Seeking Sunday Parkways Superheroes - July 19

The July 19 Northeast Sunday Parkways event is just around the corner and once again we need volunteers.

Please send along a name(s) and contact information of someone (and/or yourself) that we can contact to help wave at thousands of happy walkers and bike riders and be an "Intersection Superhero" or a bike parking valet. Friends and family members are encouraged to volunteer together so forward this and have them join you in the fun. The 3 hour shifts still allow plenty of time to participate in the event (9am to 4pm).

Yoga Classes for Mamas!

Hey there mamas!

I wanted to invite you all to come join me and a great group of mamas for SANCTUARY: A Monthly Yoga Class for Mothers. Take refuge from the fabulous chaos of motherhood with this special evening of quiet reflection and juicy asana practice - just for moms. In this class, we will take a much-needed pause to relax, restore and reenergize our bodies and our minds within a supportive circle of fellow mothers. Together we will use our yoga to cultivate a personal practice of joy and grace to support us in our daily journey of motherhood.  This class is all about YOU.  Two full hours of quiet, candlelight practice as we take a moment to step away from our daily routines and refocus our hearts and minds.  This class is open to ALL MOMS - whether you are new on the job or have been at it for some time!
Sanctuary is offered every third Wednesday of the month at the Yoga Shala on North Williams from 6pm-8pm, for $15.   Next class is July 15th! Hope to see you there!

Kaiser offers free insurance for kids

Service District, is offering free health insurance to grade K-6 children attending Multnomah County public schools.  The insurance is free — there is no premium — but families must pay a small co-pay for office visits and prescriptions. Once enrolled, children are covered through age 19 if they remain in school.

To qualify, children must meet three main requirements:

• Attend school – Children must attend a public school in Multnomah County. Charter schools and publicly funded alternative programs also qualify.
• Grades K-6 – To enroll, children must be in grades K-6. Siblings can also be covered if they are age 3 or older (through 12th grade).
• Income – Families must earn 250 percent or less of the federal poverty level. For a family of four, this is about $4,600 per month, or $53,000 per year.

Kaiser offers the insurance as part of its community benefit program, which, among other goals, seeks to expand access to medical care for the uninsured. About 4,000 children already are covered through this no-premium plan; Kaiser and MESD want to double enrollment by the end of the year.

In addition to the Kaiser insurance, the Oregon Health Plan offers low-cost health insurance to children from families that earn up to 185 percent of the federal poverty level.

According to the latest census data, 107,000 Oregon children — about one in nine — lacked health insurance in 2005-07, the latest period for which data are available.

Family Fit Night/Noche de Bien Estar at Beach School

Hello,

I would like to let all of you know about a fun filled evening at Beach
School on April 30th.

The event is called Family Fit Night/Noche de Bienestar. It will run
from 5:30-7:30. The purpose of the event is to promote health and
wellness in the Beach Community. You do not have to be a Beach Parent to
attend. We are encouraging all from the neighborhood to come by and
check it out.

Here is a list of some of the things that will be going on:

1) Bike Safety Course - Kids will ride the through course and gets tips
on how to be safe.
2) Helmet fitting and $5.00 hemets for sale
3) Fitness circuit in the gym with things like 4-way tug war, jump rope
and hula hoops
4) Green Cleaning demo
5) Nutritionist from New Seasons

Since the event is the during the dinner hour food will be available for
sale.

Please come on over to Beach located 1 block South of Alberta and 1
block West of Interstate Ave.

child/parent coffee places?

I live in Vancouver but from time to time meet up with friends in Portland, mainly on the east side. Is there a good place to meet where the parents can have coffee and the kids can play? We have a great one in Vancouver called Cafe Sip n Play and there's one I've heard of in Beaverton but nothing in outer East County.

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

Portland Green Parenting is a drop site for Sauvie Island Organics CSA shares in SE Portland!

I am very excited to announce that Portland Green Parenting is now an official box drop site for Sauvie Island Organics -- an ultra local, sustainable farm located on Sauvie Island. By joining SIO CSA, you can expect to share in the season's bounty, support sustainable agriculture, reduce your food miles, and help your local farmers earn a living wage. Your weekly basket will be chock full of the freshest, local greens, root veggies, squashes, tomatoes and lots more (the farm grows over 40 varieties of veggies), and is large enough for appx a family of 4. The cost of one share is $875 + $45 fee for boxing and delivery of your bins to the drop site.

To sign up, simply fill out the form and mail in your deposit for the 2009 season. The PGP box drop site is located at SE 46th and Harrison, just south of Hawthorne.

Pick up will be on Tuesdays between 4-8 pm. As a value added service, PGP is also planning to put together certified organic fruit bins from Organically Grown Company that can be picked up on the same day along with your CSA share for an additional cost.

Community Grants available in North Portland neighborhoods

Have an idea to make your neighborhood greener, cleaner, safer or healthier? Need money to make it happen? I invite you to apply to Metro for a North Portland community enhancement grant today.
 
The deadline to submit an application is 5 p.m. Monday, May 11, 2009. Approximately $50,000 is available for projects that benefit the neighborhoods of Arbor Lodge, Cathedral Park, Kenton, Overlook, Portsmouth, St. Johns and University Park. Metro looks for initiatives that reflect thoughtful research, help strengthen the community, involve residents and deliver results. Funds are given to nonprofits, business people, schools and others who want to make a difference.

Along with its unique blend of needs, North Portland has generated some truly innovative solutions to help solve neighborhood problems – from litter removal by the Graffiti Nemesis of St. Johns, to the North Portland tool-lending library. Even if you haven't heard about this program, chances are your life in North Portland has been touched by it.
