Mount Tabor Cooperative Preschool (MTCP) has started accepting applications for the school year beginning September 2009 in both our Junior (3 year old) and Senior (4 year old) classes. We are happy to arrange a tour of our wonderful school upon request.

MTCP is a 59 year old developmental, play-based, cooperative preschool. Multnomah Playschool Open House!

Creative Children's Center in Beaverton

I just wanted to share some information about Creative Children's Center in Beaverton.  My son has been going there since he turned 2 and we love the school.  CCC is Oregon's largest parent-child cooperative preschool and Kindergarten.  They actually have programs from 14 months to 6 years of age.  I love being a part of my son's school experience and my husband actually parent helps once a month, so he gets to have his own special time with my son at school.  It's been fantastic seeing my son become an independent child.  He loves school and wants to go everyday!

They're holding an open house on Saturday, January 17th & Saturday, February 21st from 9:30am to 12:30pm.  There also visitation days available during the week on January 21, January 27, February 4, and February 10th.  Visitation hours are from 9:30 to 11:30am.

Hancock Street Preschool Call-In Registration is January 15

Mark your calendar - call-in registration for the 2009-2010 school year at Hancock Street Preschool is  Thursday, January 15, 2009 between 9:00am and 8:00pm. Please call Stacey Lehman @ 503-255-5727 on that date if you want to be included in the lottery.

We accept 18 children from the families who call on registration day, as well as children from alumni families. A lottery drawing is held to fill available spots. You must call on January 15 to be included in the lottery. Families will be notified the following week.

Your child must be 3-years old on or before September 1, 2009 to be eligible for the 2009-2010 school year. Financial assistance is available.

Hancock Street Preschool is a cooperative preschool for 3 and 4-year old children. Our 3-year old class meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30am – noon. Our 4-year old class meets on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:30am – noon.

In the spirit of a cooperative, parent participation is essential to maintain a quality program. Family participation is required in the following ways:

• Parent helping: Approximately   once every three weeks. 
• Serving on a Committee:   Approximately 2-3 hours per month.
• Fundraiser participation:   Annual poinsettia sale. Families sell enough plants to contribute approximately   $185 to the school or donate a larger amount.
• Mandatory Parent Meetings:   4 or 5 mandatory meetings per year.

Infant Montessori Co-op Interest & Help

Myself and a couple other mammas with infants (ages 8 months to 12 months) are interested in putting together a co-op Montessori close-in East side.  Does anyone have any experience with putting together a co-op or a resource for "how to's"?  Is there a good resource that you may know if for used Montessori materials, furniture, etc?

Hawthorne Family Play School was recently designated as eco-healthy by the Oregon Environmental Council! Looking for a couple 2 year olds for NE Nanny Share

Hi there, we are a group of NE families that have a nanny share/co-op thing going for our 2 year olds, we are looking for a couple more families that might be interested in joing our group on Thursday mornings. The group runs from 8:30am to 12:30pm and it's $20 a day.  With our wonderful Nanny, our goal is to create a fun group so our toddlers can interact with each other and learn through play .   This is also a great way for parents to get a much needed break and time to run errands without the little ones.  If this sounds like something you would be interested in please email. Portland Preschool Scene & NE Preschool Recommendations

Anjani is beging to think about starting her son in preschool, come fall and beyond.  What have other urbanMamas experienced in terms of "getting into" preschools?  Have you seen waiting lists reams long?  Has it been easy-peasy and openings abundant?  Finally, does anyone have experience with cooperative preschools in Northeast Portland?

I've really enjoyed staying home with my 2-year-old son but comments from friends already agonizing over the preschool decision made me realize that perhaps it's time to look into this! We just moved to Portland from a city where you often have to get on preschool waiting lists years in advance.  Is it the same in Portland? (And if so, have I already missed the boat, if he's likely to start preschool in fall 2008 (he'll be 3.5 then)?  Hope not!)  Coops seem like the most affordable way to "do" preschool, esp, as I'm not working right now and don't mind being involved; does anyone have any input on coop vs non-coop schools? Also, we live in NE PDX, near Hollywood/Grant Park and see that there are three coop preschools nearby.  Does anyone have experience with either Tillamook Preschool, Hancock Preschool or Lee Owen Stone Preschool?  Are there other ones you'd recommend?

SE / NE Toddler Exchange

Kelli is looking to swap some time with some local mamas.  She writes: 

My husband and are are looking for some sort of coop daycare/babysitting around or area.  I work full time and my husband goes to school a few days a week so we are going to need someone or someones to watch our little noodle while we are away.  I'm so scared of day cares with lots of kids.  Plus we strive for non-toxic and natural alternatives so having her go somewhere not like that is scary too.  My hope is to find a group of mama/papa who would like to trade watching the little ones when needed.  A few times a week for a few hours or so.  We are absolutely willing to volunteer our time watching your babies as well.  I would rather have an urban mama watch our little girl vs. enrolling her in a daycare. 
Does anyone have any ideas or know of any groups like this? 

NE Part-Time Infant Care

I live in NE,  learning/structure, loving and attentive, with safe outdoor play space environment, hoping for less than part-time of possible OR half days no more than two per week, daughter almost 11mo., norana@comcast.net.

Also,  I understand that places like this are hard to find with such limited hours needed (I'm a stay at home mama just needing a few hours a week), so I am also willing to look into co-ops, good reliable nannies, or babysitters.

At some point too, my daughter will be in preschool, so if there are recommendations for great ones in our area, please share those too!

Interest in Starting a NE Co-Op

Hi, my name is Bridget, I live in NE Portland (alameda area). I have a 16 month old daughter who has a fabulous Montessori teacher nanny at the moment, but I am looking for a group environment for her.  I have tried everything!  Everyone is either full (waitlisting for a year!) or only offer full-day care.  I only need 2-3 mornings a week, but would really like more of a “classroom” environment as opposed to just a babyswap. I am considering starting an infant/toddler cooperative with up to 8 kids, one teacher and one parent assistant. It keep costs down/

If you know of any centers/schools that offer very part time care, please let me know.  If you would like to nanny share 2-3 mornings a week for a while, let me know.  Our nanny is amazing! Or, if you might be interested in talking further about a toddler coop, let me know.
