Thanksgiving ROCKS! 3 Day Camp for Kids!

What?!  School is out for the entire week of Thanksgiving?

Yup!  But don't worry, Sound Roots School of Modern Music has got you covered!

Thanksgiving Rocks! is a three day adventure for your 1st through 7th grader in making a rock band . All skill levels welcome, including total beginners.

Young aspiring musicians will get to form a real band with students of their same skill level, come up with a name, design fliers, and learn to play a song with their band mates, in a supportive and fun environment. On the last day, parents can join camp for the Thanksgiving Rocks! Showcase at Mississippi Pizza.

Days and Times: Monday through Wednesday, November 24-26, 8:30 a.m to 5:30 p.m.

Cost: $95

Space is extremely limited-- so go to www.soundrootsmusic.com to sign up now!

Music is something that speaks to every one of us. We are all drawn to different types of music for many reasons: our culture, our family, our environment and our experiences. No matter if your kid wants to play electric guitar or the Hawaiian ukulele, we teach the fundamentals in a way that's individualized, fun and motivating.  Sound Roots' goal is to match students with teachers who most compliment their specific musical interests. By customizing  each student's experience, we can positively impact the way a student feels about music for the rest of their life.

Beyond camps, Sound Roots offers lessons and classes in a huge variety of instruments for all ages and skill levels.  Call 503 282 9999 with questions or to enroll or visit our website for more info. www.soundrootsmusic.com

Do you need any suits?

Hey Mamas! I heard from Leah that I somehow missed out on a little naked mama action. Totally sad. I admittedly have not been keeping as close an eye on the blog as usual. Anyway, hopefully I can make it to the next one. In the meantime, I have 4 beautiful suits that have been hanging on my racks for too long. I don't want to drive around trying to sell them, and I'm too lazy to try and sell them on ebay (photos, measurements, posting, etc., etc.).

So- I want to give them to someone! Is it you? They were not MY suits. I sell vintage/contemporary clothes at a local shop as a side project, so my basement has become a miniature warehouse of fun clothes. some things i can sell, some things i can't, and some things are really hard to just give to Goodwill if they don't sell (like these suits).

I will provide brief descriptions, and if you're interested, email me and i can give you more detail:

3 of the suits are skirt suits. These are all vintage suits in good-to-excellent condition. 2 of them are a light brown/tweed color, and one of them is a thick (gorgeous) navy blue wool suit. they are all seriously beautiful and well made. Each one has a very stylish cut. I think they'd fit a medium - probably about a size 6-10ish.

The 4th suit is a buttery ivory silk pantsuit from Bloomingdale's, with beaded lapels on the jacket and a beaded stripe down the outer leg of the pants - like a tuxedo stripe. it is beautiful! I would guess this one is from 1990-1994. The tag says it is a size 14 - though it looks a bit smaller than that. I think sizes were smaller in previous decades. this suit is also in good-to-excellent condition.

I would love to give these to someone who could use them!

A New, Local Source for Barefoot Books!

I am excited to spread the word with the urbanMama community that I have recently become an independent distributor for Barefoot Books, an award-winning children’s book publishing company dedicated to bringing high-quality art and story to children from all walks of life. Founded in 1993 by 2 working mothers, the company has been committed to nurturing a love of reading in a way that encourages children to explore their creativity and discover the diversity of the world’s many cultures and traditions.

Barefoot Books and their accompanying children’s products are not sold in large retail bookstores, but rather through small, independent retailers and their Stallholders—many of us are mamas who just love the books and want to share them with our communities. As a Stallholder, I have the opportunity to sell one or two books at a time to a neighbor, host a home party, or to organize a school-wide Book Fair Fundraiser. Please visit my website for more information, http://www.mybarefootbooks.com/LeahNoreng or send me an email LeahNoreng@mybarefootbooks.com to request a catalog, schedule a home party or to discuss your fundraising needs. Go Barefoot with me!

New Coffee Shop Opening in Kenton

A new family-friendly coffee shop will be opening in January 2009 in downtown Kenton on North Denver Avenue!  Posies Cafe will offer a vibrant community gathering space for individuals and families alike, offering a playroom for little ones, and ample space for everyone to spread out and relax with a nice warm cup of coffee (or our specialty hot chocolate - think chocolate with Allspice!)

We will begin the build-out of the shop in late November/early December, and are scheduled to open January 20, 2009.  Owned by Kenton resident (and fellow urbanMama), Jessie Burke, Posies hopes to provide a much needed space in Kenton for families to spend the long winter months.

Keep your eyes peeled for the changes that take place on Denver, from Posies in January, the the new library going in two doors down in June!

We look forward to meeting you all very soon!

*Many other Mamas have expressed interest in investing in the coffee shop. If you or someone you know is interested, please contact Jessie Burke at jessiebburke@gmail.com, or 971.404.9673.  Serious inquiries only, please (minimum investment amount is $10k).

Swim at PP&R Pools & win a free turkey!

Take a dip in a Portland pool this fall and enter to win a free Thanksgiving turkey at the 5 Portland Parks & Recreation’s five indoor pools. It’s all part of the 5th Annual Turkey Swim. Beginning Thursday, November 1 through Sunday, November 22, Portland’s public pools will be handing out an entry form for each paid admission to an Aquatics program, such as Lap Swim or Open Play Swim. The entries at each pool will be placed in a drawing to win a frozen turkey at that location.

On Monday, November 23, each of the five pools will draw a name and the five lucky winners will have a turkey on us.

Looking for a Wooden Kitchen Set

I am looking for a Wooden Children's kitchen set for my little Apple.  She's growing up and I would love for her to get into "cooking".  I personally don't need to buy a brand-new kitchen set for her but would rather find a used one that I can make our own.  Do you know of anyone who makes them or has one for sale?! Contact me please: earthfriendlymama {at} gmail {dot} com
