Help Reach and Strengthen Underserved Families in Lents!

March 21, 2013

Hey there, urban mamas!

Little Adventurers Day Home is looking to reopen its doors so that its services may be available to families in the Lents community and in the southeast. Our first focus are the underserved families in Lents (low-income/no-income, immigrant, people of color), and ensuring these families have the same access to quality child care and parental and family support as moderate to high income families do. Our cause is a great one but we need much support to take it on and begin serving families.

I hope you will catch the vision! Our needs are mostly financial at present, but we also need volunteers in the very near future to help us with the work of creating a safe, eco-friendly space for the children in our care. This includes hauling trash, rototilling, gardening, and laying concrete. Please contact me for more information. We hope to reopen our doors at the beginning of the school year. For a list of services or to learn the history of LADH, you may visit our website at littleadventpdx.org.

Kindermusik "Sign & Sing" -New Session begins in a week!

February 14, 2013

Are you looking for a fun weekly activity for you and your pre-verbal child to do together while also helping them to learn sign language? We are looking for more friends to join our Kindermusik "Sign & Sing" class offered by Tiny Talkers! Dads, Grandparents & Nannies are encouraged to bring their kids (moms too of course!).

Through songs, music, toys, simple instruments and loving playtime between you and your child, this class will show you many signs your child can use to communicate with you. Using research-proven methods shown to speed language development in hearing children, you'll see how sign language can ease frustration and enhance long-term learning abilities for your child.

A new session begins next Thursday!

Session A: Feb.21-March 21, 9:45-10:45 am

Where: Euphoria Studios: 1235 SE Division in Portland

Please pre-register!More info can be found here: http://tinytalkers.blogspot.com/

If you are interested in taking a 2 hour Baby Sign Language 101 Parent/Caregiver workshop, you can find that info here: http://tinytalkersportland.com

Child's tooth needing a silver cap

February 12, 2013

My 2 year old had a visible cavity on her back molar that a well-liked pediatric Portland dentist declined to treat with a filling until she was 3 years old. Me only having one child and no experience with this, didn't think this was unusual at the time. Fast forward 6 months (she is still not 3) and this tooth has quickly gotten to the point of awful looking and rotten despite good daily dental hygeine. Now the same dentist says she needs a "mini-root canal" and a silver cap placed with IV sedation. Besides the issues here that I was told to wait until she was 3 and I am now questioning this dentist's lack of proactivity, my daughter is a very particular child (especially when it comes to anything visual... ie clothing colors, stickers, jewelry, hair bands) and will FREAK OUT with a silver cap on her tooth.  I don't see this as something that she would easily adjust too.

Does anyone know of a good pediatric dentist that uses other alternatives besides silver caps in the Portland area? This dentist (who I won't name because she is very well liked, and I am sure she probably does good work), says I would have to go to Gresham to get something other than a silver cap and that all pediatric dentists in Portland will only use silver.

Cost is not an issue here. We have private dental insurance.

Richmond Neighborhood (SE) Clean-up and Plant Sale! JUNE 9th

April 16, 2012

Start cleaning your houses, basements, and garages of unwanted items and hard to recycle (non-curbside) recyclables so you can bring them to the annual Richmond Neighborhood Clean-up!

Did you know that the Richmond Cleanup is a win-win event for everyone involved? Not only do YOU get an affordable, centrally located location to get rid of unwanted items such as obsolete electronics or bulky block Styrofoam, but the Richmond Neighborhood also gets the opportunity to fundraise and support the neighborhood events you enjoy throughout the year!  Every car (or bike trailer!) that comes to the parking lot that day helps raise funds to support events such as Movies in the Park!

Don’t have any stuff to get rid of? Well you should still plan to drop by because back again this year are the ever-popular Plant Sale/Swap and U-Price it Sale!  The Plant Sale/Swap gets bigger each year and is a great opportunity to get affordable plants for your yard. The U-price is sale is an enormous neighborhood garage sale that overflows with usable household items that need a new home! Both are not to be missed!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED. This event is only possible thanks to the fabulous support of our neighbors who give their time on Clean-up day to help divert people and stuff to their appropriate locations. We are always looking for enthusiastic folks who want to help out so please get in touch so we can add you to our list! (We’ll provide tasty food and beverages for your time!)

The details:

When: June 9,  2012    9:00 am – 1:00 pm
