Wildflowers Preschool is an Eco-healthy preschool in the Creston-Kenilworth neighborhood. The director and lead teacher, Heidi Donahue, has a Master's in Environmental Education and has created a curriculum that is a unique mix of Reggio Emilia, Montessori and Environmental Education. All three approaches to early childhood education give children some control over the direction of their learning, highlight the importance of using all senses to learn and honor the endless range of ways children have to express themselves. We provide an environment where children feel safe and part of a small community of families and teachers working together to meet the needs of each child. We offer daily circle times, literacy lessons, music and movement, art activities and lots of exploration of the natural world. We believe that children learn best when they are allowed to follow their natural curiosities about the world.

Best way to find infant care options in/near SE?

January 27, 2013

Hi UrbanMamas!

We moved to Portland recently for my husband's job, and there must be something in the water, because we're already expecting our first child - a baby boy - in June 2013!

As per instructions from almost everyone I know, we're already starting to look into infant care options for when I go back to work full time in September 2013.  We've gotten a few recommendations from my still measly social networks here but mainly we're relying on internet research which seems to be turning up the same few options: ChildRoots, Creative Minds, Grandma's Place, Belmont Academy, CCLC, the OHSU CCLC (we're looking in/near SE).  Or find a nanny.

I figure this can't be all that's out there or 90% of the babies in SE Portland wouldn't have a place to go.  My prenatal yoga instructor says many places just don't have websites.  Does anyone have ideas - specific places or lists of places?  A nanny or nanny share would also be an option.  I work from home and have a fairly flexible schedule, so I don't necessarily need a full-time, 9-6 deal.  On the other hand I've been told not to expect to get any work done if I'm home with the baby, even if there's a nanny there too.  And I do travel for work from time to time, and my husband has VERY long and VERY inflexible hours (he's a resident at OHSU).

Would love to hear from anyone with experience or ideas!  Places you or your friends have sent your babies, lists you've received, other networks you think I should tap into?  Mamas who work from home, any creative ways you've made it work?  Nanny+coworking space?  Would love to hear any and all input!

Thanks SO much,

Beth Stucky (bethstucky1@gmail.com) - that's a number 1 in my email address

Our teachers hold the image of each child as capable, competent, and curious and strive to meet each individual children's interests and passions with learning opportunities that inspire. It is the teacher's role to observe the children, support their learning and to gently guide them to accept challenges and solve problems. Wild Lilac teachers document the children's experiences to make their learning visible to the whole community.

Infant Space Available at The Earth Tortoise Montessori School

The Earth Tortoise Montessori School is an intimate community of 3 month
to 3 year old children, their families, and their teachers, nestled on a quiet tree
lined cul de sac.

We see these first three years as a time for free exploration and developing a sense of self.
Infants are just learning about their own bodies and developing the abilities they will need for all later learning. Toddlers are coming into their own. They are learning their place in the world, developing and refining their skills, and asserting their independence.

The classroom is the children's space - child-sized, beautiful, and completely accessible to their need for doing things on their own. It is a peaceful place that gives them the chance to choose
what they want to work on within a routine that is predictable and limits that help them feel secure. Learning develops the whole child - physically, cognitively, socially, emotionally, and spiritually. There are no "right" answers but only more exciting questions. And we love to share their enthusiasm with them in an attitude of acceptance, patience, and love.

Community is very important to us. We hope to create a place for families that feels like an extension of their home, a network of support that begins during pregnancy and extends out until your child is ready to move out into the larger world.

We currently have a child graduating in to a preschool program, making an
infant space available beginning in FEbruary. If you are interested in learning
more, please visit our website - www.theearthtortoiseschool.com. To schedule a tour please contact us at either (503) 257-4783 or at theearthtortoiseschool@gmail.com

Thank you and we look forward to hearing from your family!

Fun and Experienced Nanny Available Immediately!

Hi! My name is Meg, I am a 24-year-old graduate student at PSU working on a double masters in Education and Counseling. I have a BA in education, and many years experience working with children and youth of all ages! I have worked for several elementary schools, summer camps, and youth outreach programs. My past experiences include working as a substitute kindergarten and pre-school teacher, running a before-an-after school program, teaching environmental education, and being a youth advocate at domestic violence shelter.

In particular, I am passionate about the arts and outdoor education. I love music, dancing, exploring, crafting, cooking, playing outside, making stuff. I have worked as a professional house keeper and would be happy to take on some cleaning and cooking tasks as well. I have current CPR/First Aid certifications, a clean driving record, and a smooth running, kid-friendly mini van.

Nanny Share in Sellwood for Toddler-age; full or part-time.

January 20, 2013

We have a wonderful nanny for our 21 month old. She is kind, caring, interactive, playful, and professional--she even went to NW Nannies Institute so has professional training and her first aid and cpr certifications. She has been working with our family since Spring 2012 and we are extremely happy with her.  She has experience caring for multiples at both our home and elsewhere.

We are now looking to find a family to "nanny share" with--ideally we'll find a family with a child close in age to 20 months so the kids can become playmates and learn from one another.

The schedule: Currently our nanny works Tuesday through Friday from 8:45 AM to 4:45 PM. We are flexible on hours though and if you need care on Monday, the nanny is availale but it just wouldn't be a nanny share day (since we have Grandparents doing care that day). We are open to full time or part-time nanny share.

The location:  Our preference is to have the nanny share happen at our home because that is what works best for our schedules and the fact that we are a one-car family, but we would be open to discussing other options if someone lived close to us.  We are located on SE 15th a few blocks south of Tacoma--walkable to Sellwood Park, the Community Center, the library, New Seasons and it is a great place for the kids to have some activities outside of the house regularly without having to drive somewhere.

We have a separate room in the house where your child can sleep in a pack and play or in a crib which we could provide if it is regularly at our house.

When nanny share is at our house, we are happy to provide 100% vegan, healthy, mostly organic meals for both kiddos.

The rate: $8/hour per family.  (We do also pay taxes on top of this which we can help you with)

About us: We have our sweet 21 month old girl, 3 rescue chickens and a 60 lb dog named Meg who mostly keeps to herself. We make efforts to be green--from eating a vegan diet to using cloth diapers and natural products. My husband is a teacher and I work in renewable energy.

Please get in touch if you are interested in discussing more! amandamortlock [@] gmail.com.

Seeking a part-time nanny in SE Portland

We are a working couple seeking a nanny who is available to help care for our 2 children in our home in SE Portland. We need someone who is available regularly on Mondays from 2-6, and occasionally in the evenings. I work from home, as a freelance editor and writer, and my husband is the office manager of a CPA firm downtown.

Our son, Teddy, is nearly 2 years old. He consistently naps from 1:30-3:30, sometimes later. Our daughter, Elliot, is 2.5 months old and does not yet have a consistent nap schedule, though she does sleep for some portion of the afternoon. We need someone who would be comfortable watching both kids if they are both awake, and who is willing to help out with light housework (ironing, dishes, vacuuming and dusting, some dinner prep, etc) if they are both sleeping. The ideal candidate will have experience with both infants and toddlers, and knowledge (or the willingness to learn) baby sign language. We are looking for someone who can start by mid-February or sooner, and commit to the position through mid-July.

We live within walking distance of the Mt. Scott Community Center, the Woodstock Elementary playground, and the Woodstock public library.

If you are interested, please send us an email detailing your experience and your hourly rate. A background check and at least 3 professional references will be required.

~Terrific Part Time/ Full Time Nanny Open at the end of the Month!~

January 06, 2013

GREAT NANNY, JUST FOR YOU!

Hi Everyone,

My name is Jillian M. Currently I am looking for a new position as a Nanny. I was involved in a Nanny-share for almost the duration of the year but as the contract term ended and the children turned 1 they were placed in Montessori. I am comfortable doing either another nanny-share, or working for one family. I am comfortable working with up to 3 infants, depending on their ages, 4 toddlers, or 5 children in total but this would really depend on the overall dynamic of the situation. I am also comfortable doing care in your home, or mine. Ideally the position would provide at least 36 hours a week, but this is also flexable as I explore my options.

Here's a little information about me. I have an immense amount of experience with children. I started my babysitting career at 12 years old, after I received my Oregon babysitters training, and CPR certification. Since then, I have had experience in taking care of about 25 different children, usually two or more at a time (five max), in in-home settings. My experience with children ranges from newborns to 13-year-olds. About half of my clientele has been parents of children diagnosed with Autism. I have also worked and volunteered with a school that caters to meeting the needs of children diagnosed with Autism . My tasks at the school included building a summer reading program for some of the more advanced students. I directed the students during "signing times" videos (videos that teach the children sign language). I did teacher aide duties in the classrooms working extensively with the pre-schoolers, and in the occupational therapy room. In addition to this experience, I was also a camp counselor in high-school at Camp Howard outdoor school for 2 seasons.

I love to do activities with children. I am not the type of care provider who will sit children in front of the TV and do my own thing. Just to be clear, I rather children have no screen time during my time with them. I prefer for children to have fun. If the parent permits, I like to take them on outings to the park, or maybe a day to the zoo, children's museum, library, or swimming pool depending on the child's interest. I love doing art projects, or fun cooking activities, playing board games, and will even happily partake in dress up or tea parties. As well as making sure the children enjoy the time we spend together, I firmly believe in education. I like to come up with developmentally appropriate activities that stimulate the intellectual growth of each child. For school aged children I come in great handy for help with homework.

I am a student and am working towards a degree in early childhood education. I take courses through the local community college's online program, when I transfer next year I will continue primarily with online education. I am familiar with many learning/parenting styles includingMontessori, Waldorf, Attachment Parenting, and Positive Redirection. What I am unfamiliar with, I am willing to learn. My time spent with your children is based on your needs, their needs, and your parenting beliefs. I am very flexiable when it comes to this as I understand it is your child and I enjoy learning new styles.

I have a license, car insurance, and a car for transporting needs. In addition, I know basic Spanish, and am furthering my skills incase you are interested in your child learning a second language.

I would ideally like a position that offers at least a 1 year contract.

Best,
Jillian
