50% OFF CHILDBIRTH CLASSES!!

November 06, 2011

Hello mamas!  I'm excited to share that "Babylove Childbirth Classes" will be a featured daily deal on www.mobba.comwithin the next two weeks!  The deal is 50% off all childbirth workshops for the next year when purchased through Mobba.com.  That's $30 per person...a steal!  So, if you're not already a member of Mobba.com, now's the time, especially if you or someone you know is expecting (or planning to) any time within the next year.  My workshops are one-stop shopping when it comes to preparing for childbirth.  The workshops are a one time, 4-5 hour session on a weekend day, and includes lots of coupons and resources from all around the Portland area.  Not only are the workshops informative (I'm a labor and delivery nurse) they are personal, small group sessions so that you will come away feeling connected and empowered when your baby's birthday arrives.  Please check out my website for more information!  Best, Dena Holstrom www.babyloveworkshop.com, deenzrn@yahoo.com

America’s first synchronized nursing event in Portland

July 19, 2011

-BIG LATCH ON

-AUGUST 6TH 2011 AT 10:30AM

-VENUE- A. LINDAHL CREATIONS PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO

On Saturday 6th August 2011 at 10:30am thousands of nursing women and their babies across the United States will gather in their own communities to take part in the Big Latch On, America’s first synchronized nursing event in multiple locations. Our local Big Latch On will take place at A. Lindahl Creations Photography studio located in SE Portland.  Call Amanda, the photographer, to get directions 503-828-8773. Come join us for coffee, muffins and a wonderful opportunity to spend time with other mother's to have a lot of fun.  For the month of August A. Lindahl Creations will promote and support breastfeeding by offering coupons to mom’s with breastfeeding babies.

The first record for a single location was from Berkeley, CA USA in 2002 where 1,130 mothers breastfed simultaneously. The international record for one location is 3,738 mothers held by the Philippines in 2006.  Since then, there have been several coordinated international events and in October 2010, 9,826 nursing mothers were recorded at 325 sites in 16 countries.

The Big Latch On is originally from New Zealand.  It was introduced to Portland, Oregon in 2010 by Joanne Edwards as a celebration for World Breastfeeding Week. During the same week Annie Brown, a La Leche League Leader from Connecticut organized a simultaneous breastfeeding event in her home state. For World Breastfeeding Week 2011, they are working collaboratively and with the support of La Leche League USA to bring the event across the country.

World Breastfeeding Week, August 1-7, is celebrated in 120 countries and marks the signing of the WHO/UNICEF document Innocenti Declaration, which lists the benefits of breastfeeding, plus global and governmental goals.

Breastfeeding contributes to the normal growth and development of babies, and babies who are not breastfed are at increased risk of infant morbidity and mortality, adult obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and premenopausal breast cancer and ovarian cancer (both mom and baby.) The World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months of a baby's life to optimize these benefits, continuing to breastfeed for 2 years and as long thereafter as is mutually desired by mother and baby.

Dynamic Learning Services

Back to School Special

Is your child bright yet seems to struggle with school work?  Children with auditory/language processing disorders are often bright, but because they don’t process information they hear correctly, academics can be an area of struggle.  These children don’t exhibit a hearing loss; their brains just can’t always process what is heard correctly. Correctly understanding/processing information through the auditory channel is vital for academic success.

Quite a number of families began homeschooling with the belief that if their child just received individualized one-on-one assistance, their academic struggles would lessen.  Some found this wasn’t the case.  Any type of tutoring or individualized schoolwork is working above the area of the true difficulty for those that exhibit a learning disorder – putting the cart before the horse so to speak.  The root cause of learning issues must be addressed for a child to become an independent, happy and well-adjusted learner.

If your child exhibits difficulty with two or more of the areas listed below, he/she would be a good candidate for an auditory/language processing evaluation.

Reading

Spelling

Writing

Comprehension (reading and verbal)

Following directions

Test-taking

Articulation (speech)

Memory

Attention

Listening

Attending with background noise

Social skills

Excessive fatigue at the end of the school day

Dynamic Learning Services is offering a 15% discount for evaluations scheduled before October 15th,  2010. (This discount does not apply to Blue Cross patients as DLS are providers for Blue Cross and have a contract rate. Many medical insurance plans cover these services to some degree, but DLS does not do the billing for plans other than Blue Cross. Please call for CPT and ICD-9 codes to check if your insurance may cover these services.)

Janell Schicker, M.A., CCC, speech-language pathologist, has specialized in auditory/language processing disorders for most of her career.  She opened her first practice specializing in this area in 1997. The clinic phone number is 503-722-2851 and the website is www.DynamicLearningServices.net.  We look forward to helping your child.
