Wild Lilac offers a progressive Waldorf and Reggio inspired ealry childhood program for children ages six weeks through 5 years old in SE Portland!

Outside of the classroom, we explore our neighborhood and
community through fieldtrips to gain a deeper understanding of the
ideas we explore inside our classrooms.
Our teachers hold the image of each child as capable, competent, and curious and strive to meet each individual children's interests and passions with learning opportunities that inspire. It is the teacher's role to observe the children, support their learning and to gently guide them to accept challenges and solve problems. Wild Lilac teachers document the children's experiences to make their learning visible to the whole community.
At Wild Lilac, we see ourselves as a community of child and adult learners and we provide regular opportunities for parent/guardian discussions and community events for children staff and families.Food is an important part of the culture of our school. What our families have to say about us:
"I'm writing this email to thank Brigit's teachers for being so sweet to her while she attended Grandma's place, particularly, Stephanie. She still talks about her everyday and says how much she loves her and frequently carries the card around that she made her. Today she yelled at her dad with the card in her hand "don't ever throw this away, it would make me cry, Stephanie is the best and she made this for me!" and I just about cried! I had a rough time in every childcare center my mom put me in growing up and to know Brigit was so happy when I was away from her makes me feel so good. We will be going to Europe for the summer! And before I started preparing for that, I wanted to be sure to thank you all. Thanks again to everyone for your kindness to my little one, she's had such good (and hilarious) things to say about her experience and grandma's place!"
"I am SO happy with the care and attention my child receives at your facility that I am willing to commute out of my way to get her there, even though there is a daycare across the street from our apartment. Keep up the spectacular work!"
"It's very close to my house, and when I came for a tour, I was pleased to hear about the educational focus--it's not just babysitting, but my child will learn all kinds of skills--social and academic. I also liked that the director was willing to spend so much time showing me around and answering my questions during my tour."
Looking for an affordable loving nanny?
May 07, 2012
Hello. I am a 25 year old mother, and part time student looking for a family in need of a part time nanny. My family and I just moved, so I lost my job as a nanny, where I was caring for another child along with my own, within my own home. Now I’m looking for a part time child to care for outside the home, where I can potentially bring my own 2 year old daughter with me.
I am highly qualified to be your nanny. Before having my own daughter, I was employed at CCLC “Children’s creative learning center”, as a full time toddler teacher. Before that, I was employed at A Childs Kingdom working mainly with toddlers, and infants. I have worked part time in a few other licensed child care centers, and I’ve been employed as a nanny for two different families. Over all, I have nine years working with children and I love doing it.
I contain an abundant of skills including empathy, energy, communication, listening, playfulness, creativity, organization, multi-tasking etc.
If I sound like I could be a good fit for your childcare needs, please feel free to email me at:
itskatelin@gmail.com
I look forward to hearing from you!

Hands On Art & Play Preschool
April 19, 2012
Hands On is currently enrolling for summer camps and fall 2012 preschool. Hands On Art & Play offers young children a place to explore arts, crafts and music in an environment that is exciting, safe and fun.
Each day children have many opportunities to create artwork. Art activities help children develop their creativity and sharpen fine motor skills. Children work independently on many projects, and also play and create with other children their age. The children enjoy learning together and forming friendships.

For many students, Hands on is their first school experience and first time away from home. The program's small size and nurturing staff help make that experience a happy one. Hands On encourages and supports children as they naturally strive to learn how to write, read, and count. Older children work longer on their projects and receive the individual attention they need. Our small classes allow teachers to help each child get ready for kindergarten.

Our preschool program is designed so children can experience preschool without having to attend every day or a minimum number of days each week. At Hands On your child may attend 1,2,3,4, or 5 days a week.
Hands On is also the location for other programs for preschool children. Even if your child doesn't attend our morning preschool he or she can join in the summer camps, Yoga, Spanish and Fiber Arts and other classes offered at Hands On!
Hands On Art & Play is located in St. David of Wales at 2800 Harrrison in SE Portland. We are not religiuosly affiliated with the church, but we love the sense of community that is building at Harrison Hill! Our preschool is one of the non-profit organizatons that shares space at Harrison Hill. You can find music classes for all ages, yoga for everyone and even an artist in residence. Need a tool? The SE tool library is also here!

I have been a swim instructor employed with Portland Parks and Recreation for 4 years and I have built a lot of experience through teaching with them. I am also a certified lifeguard with infant, child, and adult CPR and first aid training. For lessons I will figure out a pool plan with each family individually. I am also willing to babysit during the day or at night for kids over the age of 2. I have been babysitting since I was 14 and I have a lot of experience working with kids. I was a camp counselor last summer and I would be willing to take the kids to the zoo, or to the park to play games.
I am very flexible with hours and activities so you and I can talk about what you want your kids doing during the summer when they are under my care. I usually charge around 20 an hour for swim lessons plus any pool fees, and 12 dollars an hour for babysitting, this can all be negotiated between me and parents.

Licensed family child care in NW Portland taking kids 6 months - 12 yrs old
November 20, 2011
Portland Language Art (PLA) is a new child care facility in NW Portland. It is located off Cornel Rd and NW 102nd Ave, cross street from Cedar Mill Elementary School, just outside of Forest Heights. PLA owner/operator Lillian Sun just received her child care license and will open Jan 2, 2012 (can take child sooner if you need). Lillian is a loving and caring mom, who has two boys (4 and 6). More than three years ago, when Lillian was frustrated by finding her older son a good quality preschool, she started to have this idea of having her own child care/preschool. In past three years, Lillian has visited many preschool programs, attended early childhood workshops, and done research on preschool education. The result is Portland Language Art, a new child care/preschool facility that provides children an opportunity to pick up a foreign language while he/she plays in a clean, healthy, safe and purposely prepared environment that supports learning and creativity. PLA does plan to provide multiple foreign languages in future (which helps brain development and prepare child for global market). For the time being, since Lillian is native Mandarin speaker herself, she will provide Mandarin to children. In doing her research on preschool teaching methods, Lillian was highly influenced by Montessori and Reggio Emilia approach. Lillian has designed in her mind that her program will be a Montessori based but Reggio inspired preschool program --- mixed age group, each child has own curriculum that allows child progress at own pace, but will utilized more visual arts and music which helps creativity.

Looking for "school" for 2 year old
September 28, 2011
My daughter just turned 2 and has become obsessed with the idea of going to school. We weren't planning on sending her to preschool until next year, but she's asking again and again and anytime we're out and see a preschool she tries to follow them back to school.
I work from home and am able to watch her full time, so am not looking for traditional daycare--nor do I have the budget for that. I'd love someplace she can go for 2 days or so for half days, so she can have the structure of a school-type situation and meet other kids. I have scoured the web looking for co-ops and other options and haven't really come up with much. Most places take only 3 year olds (and up) or are full day daycare situations.
Any advice, ideas or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Please feel free to message me at nicmmiller at gmail dot com.

Nuts About Nature Classes for Fall 2011 (Ages 3-8)
September 14, 2011
The squirrels are nervous about our appearance - chattering angrily at us! Armed with magnifying lenses and bug boxes and spoons, we hunt and explore for whatever is lurking under rotting logs, in the bark of trees, or near the water's edge. We hike and sing and hear stories about nature, but we also create our own stories as we go - pretending to be hungry hawks chasing songbirds or coyotes on the prowl for lunch. We do not shy away from the rain, but rejoice in it with puddle stomping and soup making. We are young and energetic and curious - we are Nuts About Nature!!! Does your child want to join us?
There's still space in our SE Portland Nuts About Nature fall classes!!! For eager & curious 3-4 yr olds (Mondays or Thursdays) and 3-5 yr olds (Fridays), we offer "Lil' Nature Kids" - a small group class that includes exploration, songs, stories, and nature play. For children a bit older (4-5 yr olds) we have "Nature Preschool" (Tuesday mornings or afternoons). Nature Preschool combines developmentally appropriate preschool skills and activities with a weekly nature theme. Children learn ecological topics using hands-on activities, art, music, exploration and play. For children already in elementary school, we have "Nature's Playground" - a class for 6-7 yr olds that focuses on the needs and interests of older kids, primarily stealth games, exploration, theater, art and nature play.

Located in North Portland off of MLK & Rosa Parks, Growing Seeds offers a Reggio based preschool program that focuses on child-lead, inquiry-based learning. Children are encouraged to bake, garden, explore movement and music, and investigate the world around them. Our lessons are based off of their questions, as we seek to stimulate their natural inclination to learn.
Children are joyous, curious, full of wonder, experimenters, and explorers, and we want them to stay that way. We aim to keep this way of being at the core of the work that we do at Growing Seeds.
We are currently enrolling preschool-aged children in our program for fall 2011. Our school offers full-day care 2, 3, 4, or 5 days a week. Childswork Learning Center has a few openings left for summer camps and Fall classes
July 17, 2011
www.childswork.org

Childswork Learning Center is a non-profit early childhood education school located in Southeast Portland, Oregon. Since 1984, our school has served a diverse population of children and families, focusing on the development of the whole child with respect and compassion.
Childswork is a safe place for children to explore, take chances, make messes and learn through play. At Childswork we nurture wonder, we embrace joy, and we foster discovery.
Mission Statement:
Childswork Learning Center is a community dedicated to excellence in developmentally appropriate early childhood education, where each child and family is respected in an environment that supports lifelong learners.
Our Philosophy:
Play is a child’s work. Play is a child’s response to life. It is the way children discover themselves and the world around them.
Our Core Values:
- We appreciate childhood as a unique and valuable stage of human development.
- We believe in aligning curriculum and practices with current child development research.
- We value and support the bond between the child and family.
- We recognize that children are best understood and supported in the context of family, culture, community and society.
- We respect the dignity, worth and uniqueness of every individual.
- We embrace diversity in children, families and colleagues.
- We believe that children and adults achieve their full potential in the context of relationships that are based on trust and respect.
- We recognize all members of the community as lifelong learners.
- We engage in direct dialogue and problem solving in our community.
Our curriculum is a natural extension of our community’s view of children. We view children as unique and competent learners, capable of investigation and problem solving. As such, we provide a play-based, developmentally appropriate environment in which we build an emergent and constructivist curriculum with our students.
In an emergent curriculum, investigation topics “emerge” from our students. We observe children in order to identify interests and select topics as a class. In supported small and large group settings, we explore concepts in a hands-on manner. Our investigations are shaped by the students’ decision making; children truly learn how to learn.
Our teachers use their strong knowledge of child development to support children’s learning and play. Teachers observe and structure the environment to encourage wonder, discovery and meaningful learning.
Childswork’s curriculum was also founded on the inspirational work of Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotsky and Reggio Emilia. Their influence is still alive and well in our classrooms today.
Childswork adheres to the Oregon Early Childhood Foundations (PDF), which are woven into our curriculum.
Parent-Child Twos Class
The Parent-Child Twos class is a gentle introduction to the routines of preschool with the reassurance of a parent close by. The two-hour class is structured to include playtime with parents and other children, snack time, story time, choice time and circle time. During part of the class parents gather in one area of the room to discuss parenting issues and challenges with a positive support group. Each class will have a Parent Coach to lead discussions with the adults and a Toddler Teacher to work with the children. There will be a maximum of 10 children/parents in the class. To register, please fill out the Parent-Child Registration form.
2.7 - 3 Year Old Classes (children who turn 3 by December 31st)
What a wonderful beginning to your child’s preschool experience! This class for our young learners has a ratio of 6:1 with two teachers. Our play-based philosophy is balanced with introducing children to some of the routines of a typical school day with circle time, choice time, snack time and outdoor time. This class supports the transition from parallel to beginning cooperative play. Self-help skills are taught as the children learn how to become more independent. This class is available MWF or TTH.
3 Year Old Classes
Our three year old class provides a fabulous opportunity for children to explore, investigate and create. The world is a big adventure at this age. Our teachers follow their student’s lead in developing a curriculum that embraces their needs and interests. This class also guides children with their social-emotional development and helps lay a foundation for success. This class has a ratio of 8:1 with two teachers. This class is available MWF or TTH
4-5 Year Old Classes
In this age group there is a greater ability for children to work together, to create a community and to cooperate. These skills are incorporated into our emergent curriculum as we work on projects together that meet their interests. At this age literacy and numeracy are also woven into the play-based curriculum as a means, not an ends to achieving their goals. Social-emotional development and conflict resolution skills are essential at this stage, especially as children are developing new skills for group interaction. This class has a ratio of 9:1 with two teachers. Classes are offered three, four or five days a week.
Mixed-age class
Mixed-age interaction among young children can offer a variety of developmental benefits to all participants. Blended-age groups can have unique benefits, facilitating and enriching children's development. Just as with our other groups, our emergent curriculum guides our daily exploration. Our mixed age classes are offered two, three, four and five days a week with a ratio of 8:1 or 9:1, depending on the mix of students, and two teachers.
