Woodhaven School, A Waldorf-Inspired Preschool in SW Portland

April 23, 2014

Screen shot 2014-04-23 at 11.09.55 AMWoodhaven’s Waldorf-inspired and nature-based preschool program is dedicated to fostering a lifelong love of learning in our children. The school strives to nurture the whole child. Children learn through active exploration and interaction with adults, peers and the natural environment. The curriculum emphasizes child choice rather than highly structured, teacher- directed lessons and is inspired by the elements of Waldorf education. Our program emphasizes oral story telling, natural toys, outdoor learning, organic food, and a soothing environment. A good portion of our daily school routine is spent learning and exploring nature’s wonders in our outdoor classroom. Located in in SW Portland’s Garden Home neighborhood, Woodhaven is a secular and independent school. Also, Woodhaven is a media-free school, where children are encouraged to exercise their own imaginations and creativity through art, music, dramatic play and hands-on exploration of simple toys and natural objects. As a cooperative, Woodhaven emphasizes family involvement. The preschool is operated by professional teachers and parents who choose to actively participate in their children’s education. At Woodhaven, the parents and teachers work together to instill a sense of wonder and genuine enthusiasm for learning in our children.

  WT January 2014 041

The Willow Tree Preschool is an eclectic program influenced by the progressive early childhood programs of Reggio Emilia, Italy developed with over 20 years of experience in early childhood education. Blending a respect for nature, with a focus on art, in a warm beautiful home environment created to meet the needs of the young child. Play is at the core of everything we do, it is through playful exploration that real learning happens, creative thinking evolves, problem solving develops, and true connection and meaning is made.

At the Willow Tree children’s natural sense of awe and wonder about the world is nurtured through movement, song, and story, supporting the children’s social, emotional, physical, creative and intellectual development.

The preschool hours are from 9 am to 1 pm for children 3 to 5 years of age.

Summer nanny for two young school-age kids in inner NE PDX

April 02, 2014

We are seeking a nanny for 4-5 days/week (full-time) care at our home this summer.

Our daughter is 4 1/2 and will be home starting the week of June 16.  Our son is 7 1/2 and will be home starting the week of July 21.  They are fun loving kids who love to get out and about.  We are looking for someone who would be available for the whole summer and would be able to take them on little adventures, sometimes dropping one of them at summer camp in the mornings and picking them up in the afternoons.  We are pretty flexible on hours, but need someone who can transport the kids.  We're located close to PCC's Cascade campus.

Please contact us by email: clhurtt [at] aol.com.  Thanks!

Energetic Reggio nanny seeking 35+hr/wk with new family

Hello families!
I am a 22-year-old nanny who, after an office stint, is looking to get back to my childcare roots. I am looking to start in the next few weeks, and would prefer to give my current place of employment 2 weeks notice. In January I plan on returning to school part-time so I am looking for a family with a bit of flexibility in the future, but would give at least a month's notice before needing to change my work schedule.

Prior to my current job, I worked with toddlers and preschool-age children for three years in a Reggio center. I have also worked with infants in a Montessori school. Most recently I was a nanny for a year and a half for toddler twins. I tend to integrate several educational philosophies but we can, of course, work together on this. I am experienced with cloth diapers, potty training, infant sign language, and conversational Spanish. I also have some special needs experience. I'm more than happy to help clean up around the house and I love to cook. I have all certifications and paperwork in order (RCAAN, cpr/first-aid, criminal history registry, food handler's).

Excellent Nanny Available

September 06, 2013

I'm in search of a great family or families to work for. Ideally I'd like between 25-30 hours a week. I live in SE and am looking for a job in NE, SE, or possibly close-in NW Portland.

I have over 15 years experience with children in daycares, after school programs, art based summer camps, and as an art teacher at a local Montessori school. I’ve worked with children (from infancy to age 12) from a variety of cultural backgrounds and family situations. I also have experience with twins and some experience with special needs children. I’m a non-smoker and have no pet allergies.

Email me at [email protected] and I can provide you my resume and several references. I look forward to speaking with you and seeing if I might be the right match for your family.

Searching for Long-Term Nanny/Household Helper - approx. 30 hours / week

We are busy, self-employed parents looking for the perfect fit to help raise our kiddos and keep our household running smoothly. Our daughter was born at the end of June and we are now looking to transition our care system to streamline our daily routine and maximize our family time.

The basic logistics -

Currently our 3-year-old son attends a fantastic Montessori school all day and our daughter comes to work with us. We would like to transition our son to half-days and have our "household helper" pick him up, and care for him as well as our daughter throughout the afternoon, until we come home (by 5:30 p.m.). This may mean transporting both kids at once - preferably in your car, but are flexible with providing a vehicle for the right candidate and situation. We think the position will be approximately 30 hours per week, over four days. We would like to have our daughter in the mornings; but may need you to take over if we have pressing deadlines or meetings. The exact schedule is somewhat flexible, but the majority of hours fall during the typical work day. We work in inner Southeast Portland and live in inner Northeast / bordering North Portland.

Growing Together Playschool, A Socially Conscious, Reggio-inspired preschool in Foster/Powell SE Portland

September 04, 2013

A new small family-run preschool is opening in the Foster Powell neighborhood of SE Portland this fall. The Growing Together Playschool has a few openings for 18 month-3.5 year olds and 3-6 year-olds.
The Growing Together Playschool offers small classes in a friendly home setting. The younger class, Wonder Days (for 18 months -3.5 yrs) is designed to offer a gentle “first school” experience for the children. Skills such as taking turns, expressing one's needs and desires, sharing ideas, playing together, being respectful to oneself, others and things, asking questions, investigating the hows and whys of the world, and extending natural interests through books, projects and experiences are modeled and encouraged.
The older class, Adventure Team (for 3-6 yr olds) is a continuation of the class I have been offering for the past few years. In Adventure Team, the students are encouraged to see their world as a place that they can influence and explore. They are taught to solve problems independently and in group meetings. We explore the world through weekly field trips to community, wilderness and kid-focused spots and bring our ideas and interests back for project work, group and collaborative play and general fun.
At the Growing Together Playschool children are guided to make their own choices and taught how to get the things they need and want while remaining respectful and safe to others. Respect is seen as a foundational tool used to guide behavior to ensure safety and fun for all. The older children are encouraged to participate in rule-making and determining consequences (if consequences are deemed necessary). Punishment is not used and consequences are only used when necessary, useful and respectful.
Growing Together Playschool offers children time for in-depth investigation into their world and the tools and toys with which to explore. Reggio-inspired emergent curriculum means that children can bring their own interests to class and have those interests encouraged and extended upon.
Of course, we also offer a daily rhythm that is easy going and predictable, and toys and activities to promote intellectual, physical, social, and emotional growth. The teacher, Liz, has a Master's Degree in Early Childhood teaching and is a mother of two young children.
Please see more details at: www.growingtogetherplayschool.com

Looking for a nanny to work M-F afternoons, in a share situation; close-in SE Portland

August 17, 2013

Two families looking for an experienced, reliable, and energetic part-time nanny for our easy-going (but active!) preschoolers, a boy and a girl, both 4 years old. Weekdays from 12-5, except 12-3:30 on Tuesdays. Parents work at home and are in need of uninterrupted work time, so we’re looking for someone to pick up the kids from their school in the Woodstock neighborhood (with our family car), give them snacks, and plan outings & activities for them. They love art projects, music, books, and exploring parks. They’re best buddies and love to play together, although resolving the occasional conflict will be necessary, so being able to effectively communicate with verbal and strong-minded preschoolers is important. Certification in child CPR and first-aid required, as well as excellent references and a clean driving record. Fluency in a second language and experience caring for at least two children is a plus. If this sounds like a good fit, please don’t hesitate to contact us at [email protected]

Our Wonderful Nanny Is Looking for a New Family

July 31, 2013

Our wonderful nanny is looking for a new family.  Our youngest son, Nicholas, was accepted into his older brother’s preschool from the wait list. This is great news, but also a mixed blessing, because we love our nanny and don’t want to let her go!  So, we are on a mission to find a new perfect family for her.

Our nanny has been with us for the past 9 months, taking care of our two sons Aiden and Nicholas.  When she started, Aiden was 2-1/2 and Nicholas was 9 months.  She quickly discovered many ways to be useful to our family, and has only grown more helpful as the months pass.

I simply cannot recommend our nanny more highly.  She is just about perfect, as far as I am concerned.   Reliable, on time, and a calm and steady presence around the house.  She is a natural with kids, and mine hit it off with her right away.  She has extensive childcare experience and a background in arts education, and always comes up with healthy, educational, and fun things to do with the kids.

If you would like any additional information, please feel free to contact us and we will be glad to answer any questions – [email protected]. We will be sure to forward any information to her.  She is flexible with her schedule and ready to start in September.  She just moved to SE and would prefer a job in SE or close-in NE, but would consider other areas as well.  We highly recommend her, and know that her new family will be very happy with her.

Thank you!

Carrie Lopez

Hummingbird School

Alberta Arts Area Morning Preschool

Hummingbird School is a space where children are encouraged to explore, interact, create, imagine and express themselves.  The program is designed to allow students to discover the world through play in an environment that is unhurried, loving and secure.  Our approach is child-led rather than teacher-directed.  Through free play and open ended art activities, children challenge themselves to work on the skills they need to learn and develop.  A focus on play and creativity also allows preschoolers many opportunities to interact with peers and practice emerging skills such as empathy, flexibility, problem solving and negotiating.
