Looking for feedback on Maria's Place Preschool Montessori, NE Monroe St

January 03, 2012

We recently learned that Maria's place preschool, affiliated with Montessori of Alameda, has opened up a new location in our neighborhood (26 NE Morris Street, in Eliot neighborhood near Emanuel Hospital, across from Dawson Park.) It is an ideal location for us but at the same time we have heard negative feedback from friends about their Prescott location (located in the charter Ivy School elementary.)

Our friends enrolled their daughter in the preschool at Prescott during 2010 - they say there was significant teacher turnover in the few months she was there as well as general disorganization and lack of leadership. This led them to switch to a new Montessori preschool.

Comments would be appreciated if you have experience or knowledge on the quality of care at Maria's Place at either location. Or, I can be reached directly via email at tualatinhr@yahoo.com.

Thanks so much!

Jennifer

Summer camp 08 029
(Welcome!)

Apple Blossom Nursery School (ABNS) offers a beautiful and peaceful home setting in southeast Portland, Oregon. We balance our program with activities that support your growing child’s gross and fine motor development, with plenty of time to explore their ever-expanding world. Here at Apple Blossom Nursery School, your child is surrounded with environmentally stimulating and enriching activities balanced with nutritional foods and a sense of community.

FxCam_1285570040525

** Apple Blossom has expanded its hours this year!

M-F

8-5 for full day

 8-12:30 ½ day

 After care available until 5:30.

We offer full & part time care in inner SE & NE

ABNS is inspired by Waldorf education and specializes in working with children age two and a half to six years of age. Carrie Riley, director, founder and lead teacher of Apple Blossom Nursery School, is a state - and Waldorf - certified teacher with over 20 years experience in child care and 15 years as a lead teacher. She is also state registered. Carrie is mother to three grown children & 4 grandchildren.

Apple Blossom is an ECO certified school. All teachers take yearly continuing education courses to keep up to date on child development knowledge.  AB far exceeds the state mandated 15 hours per year. The average annual training is over 50 hours each!

Of course, all teachers have completed their child CPR & first aide, and a criminal history background check, reference checks & go through a trial 90 day trial period with AB before being hired.

April 08 196

Apple Blossom offers year-round school including aftercare Monday through Friday. We observe the same break schedule as Portland public schools; this includes holidays and inclement weather days.

During the school year we offer delicious homemade organic and vegetarian meals with a focus on nutrition. As the children arrive for school they are welcomed with warm herbal tea and a light breakfast of warm cereal & fruit.

We are state certified. Childcare options in Oregon include exempt family, registered family, certified family, or center care. There are over 5300 child care homes in Oregon. Of that number just 225 are certified homes. There are about 1020 centers. Certified homes are regulated like centers and have many of the same requirements. Every certified home goes through an annual certification process, unannounced visits and is inspected by the childcare division and the county health department. The certifier also observes the staff working with children. Staff in certified homes must have at least one full year of previous childcare experience or college training in early childhood education, child development, or in a related field.

When making your choice, know that going with a certified and licensed home, you are making a best choice there is! It’s a lot of work, but I feel it's worth it for you and your child’s well being.

Waldorf education is about teaching your child to learn through imitation and action. We recognize each child's unique spirit and strive to be worthy of their imitation. Simply put, learning through the head, heart & hands.

We invite you to come see the school and experience the magic!

Childswork Learning Center has a few openings left for summer camps and Fall classes

About Childswork

Childswork Learning Center is a non-profit early childhood education school located in Southeast Portland, Oregon. Since 1984, our school has served a diverse population of children and families, focusing on the development of the whole child with respect and compassion.

Childswork is a safe place for children to explore, take chances, make messes and learn through play. At Childswork we nurture wonder, we embrace joy, and we foster discovery.

DSC_0251

Mission & Philosophy

Mission Statement:

Childswork Learning Center is a community dedicated to excellence in developmentally appropriate early childhood education, where each child and family is respected in an environment that supports lifelong learners.

Our Philosophy:

Play is a child’s work. Play is a child’s response to life. It is the way children discover themselves and the world around them.

Our Core Values:

  • We appreciate childhood as a unique and valuable stage of human development.
  • We believe in aligning curriculum and practices with current child development research.
  • We value and support the bond between the child and family.
  • We recognize that children are best understood and supported in the context of family, culture, community and society.
  • We respect the dignity, worth and uniqueness of every individual.
  • We embrace diversity in children, families and colleagues.
  • We believe that children and adults achieve their full potential in the context of relationships that are based on trust and respect.
  • We recognize all members of the community as lifelong learners.
  • We engage in direct dialogue and problem solving in our community.

DSC_1119

Curriculum

Our curriculum is a natural extension of our community’s view of children. We view children as unique and competent learners, capable of investigation and problem solving. As such, we provide a play-based, developmentally appropriate environment in which we build an emergent and constructivist curriculum with our students.

In an emergent curriculum, investigation topics “emerge” from our students. We observe children in order to identify interests and select topics as a class. In supported small and large group settings, we explore concepts in a hands-on manner. Our investigations are shaped by the students’ decision making; children truly learn how to learn.

Our teachers use their strong knowledge of child development to support children’s learning and play. Teachers observe and structure the environment to encourage wonder, discovery and meaningful learning.

Childswork’s curriculum was also founded on the inspirational work of Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotsky and Reggio Emilia. Their influence is still alive and well in our classrooms today.

Childswork adheres to the Oregon Early Childhood Foundations (PDF), which are woven into our curriculum.

Classes

Parent-Child Twos Class

The Parent-Child Twos class is a gentle introduction to the routines of preschool with the reassurance of a parent close by. The two-hour class is structured to include playtime with parents and other children, snack time, story time, choice time and circle time. During part of the class parents gather in one area of the room to discuss parenting issues and challenges with a positive support group. Each class will have a Parent Coach to lead discussions with the adults and a Toddler Teacher to work with the children. There will be a maximum of 10 children/parents in the class. To register, please fill out the Parent-Child Registration form.

2.7 - 3 Year Old Classes (children who turn 3 by December 31st)

What a wonderful beginning to your child’s preschool experience! This class for our young learners has a ratio of 6:1 with two teachers. Our play-based philosophy is balanced with introducing children to some of the routines of a typical school day with circle time, choice time, snack time and outdoor time. This class supports the transition from parallel to beginning cooperative play. Self-help skills are taught as the children learn how to become more independent. This class is available MWF or TTH.

3 Year Old Classes

Our three year old class provides a fabulous opportunity for children to explore, investigate and create. The world is a big adventure at this age. Our teachers follow their student’s lead in developing a curriculum that embraces their needs and interests. This class also guides children with their social-emotional development and helps lay a foundation for success. This class has a ratio of 8:1 with two teachers. This class is available MWF or TTH

4-5 Year Old Classes

In this age group there is a greater ability for children to work together, to create a community and to cooperate. These skills are incorporated into our emergent curriculum as we work on projects together that meet their interests. At this age literacy and numeracy are also woven into the play-based curriculum as a means, not an ends to achieving their goals. Social-emotional development and conflict resolution skills are essential at this stage, especially as children are developing new skills for group interaction. This class has a ratio of 9:1 with two teachers. Classes are offered three, four or five days a week.

Mixed-age class

Mixed-age interaction among young children can offer a variety of developmental benefits to all participants. Blended-age groups can have unique benefits, facilitating and enriching children's development. Just as with our other groups, our emergent curriculum guides our daily exploration. Our mixed age classes are offered two, three, four and five days a week with a ratio of 8:1 or 9:1, depending on the mix of students, and two teachers.

LILLY BUBBLE
Thanks for looking!

Need a week of care this summer?

May 21, 2011

Hello! I’m a licensed elementary school teacher and I will be spending some of the summer as a counselor at Art Adventures, an awesome camp at OCAC. However, I’m not working there every week and so I’m looking for some work on my off-weeks! I have heard that putting together a summer’s worth of child care can be a challenge for many working parents, so if your kids are enrolled in camps but need a week off here and there, or if your regular nanny is going on vacation, we might be a match!

My experience with kids includes a year of substitute teaching, a year of being a kindergarten assistant, a summer of art camp counseling, a year of student-teaching, several years of regular nannying and occasional babysitting, planning special events at a children’s bookstore, and more. I’m pretty flexible and am happy doing lots of different things, depending on what the kids in my care want to do. We can take Trimet trips or stay closer to home. There are fountains to play in, museums to explore, trails to hike, flowers to smell, and special events to attend. I love doing art (all kinds, from making simple books, to sewing, to creating junk sculptures from stuff found at SCRAP), gardening, cooking, riding bikes, and being in nature. I’m also fine with kids wanting “down time” to read, play with siblings and friends, have a lemonade stand, and simply enjoy themselves, especially if they’re having a busy summer.

I would prefer to work with children ages 5 and up, who need care for a 4- or 5-day week. I would be fine with a group of up to 4 or 5 children, so if you want to arrange a share with your friends’ kids, that’s great. My rates are $12/hr for one or two kids, $14 for three, $16 for four, $18 for five. I’m comfortable caring for younger children (down to about 8 months) but my fees are a little higher and obviously I wouldn't be having as many kids. I can provide you with current, local references from local parents and colleagues. I live in the Piedmont neighborhood right near Peninsula Park, but can bike pretty much anywhere in N, NE, SE, or the close-in Westside. I have my Oregon teaching license, am enrolled in the Criminal History Registry, and am CPR certified. I have a driver’s license and am comfortable transporting kids in your car but not mine. Please contact me, Julie, at julie.rindone@gmail.com if you might be interested!

Weeks I have available:
June 13 - 17
June 27 - July 1
July 18 – 22
July 25 – 29
August 1 - 5
August 8 - 12
August 29 – Sept 2

Open House May 11 6-8PM

(Open House each second Wednesday of the month; check website for details)

Your family is warmly invited to our next Open House.  Our open houses provide an opportunity for prospective families to meet MCH staff and explore our environment.  Now enrolling ages 15 months to 5 years for Fall 2011 or sooner.

IMG_5948

We currently have openings for Toddlers (15 months - 36 months) and Primary children (3-6).

Montessori Children's House offers both  Toddler and Primary Montessori programs.  Located in Portland's newest neighborhood, the South Waterfront, we are still relatively 'undiscovered.'

We have mixed-age groups -- two Toddler Classes of up to eight children with two teachers, and our Primary classes with up to 22 children ranging from three years (or a bit younger) up through kindergarten age. In 2010-2011 we have one primary class and two toddler communities. As a new program, we are enrolling children now and do not yet have a “waiting list.” Remaining spaces are limited, however, especially in the toddler groups.

We also offer a Parent/Infant class for children under 15 months and not walking.

IMG_6307

'We toured a total of six schools before we found the right one for our daughter. We even enrolled her in another one prior to Montessori Children's House only to pull her out because we were disappointed in our experience there. I wish that we had discovered this school sooner! It would have saved us a lot of stress.'

IMG_5842

'The space itself is gorgeous, all new, beautiful learning areas, just what you would imagine a top notch Montessori school to look like...The location on South Waterfront is very easy to get to and from, parking is right in front of the main door and the teachers will even greet the kids at your car. We highly recommend Montessori Children’s House!'

Willow Tree Preschool

April 12, 2011

We are currently enrolling for summer camp and the 2011-2012 school year. Contact us for information.Audra close up 2011

The Willow Tree Preschool is an eclectic fusion of philosophies and approaches to education (including Waldorf and the schools of Reggio Emilia, Italy). Blending a respect for nature, with a focus on art, in a warm beautiful home environment created to meet the needs of the young child. Children are encouraged to move and learn at their own pace, inviting them to explore and build meaning through their experiences. At the Willow Tree children’s natural sense of awe and wonder about the world is nurtured through movement, song, and story, with an emphasis on art, nature and seasonal cycles.  In an atmosphere which encourages both active exploration as well as quite time to reflect, your child might choose to bake with the group, engage in dramatic play with a friend, drape herself in silk and dance around the room, paint, or build with a variety of materials…as wells as caring for our organic garden, the bunny, and two guinea pigs!Thomas cutting out flower 2011

Weekly visits from the yoga and art specialist promote further exploration, enhancing our curriculum.

The preschool hours are from 9 am to 1 pm for children 3 to 5 years of age.

Our days are woven together in a gentle tapestry of rhythm, movement and song, providing a secure and comforting environment that young children can thrive in. Each day, we enjoy free play, baking, seasonal crafts and handwork, painting, gardening, songs, movement, folk and fairy tales from diverse cultures and opportunities to participate in meaningful and practical life skills. We honor our connection with the natural world, and aim to be outdoors as much as possible each day.
