Scuola Italiana Preschool - A Language and Learning Jewel in the Pearl District

June 05, 2014

DSCN4276

Portland, OREGON May 30, 2014 – Portland’s premier Italian language preschool is accepting registration for the 2014 – 15 school year. The Reggio Emilia, Italian immersion program is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am – 12:30 pm.  Children ages 3 to 5 years may enroll from one to five days per week.  The preschool is located at 1542 NW 14th Ave in the Zimmerman Community Center, in the Pearl District.

Scuola Italiana Preschool is taught using one of the most respected approaches to education worldwide, the Reggio Emilia approach.  This approach fosters children’s intellectual development using the principles of respect, responsibility and community through exploration and discovery in a supportive and enriching environment. The program is led by Lara Carnovali, an experienced, native Italian teacher who came to Scuola Italiana from Milan, Italy.  To create the very best learning environment, Scuola Italiana preschool maintains a 4:1 student teacher ratio and limits class size to no more than 12 students.  This allows the teacher to focus closely on students and maximize learning.  Time is running out to visit the preschool before it closes for the summer on June 12th.  To arrange a visit, meet the teacher, and learn more about this excellent program, please email info@scuola.us or call 971-270-0471.

I am a 39yo stay-at-home mom with a degree in Social Work, specializing in child welfare.  I approach children as being fully their own people deserving of respect and sincere listening, while understanding that they need lots of reassurance, love, and support as they navigate the often bewildering and frustrating experiences of growing up.  Have passed extensive background checks.  Will have adorable niece (high school student) working as my assistant all summer.  Children are crazy about her.

Day Care Spots Available for Toddlers (Inner SE Portland)

March 04, 2014

I have a small (3-4) group of wonderful toddlers I care for in my SE Portland home (near Division and 30th).  I have an immediate opening for Tuesdays, and full-time spots opening in the summer.  Hours are 8am - 5pm, with earlier and later hours available by prior arrangement.  We eat healthy and delicious organic meals, enjoy daily time in the fresh air, and laugh a lot.  Daily activities include painting and drawing, several story times with books and songs, dance parties with balloons and scarves, bubble chasing, exploring music, walks to Piccolo Park, and free play.  I keep the group small so that I can give plenty of individual attention, encouragement, and reassurance they still so need at this age.

I have a degree in Social Work, am trained in infant and child first aid and CPR, and am a mature mother of a sweet, goofy 2-year old (who is part of our group).  I am heavily influenced by Montessori philosophy, by which I mean that I focus on independence in children and create a child-based, beautiful and calm environment.  My rate is $70/day, which includes all meals and snacks.  Please email with any questions.  I look forward to chatting with you!  Mercy Pozgay (mercyblue@gmail.com)

Copy of pumpkin patch 2012 007

The Willow Tree Preschool is an eclectic fusion of philosophies and approaches to education (including Waldorf and the schools of Reggio Emilia, Italy) developed with over 20 years of experience in early childhood education. Blending a respect for nature, with a focus on art, in a warm beautiful home environment created to meet the needs of the young child. Energetic Reggio nanny seeking 35+hr/wk with new family

IMG_0513

Hello families!
I am a 22-year-old nanny who, after an office stint, is looking to get back to my childcare roots. I am looking to start in the next few weeks, and would prefer to give my current place of employment 2 weeks notice. In January I plan on returning to school part-time so I am looking for a family with a bit of flexibility in the future, but would give at least a month's notice before needing to change my work schedule.

Prior to my current job, I worked with toddlers and preschool-age children for three years in a Reggio center. I have also worked with infants in a Montessori school. Most recently I was a nanny for a year and a half for toddler twins. I tend to integrate several educational philosophies but we can, of course, work together on this. I am experienced with cloth diapers, potty training, infant sign language, and conversational Spanish. I also have some special needs experience. I'm more than happy to help clean up around the house and I love to cook. I have all certifications and paperwork in order (RCAAN, cpr/first-aid, criminal history registry, food handler's).

Growing Together Playschool, A Socially Conscious, Reggio-inspired preschool in Foster/Powell SE Portland

September 04, 2013

A new small family-run preschool is opening in the Foster Powell neighborhood of SE Portland this fall. The Growing Together Playschool has a few openings for 18 month-3.5 year olds and 3-6 year-olds.
The Growing Together Playschool offers small classes in a friendly home setting. The younger class, Wonder Days (for 18 months -3.5 yrs) is designed to offer a gentle “first school” experience for the children. Skills such as taking turns, expressing one's needs and desires, sharing ideas, playing together, being respectful to oneself, others and things, asking questions, investigating the hows and whys of the world, and extending natural interests through books, projects and experiences are modeled and encouraged.
The older class, Adventure Team (for 3-6 yr olds) is a continuation of the class I have been offering for the past few years. In Adventure Team, the students are encouraged to see their world as a place that they can influence and explore. They are taught to solve problems independently and in group meetings. We explore the world through weekly field trips to community, wilderness and kid-focused spots and bring our ideas and interests back for project work, group and collaborative play and general fun.
At the Growing Together Playschool children are guided to make their own choices and taught how to get the things they need and want while remaining respectful and safe to others. Respect is seen as a foundational tool used to guide behavior to ensure safety and fun for all. The older children are encouraged to participate in rule-making and determining consequences (if consequences are deemed necessary). Punishment is not used and consequences are only used when necessary, useful and respectful.
Growing Together Playschool offers children time for in-depth investigation into their world and the tools and toys with which to explore. Reggio-inspired emergent curriculum means that children can bring their own interests to class and have those interests encouraged and extended upon.
Of course, we also offer a daily rhythm that is easy going and predictable, and toys and activities to promote intellectual, physical, social, and emotional growth. The teacher, Liz, has a Master's Degree in Early Childhood teaching and is a mother of two young children.

Rivendell Preschool on Peninsula Park, North Portland

July 31, 2013

IMG_9635Rivendell Preschool is a registered family child-care center. I offer a full day program, from 8:30 -5:30, to provide a dynamic learning experience for children of parents who want to be able to go to their jobs knowing that their children are thriving in a safe, nurturing, loving and natural environment. Every day, I post an entry summarizing the day’s activities: the books we read, the songs we sang, the art we created, the highlights of our outings, the antics of the rabbit…. Parents don’t have to guess and wonder about what their children are doing all day.

IMG_3764Respect and Kindness are the two fundamental values I seek to model and encourage regarding others.

Creativity and Integrity are the two fundamental values I seek to model and encourage regarding oneself

Rivendell is an old house with hardwood floors. It has a big light living room where most of the action happens, an art studio in the basement, a garden in the back, and a wonderful park right across the street. Almost all of the toys are made from natural materials, the food is organic, and there is no TV.

Escuela Viva
Community School
Offering a Dual Language Learning Environment
1111 SE Pine St. Portland, OR

Escuela Viva, has 5 openings available in our Preschool classrooms for the 2013-2014 school year.  Escuela Viva was developed with two main goals in mind.  The first is to provide an enriching environment that supports the spiritual, academic and humanistic needs of our children. The second is to support the development of both English and Spanish language skills.

The Learning Process:  Children, at Escuela Viva, are viewed as competent active learners (constructivism). Teachers are but one means by which the children learn. Learning occurs in collaboration between the classroom environment, the adult teachers, parents and the children (Reggio Emilia).

Escuela Viva, founded in 2004, is OPQ (Oregon Program of Quality) certified and is leading the movement to professionalize early childhood education.  Each day our team brings compassion and enthusiasm to the classroom.

Please read more about our educational philosophies and program at Escuela-Viva.com.  You can complete a waitlist application on the 'Enrollment' page of our website, and direct any questions towards info@escuela-viva.com.
