Hi - we are moving to the Hawthorne area and are looking for recommendations on daycare/pre-school for our 3 year old. Would love to find a place that offers Spanish if possible, but most important of course is to find quality care for our child. A place that is creative, stimulating, supportive...teaches social and environmental responsibility...any hidden gems in the area? Any info on the following:

Wild Lilac Preschool
New Day School

Child care exchange? I'll watch yours and you watch mine

Starting in August 2009, I will need child care two days per week. I was wondering if there is another family in Portland who will also need child care two days per week? My schedule is flexible, and I think I can choose any two days of the week to work. While I am working, you can watch my son, who will be about 7+ months old then, and yours. Then, on the days you are working, I can watch your child plus my son. Email me - nataliebennon at msn.com - if you are interested. Then we can figure out if it would work logistically, and if so, we can meet and see if we are a good fit in terms of personality. I am in SE portland, near 35th and Hawthorne.

Woodstock Community Playgroup

We are forming a playgroup for parents and children in the SE Woodstock neighborhood in Portland. We would love to meet families in our neighborhood and be able to walk to each others' houses to have playgroups. Jessica has a 3 year old son Owen and Mariko has a 2 1/2 year old son Aiden. Come play with us! We're on Facebook. Search for "Woodstock Community playgroup".

SE mama in search of childcare swap...anyone interested?

Hey there SE mamas...I am interested in exploring childcare swapping in our area.  I have an 18mo. old daughter and another on the way in Sept. and am in desperate need of a few hours off per week...sound like you too?  I think it would work best with at least three of us and each of us would take the kids for 1 morning per week (maybe for 3 hours?), that would give us each 2 mornings off.  Ideally doing crafts, going on walks and reading stories with maybe a snack in there somewhere?  This is just a rough idea from the other groups I've read about, so I'm open to other ideas too.  I live off Hawthorne and would prefer close-in SE...let me know if you're interested and we can get into specifics then! Thanks, Dena

Seeking FT in home child care/nanny share in SE

I am the mommy of a wonderful 9 month old baby boy and I am currently looking for child care in my neighborhood or close to. I am returning to work and I have been looking for child care for the past several months. I will be needing 5 days per week 7:30-3:30. I would prefer someone that provides organic food choices, uses child/earth friendly cleaners, doesn't mind using cloth diapers, has a small group, no tv time, provides lots of age appropriate activities, outside time, music and story time. I am looking for someone who is respectful to children in their interactions and appreciates the individual differences of each child. My son is an active bright child that is very curious about the world and very engaging. If you have an opening and are in the Woodstock, Moreland, Sellwood, Reed, Brooklyn, Near Grout or Lewis Elementary please e-mail me I would be interested in speaking with you. I will be returning to work May 1st.

Please e-mail me nicoleypoor@yahoo.com

Need a babysitter in May and June and possibly beyond

I'm looking for someone to provide very part-time childcare for a totally-brand-new baby in May and early June (though the time period could expand if I end up getting a job this summer). As I need the baby-free time for doing homework, the caregiver would be responsible just for holding and entertaining the baby in my apartment (or taking it for a walk in the neighborhood) while I'm there. Because I'll be close at hand, I don't need the caregiver to be an expert, experienced baby whisperer (though that's always nice) - just a nice person with patience and a sense of humor.

I'm very flexible about the logistics - I'm open to babysitting swapping, nannyshares, babysitting, whatever works! My main point of inflexibility is that I have no car, so you'd have to get yourself here (Sellwood). I think I'll need about 4-8 hours of care a week, preferably on weekdays, but the specific timeslots are flexible.

Please contact Sara at ostling32 at gmail.com if you're interested!

Small preschool has openings for 2 yo or older

We have a small preschool in the Creston-Kenilworth neighborhood (close to Woodstock as well) that has openings for children 2 years and older. Our daily schedule includes circle time, music, movement, stories, outside activities and craft projects. We also have monthly themes that incorporate age appropriate content and are geared to children’s natural interests. Currently, we are in a big summer unit -we just finished learning about bugs and rainbows, and are now on to plants. We cover many basic preschool skills in our daily routine--including things like counting, literacy (introductory reading and writing skills), and the all-important skill of learning to be part of a community.

I am a licensed elementary teacher (taught 6th grade math and science until starting a family) and have 2 children of my own. I also have varied experience working in preschool settings (montessori, reggio-emilia). I am a certified family child care center which means that I have been checked with the criminal history registry, I am CPR certified, I provide healthy meals and snacks, and I meet all safety and health regulations set by the state.

SAHM seeking PT/FT Nanny Position

Hello Mamas and Papas,
I am a SAHM, with a ten month old and am interested in finding a PT/FT Nanny position where I would be able to bring my daughter. I am flexible and willing to travel or switch off on locations (I live close-in SE). As a parent, I understand what kind of nurturing, loving and safe environment you want to create for your child and I would love to be able to find a family to connect with. My daughter and I like to spend our days going on outings to the park, having picnics (weather permitting), exploring the neighborhood, going to the library (book babies is great!), reading, dancing to music, singing songs, making yummy and nutritious food and playing age appropriate games. We love to laugh and play and believe having fun is an important part of our day together, as well as learning new things. I absolutely love creatively engaging with children and watching their minds at work. Everyday is so much fun, even the hard days! I’m a open-minded, reliable and positive person who leans more towards attachment parenting. I have great references and will gladly do a background check. I welcome the opportunity to get together to see if this is something that might be a good fit for you and your family. Please email Beth at bfportland@gmail.com with any questions. Thank you.

A Spanish Immersion Preschool

We just open our doors this month in Sellwood, and would love for you to come to one of our Open Houses.

About us: We are a dual immersion program for pre-school aged children (3yr-5yrs).  The teachers speak Spanish during the class time, using English when necessary. Teachers make learning Spanish fun while providing a structured and warm classroom environment. Uno, Dos, Tres Academy believes that creating an environment where children have fun while being exposed to the Spanish language paves the way for greater receptivity to learning the language in a more structured setting later in life.

While Uno, Dos, Tres Academy recognizes that language and literacy are core components of children's learning experience, we also believe that children grow and develop through a variety of ways. Throughout the day we provide children with a rich art program, dance, music, nature, literature, stories, and one-on-one interactions with peers and staff.

We are open Monday thru Friday from 7:00am -5:30pm and provide an enriching program for families who are interested in a Spanish immersion education for their young child. We offer small class sizes, which allow for many one-on-one interactions with peers and teachers. We have two large classrooms with one Lead Teacher in each class and a Teacher Assistant that assists in both of the classroom half of the time.

Schedules:

Part-Time Preschool 8:00am-12:00pm or 12:30pm-4:30pm (starting in Mid November)

Seeking nanny share / childcare for Fridays, SE Pdx

My great Friday morning nanny has a new job & won't be able to watch my baby anymore after December.  So, I'm looking for something new.  I'm wondering if this might be a good time to start a nanny share or a small childcare setting as my boy is going to be one at the end of November and no longer needs quite as much undivided attention as a little baby does.  Our current nanny has a little girl who is a year older than my baby and they enjoy each others company.  For a nanny share I think somewhere between 8 mo & 2 years would be ideal.  I hope to find something in the SE or possibly southern part of NE further out (close to 82nd).  Our current nanny lives in Montavilla and that works well for us.  Woodstalk or somewhere between the two would be good as well.  Hours needed are about 8:45 - 1:15 (depending on drive distance from our home) on Fridays.  A little flexibilty would be nice as I occasionally have a different work schedule, but it isn't necessary.

Thanks for any interest or information,
Claire

Seeking nannyshare/babysitting swap/babysitting or... something... for an infant, beginning in May

I'm looking for some kind of part-time childcare arrangement for at least May of 09. I'll be in school when my second kid is born (sometime around the end of April), and I will need part-time care on weekdays and/or weekends in the daytime, probably to the tune of 5-10 hours a week for May and early June, possibly beyond. I won't be wanting to be away from him/her for long, and I will need the time mostly to do homework, so I expect that the work will be in 2-hour shifts, usually with me close by, and will be pretty flexible in scheduling. I am open to any arrangement that works - babysitting swapping, regular old babysitting (a nice teenager with some tiny-baby experience would be fine), a nannyshare, whatever! I live in Sellwood. If you're interested in exploring some kind of option, please contact me at ostling32@gmail.com.
Thanks!

Throughout the day children have time for self-directed play, where they can explore in the art area, dramatic play area, gross motor/manipulatives area, science area, or do some one-on-one gardening with a teacher.  We go on weekly trips to the neighborhood park, and take walking field trips to explore the community around us. We have one full-time bilingual teacher in each class, and a part-time fluent Spanish speaking teacher assistant.

SE PDX Need all-day Pre-school spot at groovy center for almost 4 year old boy

Hello there,

My son just started pre-school last week and the school may not be a good fit for our family. We're looking for alternatives in case we decide to move on in the next week or so.

We had him in a parent-teacher co-op for the last 2 years, which we (and he) ADORED. We liked being involved with the school and getting to know his friends and teachers.  We're looking for a place that is small and integrates home life and school life. We'd like someplace that emphasizes relationship building between the children, creative play, offers plenty of time outdoors, instills open-mindedness and a broad world view and is full-day.

If you know of any open spots at great schools, please contact me.

Thank you!

Seeking preschool or kid swap, Woodstock area

Our family is relocating from Seattle to Woodstock area near Lewis Elementary, and we're seeking PT alternative preschool/care options -- small independent preschools, in-home care, and/or a childcare swap for our 4yo son. We did Montessori in Seattle, but are open to anything that will be fun, engaging, and include some outdoor/active time and possibly theater, circus, or Jazzercize instruction since the lad is a highly articulate, energetic Leo.

As a family, we're from the Pacific Northwest & Mexico. We like to run, bike, hike, dance, read, travel, and engage in various creative pursuits. I work from home as a writer/editor.

We welcome recommendations. Gracias!

Infant Care Needed in SE

We are currently pregnant with our very first baby and due December 1st. I will be needing infant care starting early March for 3-4 days/week. We live in Albany but I work in PDX near Mt. Tabor Park. We decided that it would be best to find a daycare in Portland because then I will be close throughout the day and to add 3 hours commute time onto the time that the child would be in daycare would be really tough. I currently work 7:15-4 but I'm sure that will shorten up a bit after baby is here.

We don't know anyone in the area and we're starting to get REALLY worried about our childcare options.

Thank you in advance for your help, I just don't know where to turn!! Please contact Lindsey at LAustin1020@gmail.com.

Seeking PT Babysitter for 2yo near Mt. Tabor

I am looking for someone to watch/play with my active 2 yo son for a couple of hours a week at our house. We are located in Mt. Tabor. I am a SAHM, and so am flexible about time, but would prefer a regular afternoon from about 2:30-4:30. Also one evening a month from 5:30-7:45 pm. I am looking for someone who will be in town for awhile, and may take on more responsibility as our family grows.
As for philosophy, we are pretty attachment focused, and don't really watch TV.
Please send me your resume/ experience/ cost per hour if you are interested at:

Temporary/September Childcare Available

My family is relocating in early October so my husband can attend graduate school. I have many years of experience with children from infants through pre-teens, including working in a daycare center for 6 years, working as a nanny, tons of babysitting, and most importantly, being a mama.
This Friday (9/5) is my last day at my job as a buyer and copywriter for a toy catalog. I will have a lot of time on my hands for the remainder of September, and am available for any temporary childcare needs either in my home (inner SE) or yours. I have a very sweet 4.5 year old daughter who loves other children. Great references available on request, rates negotiable and based on situation.

Babysitter Wanted :: SE Hawthorne

We are a SE Hawthorne family seeking a regular (2-3x/mo) babysitter for our sweet 9 month-old baby girl.  Our baby has a cheery temperament - curious and engaging.  She loves her cats, music, story books, strolling, crawling and babbling, and is just learning to stand.  If you stick to routine, she sleeps with minimal fussing.  We are usually home by 10 or 11pm.

Ideal sitter has infant experience and is available occasional afternoons as well as weekday and weekend nights.  Must be able to safely and comfortably lift and carry 25 pounds on a tight staircase.  Looking to build a long-term sitting relationship.  Reasonable pay, rounding up to the half hour.

Please contact Natasha to set up an introduction.  Reference requested :: hopenstan@gmail.com

Looking for a good match

We are loooking for child-care for our fifteen month old daughter for two full days a week from 7 (at earliest) to 3 or 4 pm. We'd love for her to be able to play with one or more other kids in a home, with activities, walks and two good naps as part of her day. We will provide her food. We can't afford a nanny alone, but would be interested in a nanny-share, care with another mom with kid(s) or other good situation. We could host at our house. We live in SE near 36th and Powell and would ideally find a situation between Powell and Hawthorne up to 39th, but are flexible in the SE at this point.
Thanks- please email me at megandanz@gmail.com

Inner SE pre-Preschool swap/playgroup

I am a mama of a currently 8 month old boy.  I need some time to write a dissertation and baby needs some playmates.  I've been looking around for childcare, but haven't found the ideal situation.  So, I've decided I need to describe my perfect situation and see if others are interested.

An ideal childcare/playgroup swap for me would look like:

  • 3 other families for 4 children total
  • Morning swap of 3.5 hours --- 9 to 12:30ish?
  • Each family takes one day Monday through Thursday
  • Children currently in the 7-24 month range
  • We all live nearby... I'm thinking South of I-84 to Powell, West of Mt Tabor to the River?
  • During our day on, we
    • provide a high quality (I'd prefer organic) mid morning snack and lunch - obviously milk for those still nursing would be provided by the babe's family
    • facilitate both structured (maybe singing and craft for 20 minutes each) and unstructured play time
    • get outside if it isn't raining!
  • Start the last week of August with parent/child play dates and move to the swap the first week of September

If you are a inner-SE/NE fairly typical PDX parent (gentle discipline, leans towards attachment parenting, tries to keep plastic toys and TV to a minimum, values diversity, etc but is still flexible) of a pre preschool age child who thinks this arrangement sounds appealing, please contact Nicole at irozn@pdx.edu

Seeking Childcare Wednesdays 3:30-6:30pm for 16m.o. boy

I am seeing care for my son on Wednesdays from 3:30-6:30pm while I work.

He is almost 17 months old, pretty easygoing (in the words of his other caregivers), happy, etc.

I am seeking:
1- a mama with a young child who wants to watch him for trade or reasonable pay
2- a nanny or babysitter share
3-a babysitter (high school? college student?) at our home for reasonable pay

Preferrably you'd be in SE; we are in outer SE near 205, and I work close-in Division, so anywhere between the 2 would be fine.

You wouldn't believe HOW LONG I've been seeking a sitter, or how DIFFICULT it has been. I am so willing to do a trade or pay the right person...we cannot afford $15/hr but $10 would be reasonable.

Thanks so much,
Christine
