Best way to find infant care options in/near SE?
January 27, 2013
Hi UrbanMamas!
We moved to Portland recently for my husband's job, and there must be something in the water, because we're already expecting our first child - a baby boy - in June 2013!
As per instructions from almost everyone I know, we're already starting to look into infant care options for when I go back to work full time in September 2013. We've gotten a few recommendations from my still measly social networks here but mainly we're relying on internet research which seems to be turning up the same few options: ChildRoots, Creative Minds, Grandma's Place, Belmont Academy, CCLC, the OHSU CCLC (we're looking in/near SE). Or find a nanny.
I figure this can't be all that's out there or 90% of the babies in SE Portland wouldn't have a place to go. My prenatal yoga instructor says many places just don't have websites. Does anyone have ideas - specific places or lists of places? A nanny or nanny share would also be an option. I work from home and have a fairly flexible schedule, so I don't necessarily need a full-time, 9-6 deal. On the other hand I've been told not to expect to get any work done if I'm home with the baby, even if there's a nanny there too. And I do travel for work from time to time, and my husband has VERY long and VERY inflexible hours (he's a resident at OHSU).
Would love to hear from anyone with experience or ideas! Places you or your friends have sent your babies, lists you've received, other networks you think I should tap into? Mamas who work from home, any creative ways you've made it work? Nanny+coworking space? Would love to hear any and all input!
Thanks SO much,
Beth Stucky (bethstucky1@gmail.com) - that's a number 1 in my email address

Infant Space Available at The Earth Tortoise Montessori School
January 24, 2013
The Earth Tortoise Montessori School is an intimate community of 3 month
to 3 year old children, their families, and their teachers, nestled on a quiet tree
lined cul de sac.
We see these first three years as a time for free exploration and developing a sense of self.
Infants are just learning about their own bodies and developing the abilities they will need for all later learning. Toddlers are coming into their own. They are learning their place in the world, developing and refining their skills, and asserting their independence.
The classroom is the children's space - child-sized, beautiful, and completely accessible to their need for doing things on their own. It is a peaceful place that gives them the chance to choose
what they want to work on within a routine that is predictable and limits that help them feel secure. Learning develops the whole child - physically, cognitively, socially, emotionally, and spiritually. There are no "right" answers but only more exciting questions. And we love to share their enthusiasm with them in an attitude of acceptance, patience, and love.
Community is very important to us. We hope to create a place for families that feels like an extension of their home, a network of support that begins during pregnancy and extends out until your child is ready to move out into the larger world.
We currently have a child graduating in to a preschool program, making an
infant space available beginning in FEbruary. If you are interested in learning
more, please visit our website - www.theearthtortoiseschool.com. To schedule a tour please contact us at either (503) 257-4783 or at theearthtortoiseschool@gmail.com
Thank you and we look forward to hearing from your family!

~Terrific Part Time/ Full Time Nanny Open at the end of the Month!~
January 06, 2013
GREAT NANNY, JUST FOR YOU!
Hi Everyone,
My name is Jillian M. Currently I am looking for a new position as a Nanny. I was involved in a Nanny-share for almost the duration of the year but as the contract term ended and the children turned 1 they were placed in Montessori. I am comfortable doing either another nanny-share, or working for one family. I am comfortable working with up to 3 infants, depending on their ages, 4 toddlers, or 5 children in total but this would really depend on the overall dynamic of the situation. I am also comfortable doing care in your home, or mine. Ideally the position would provide at least 36 hours a week, but this is also flexable as I explore my options.
Here's a little information about me. I have an immense amount of experience with children. I started my babysitting career at 12 years old, after I received my Oregon babysitters training, and CPR certification. Since then, I have had experience in taking care of about 25 different children, usually two or more at a time (five max), in in-home settings. My experience with children ranges from newborns to 13-year-olds. About half of my clientele has been parents of children diagnosed with Autism. I have also worked and volunteered with a school that caters to meeting the needs of children diagnosed with Autism . My tasks at the school included building a summer reading program for some of the more advanced students. I directed the students during "signing times" videos (videos that teach the children sign language). I did teacher aide duties in the classrooms working extensively with the pre-schoolers, and in the occupational therapy room. In addition to this experience, I was also a camp counselor in high-school at Camp Howard outdoor school for 2 seasons.
I love to do activities with children. I am not the type of care provider who will sit children in front of the TV and do my own thing. Just to be clear, I rather children have no screen time during my time with them. I prefer for children to have fun. If the parent permits, I like to take them on outings to the park, or maybe a day to the zoo, children's museum, library, or swimming pool depending on the child's interest. I love doing art projects, or fun cooking activities, playing board games, and will even happily partake in dress up or tea parties. As well as making sure the children enjoy the time we spend together, I firmly believe in education. I like to come up with developmentally appropriate activities that stimulate the intellectual growth of each child. For school aged children I come in great handy for help with homework.
I am a student and am working towards a degree in early childhood education. I take courses through the local community college's online program, when I transfer next year I will continue primarily with online education. I am familiar with many learning/parenting styles includingMontessori, Waldorf, Attachment Parenting, and Positive Redirection. What I am unfamiliar with, I am willing to learn. My time spent with your children is based on your needs, their needs, and your parenting beliefs. I am very flexiable when it comes to this as I understand it is your child and I enjoy learning new styles.
I have a license, car insurance, and a car for transporting needs. In addition, I know basic Spanish, and am furthering my skills incase you are interested in your child learning a second language.
I would ideally like a position that offers at least a 1 year contract.
Best,
Jillian

N Portland Family Seeks Nanny for PT Work or Share
Hello! We are looking for a warmhearted nanny to help care for our 3-month son starting in January. Hours would be 8am-5pm; initially, we would need 2-3 days/week, moving up to 4 days/week in February and onwards.
We are looking for someone with experience - particularly caring for infants - who enjoys spending time outside, making art and music, and approaches childcare with humor and skill.
If this sounds like you, please share your resume, any references, and rates.
We've also had excellent experience with nanny shares in the past - our other son is 2.5 years - and would welcome contact from families in the neighborhood who employ nannies and are interested in sharing.
Looking forward to hearing from you!

Two families in inner SE Portland seek a nanny to share
December 04, 2012
We are the parents of two sweet and happy little girls – each will be 6 months old when you start. We are looking for someone who can help our babies grow and thrive in a happy, stable environment. Our girls are kind, loving, energetic, and affable children. Since we live in a great area of Portland, we hope our nanny will help us expose them to the many activities available in our neighborhood as well as in other areas of the city.
Our houses are located one block away from one another and we will be
switching childcare locations every other week. We will need care 3.5/4 days a
week (approximately 8am-5:30pm) and rather than looking to pay an hourly rate,
we are offering a flat weekly rate of $425 per week. We are also looking for a
one year commitment starting in early January 2013.
Responsibilities: Your primary and most important responsibility will be the safety and
well being of the children during the hours that we are away from home. During
the day, we’d like you to provide a variety of activities to develop the
children including reading to them, playing with them and their toys, arranging
some classes for them (when they get a bit older), etc. Our expectation is that
no television will be watched during the day. Weather permitting; we also would
like to see the children have the opportunity to get outside at least once per
day, unless of course they are sick. Possible
places to visit are nearby parks and the local library (as they get older and
can attend reading groups).
Qualifications: We are looking for someone who has at least 1-3 years experience working with infants aged 6 months+ and does not smoke. Some early childhood education is also preferred, but not necessary for the right fit. We are very much looking to find an enriching, long-term childcare experience for our daughters and welcome nannies looking help to contact us.
We look forward to hearing from you!
