Our son just got in off the wait list for Montessori of Alameda to start in January (he'll be 16 months). I really like their program and am impressed with the school but I'm worried that 16 months is too early, especially since he has to go a minimum of 4 days per week. That seems like an awful lot to me. I currently work 3 full days/week but will have to change my schedule to work 4 days (9-2:30 instead of 9-5:30). Our son is a very social kid and enjoys being around other children (at the library, in swim class, play dates, etc.) so I think he will thrive with the interaction with other children I just don't know if I should be doing this at his age. If we pass up our spot then most likely he won't be offered another one until July (he'll almost be 2 yrs). We currently have an at home nanny 3 days/week.
Does anyone have any experience in sending their child either to Montessori or other daycare at this age - for 4 or 5 days/week? Advice on how to make the transition easier? Or if we should pass up the space and wait until he's a bit older? Currently he cries every time I leave him with the nanny at our house and I worry that it will be even harder in a new place (without the comfort of home). The crying stops a few minutes after we leave and then he is fine the rest of the day but the goodbye is very hard.

I want to RAVE about about son's school, A Beautiful Day Montessori in NE Portland. My son was the second child to enroll in this brand new school last year. Unfortunately, enrollment has not increased and I wonder if moms and dads just don't know about this wonderful opportunity that exists for the exemplary education and experience available for their preschoolers (3-6yrs).
Mariah, the owner and AMI guide, has beautifully transformed the main floor of her home into the most inspiring classroom I've ever stepped into. It also has huge windows that look out over the backyard where my son enjoys digging up potatoes and picking strawberries while learning botanical names for several of the plants and trees.
I strongly encourage you do check this Montessori preschool out. It does not matter if you plan on continuing a Montessori education after preschool. This stage of brain development is such a foundation for the rest of their lives. I feel that my son will greatly benefit for the years to come from his time at A Beautiful Day Montessori with Mariah. He has leaned so much as his natural curiosity of the word has been inspired daily. He tells me, " I think Mariah knows everything, even though she is a human." I told him he should tell her that :)
My hope is to help like-minded parents on the east side discover this brand new little treasure. Once word-of-mouth gets out, I think this school will touch the lives of many Portland families. If you want a school that will help you instill the love of learning in your child, then this could be a great place for your child to spend some quality time in their younger years.
If you would like more information please call Mariah at 503-358-7335 or www.abeautifuldaymontessori.com
I hope you will !!!

Harmony Montessori School, which serves all of east Portland, offers a joyful learning environment and a flexible, holistic approach to early education based on the method developed by Dr. Maria Montessori. Within the carefully prepared environments of Harmony's classrooms, we encourage each child to grow and learn according to his or her unique timetable.

Help. I am moving from Chicago to Portland next month, and am in need of full time daycare/preschool for my almost 4 year old son. He is currently in a full time Montessori program that accepts children from 6 weeks to 6 years old and they are open from 7am to 6:30pm (my son is typically there from about 8am to 4:30pm). Does anyone have any recommendations--while I am very happy with the Montessori program I am open to other good centers. I appreciate any help anyone can offer. Thanks.

Myself and a couple other mammas with infants (ages 8 months to 12 months) are interested in putting together a co-op Montessori close-in East side. Does anyone have any experience with putting together a co-op or a resource for "how to's"? Is there a good resource that you may know if for used Montessori materials, furniture, etc?
I would love any feedback. kiradennison@yahoo.com

I am having a difficult time locating a Montessori school that offers two or three half days. Is anyone attending a school they love on a part-time basis?
Sunnyside Mennonite does offer a three day program. I am curious if anyone with experience can tell me how religious instruction is handled. Is it a lesson during the day?
Thank you for your help.

Part of what makes the urbanMamas community so fruitful is how you all share information you find, so other families can share the wealth of information! Thank you Kerlin for the following:
I just wanted to spread the word on a wonderful little school I just found and am going to sign Adin up for this fall. Its called Indigo Children Montessori. The teacher is wonderful and warm. It is in a home with beautiful mosaics, a cat, hermit crabs, and fish. Best of all (for me anyway) it is super affordable. $325 for five mornings a week. She is having her last open house this Saturday from 10 til 12. It is in the NE near Sandy and 63rd. Jesse Krill at 503-206-8109 or

SE mamas, FYI on a new childcare option in the SE. Per another Michelle's recommendation:
I have been perusing your site for the past few months desperately searching for the right pre-school for my 19 month old daughter. I just wanted to let any one who is interested know that I have found a wonderful new Montessori pre-school in SE/ Hawthorne neighborhood The teacher is fantastic and she just opened and still has space available.
