through our community newspapers and other publications.  We are currently advertising our fall training to recruit new volunteers. The Nursing Mothers Counsel of Oregon is actively seeking new volunteers. The American Cancer Society Needs Volunteers to Staff Cancer Resource Center

The American Cancer Society seeks dedicated volunteers to help staff the Pacific Oncology Cancer Resource Center in Beaverton, OR.

The Cancer Resource Center (CRC) is a partnership between the American Cancer Society and Pacific Oncology, and is entirely volunteer-run. As a CRC volunteer you will have the opportunity to make an enormous difference in the quality of life for cancer patients, caregivers, and their families. Volunteers provide clients with information and referrals for services such as free wig-fittings,overnight housing for those who travel for treatment, and supportive home-visits.

Anyone can volunteer, provided they are committed to improving quality of life for cancer patients and their families. Our volunteers range in age and experience from pre-medical students to stay at home parents and retirees. Working as a Cancer Resource Center volunteer is a challenging and richly rewarding experience and we welcome any inquiries at PacificOncologyCRC@gmail.com

Requirements:

- Excellent communication skills, especially active listening
- Ability to conduct work in professional and compassionate manner and maintain confidentiality
- Available for one shift per week during the hours of 9am-12:30pm or 12:30pm to 4pm Monday through Friday

- Ability to give a one year commitment

Two exchange students in Portland need homes- already here!

Hi Mamas and Papas,

As a Local Coordinator for the student exchange organization CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange, www.ciee.org) I am excited to say that we have over 15 high school exchange students placed in the greater Portland area for this coming school year!  Yay!  That's not why I'm writing this post, however.  I'm writing you all with a plea to consider hosting, or consider those you know who might be able to host, one of our two last boys who are currently in "Welcome Families" in our area.  Both boys are sweet, hard-working, and academically-inclined kids who are patiently waiting to be taken in for the year.  Could your family consider hosting one of them?

One of the boys is from Bangladesh and the other is from Thailand, and both are 16 years old.  Host families are volunteers who choose to host because they want to share their culture and home with a student from abroad.  The families are responsible for providing the student with a bed, a quiet place to study, and most meals.  The students bring their own spending money and are fully insured for medical and dental coverage through CIEE.  Both students and families are expected to bring love, enthusiasm and patience to the exchange experience!

As a fellow Portland mama and frequent reader of UrbanMamas, I know that there are plenty of generous, culturally sensitive and intelligent mamas that love this website.  That said, I'm hoping I might find some potential host families from among all the mamas out there who are looking to broaden their horizons, share invaluable lessons on cultural exchange with their own children, and have a lot of fun with a foreign exchange student headed to Portland in August. 

In addition to being a part-time working mom here in Portland, I am volunteering as a Local Coordinator for CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange), seeking out families for high schoolers from over 55 countries around the world.  The kids will be arriving in late August and staying for the school year (a limited number of students come for just one semester).  CIEE is a reputable non-profit, founded in 1947 (ciee.org).
